Let it grow out, but do your research on how to properly take care of curly hair.

You probably don't realize it's as curly as it actually is, I went through the same thing and we seem to have similarity hair texture. Don't comb it with anything other than your fingers, stop washing it as frequently if not entirely, look for some good curly hair aimed conditioners, and always let it air dry for as much as possible after showering, rather than using a normal, non-microfiber towel.

As far as actual haircuts, you have to wait to see how exactly it looks after bringing out the curls to see what works, but kn the meantime, you can't go wrong with longer on top and shorter sides. but yeah, it's really just a matter of experimenting and seeing what works for you, but it's worth it. I love my hair now.

yes, definitely stop using a brush, that is one of the biggest mistakes people with curlier hair can do. All it does is cause frizz and break up curls that may have otherwised formed. Just use your fingers to get it in the place you want, and really it's best to not even touch it at all after showering/conditioning, unless of course you're using product of some sort.

what about the problem where the back of my hair is really thick too? when i run my hands through my hair is almost looks like a mushroom cloud on top with i guess is whats supposed to happen but then the back will stick out all weird
