I got a patch recently with a velcro backing and it was only stuck on with some very basic stitching around its edges.
Used a little knife to cut the first stitch then ripped it off with my hands.
That doesn't mean that yours will also be sewn on, but if it is you can do what I did.

This one came with a velcro backing but with a lot of hot water and a little Goo-Gone, I was able to remove that and sew it on. It's above the left breast pocket of a green M-65
