Grunge attracted the sjws of the early 90s, feminists, nihilistic sensitive loser guys that "understood women" and did heroin to "numb their pain". See Kurt Cobain in interviews and how he was with courtney love. He was basically the prototypical nu-male who wore dresses as statement.

Grunge crossed with the whole 3rd wave feminism and Riot Grrrrl thing too. It was primed to be a tumblr girl trend.
