Fashion rules are there to try and hold shit together. Look at security guards in suits. Suits are formal and authoritative = guards should be these things = guards should wear suits. But they always look like trash.

We just have these books and GQ style tips because most people would be completely lost without them.

But if you understand the intent behind the rules, you're free to interpret them as you want.

the reason black and brown are not supposed to be worn together is because blue complements brown better. This is helpful for people who cannot dress themselves at all and wear a black suit with brown dress shoes when a blue suit looks better.
