Not knowing how fading works, I washed my raw Levi 501's twice now in the washing machine. I used hot temperatures and low heat dry. Did I ruin the chance of my jeans fading?

Wear them more, wash them less.
Good thing they're only Levi's 501s. You fucked them up real bad. At most you'll get light fades, but they'll be low contrast and look like shit.
so how does fading occur? is it just from wear or only from washing them? Havent washed any of my jeans in months cause of this
absolutely not, denim will fade no matter what. washing fades the entire pair of jeans somewhat consistently everytime, so the more you wash them, the lower the contrast of your actual fades will be. there is nothing wrong with this.

Those siqq faedz you see are from wear rubbing the dye off. Jeans that aren't owned by a denimhead will fade more evenly since they wash them more regularly, with slightly lighter spots in high wear areas like the knees, crotch, and the back pocket if the person keeps their wallet back there.

Aren't you never supposed to put your jeans in the dryer? I've always heard that ruins them.

No it just won't be as fast and the change will be more gradual
