Do you wear watches for the look of them or do you actually have a practical use for them. I want to get one to cover an ugly discoloration I have above my left hand but it seems pointless since I use my phone to check the time.

I also have no idea what to look into and would want just one I wore everyday.

I used to be a chronic phone-checker too, for the time. Started wearing a watch, and I became accustomed to it, checking my phone less. One day, the battery died while I was at work. Made me realize how often I did look at my watch; every five minutes I'd forget my watch was stopped, and then I'd look. You'll get used to it.

As for an everyday watch, look at a Timex Weekender or Expedition. You'll be able to hear it ticking from a mile away, but you can easily get a fashionable-enough one for cheap.

I have deep scars on my wrist, so i always wear a watch. I have an ugly casio that is super useful and helps me out a ton in the gym, and a vintage watch that runs slow but looks nice, so honestly just go for whatever you like the look of the most.

I personally don't like vintage russian watches unless there's something interesting about them, like the Copernic, they just look old and worn. If you want military, look at field watches like the SNK809 or the timex Expedition Scout. If you still want to buy pyccкий, look at Vostok Amphibians on ebay. I personally like the ones with the blue dial and the diver, some have subs on them too.
>>
>>11958844
>>11959124
I think Vostoks are cool, but I'm biased as I recently bought pic related and can't be happier, when I don't think about the fact that I can't track down a metal bracelet that matches the bead blasted finish of the case and doesn't cost more than the watch

Whats the problem with them? Mine needed a new battery after 4 years and a new strap roughly every second to third year which seems reasonable to me.
>>
Guys, I'm confused as hell about Seiko.
Just by typing "Seiko" into google, the first two results are "seikousa" and "seikowatches"
They have the same "collections", but not the same models. And typing model numbers from one site into the other yields nothing. Seiko USA is way more expensive than Seiko Watches. What the hell is going on?

And then neither of these sites have the around 50 dollar seiko 5 you find on amazon.

if you shake a Seiko automatic and hear a little rattle, is something broken?

also is this chronograph effay (pic related)? should I wait for a potential panda version, or is reverse panda more attractive?

(I don't care how you feel about homages, we're talking 1k vs 50k here)
>>
>>11961677
I wish I could help with all of your questions (Seiko vs Seiko USA). I know that Seikos are generally cheaper on amazon and other places, because you're not buying from AD (and thus not getting the factory warranty). I've heard awesome things about 'insuron', one of amazon's warranty programs...
>>
>>11963004
that means its aggravated and might bite you. i suggest backing away slowly
>>
>>11963059
quite so, a tyrannosaurus perhaps... I don't know if all of my seikos are fucked, or if it's normal that there's a little rattle when you shake them
>>
>>11963064
Because it's an automatic, it has a weight back there that moves around to wind the watch up. When I move mine around, The rattle sounds like gears moving (Which is exactly what is happening)
So, no, unless it really sounds off, it's just the normal function of the watch.
>>
>>11963637

>According to secret documents issued to interrogators at Guantánamo Bay, obtained[5] and released by The Guardian, "the Casio F-91W digital watch was declared to be 'the sign of al-Qaeda' and a contributing factor to continued detention of prisoners by the analysts stationed at Guantánamo Bay. Briefing documents used to train staff in assessing the threat level of new detainees advise that possession of the F91W – available online for as little as £4 – suggests the wearer has been trained in bomb making by al-Qaeda in Afghanistan."[6]

Hey, /fa/. I read the sticky, but I don't quite understand watches enough to make a good choice here. I'm trying to cop something cheap and basic to go with my normal winter outfit of jeans+pullover. I was kinda thinking about some sort of Casio, maybe the F-91W or one of the colorful resin ones, but I'm not sure if that's too "lmao xD nerdy" for everyday use. On the other hand, I don't want to be the tool who decided to wear a chink POS dress watch with his tee and jeans. As far as the other main types of watches, I don't really understand what's appropriate for a 20 year old in casual clothing.

Help me, /fa/! Something in the <50 dollary doo range and some general watch info would be awesome.

It's casual enough for a t and jeans but still looks nicer than a cheap mall watch. Also subtle and not at all gaudy like some mall watches.

Beyond that it's durable. Wore mine through a plane crash and not a scratch on it.

As for appropriate this will handle casual and semi formal events but obviously a BT styling will need something else.

Water resist is a nice feature too.

Don't go into vintage unless you are knowledgeable. Do lots and lots of research before buying vintage.
Don't worry about it having the ETA, I honestly think that in the long run you'll be glad you did. More spare parts that are easier to access and more watchmakers that know how to service or repair it. Also, now that they have their inhouse movement the ETA one will become much more rare eventually. I got the BB36 and it's great.

But it looks like a cheap thing if we are talking horologically. First guy that wants to buy it from you for more than 200 bucks, sell it to him and buy a nice Hamilton Khaki Field. It will probably last longer and there's a big chance you'll still like it in five years.

Used to have one. Great looking watch, literally best bang for your buck at this price.

Now here's the downside: there's far too many colors, it can only be worn on a steel bracelet (which is rare as fuck) or a leather strap, and if you're not into either then you're FUCKED, it looks out of place no matter what you wear, it's a nightmare to find something that even remotely fits with it, and it's so beautiful and rich that it grabs everyone's look away from anything else you can be wearing.

Eventually sold it and got a more versatile monochrome SKX007 with a custom smooth bezel, which I can wear with any strap I fancy.

That's where you're fooling yourself: you won't find anything that's actually GOOD quality at an affordable price, and even less with this kind of design. The top quality you can get is chink shit.

Watchmakers that make GOOD quality watch don't make watches with such shitty designs. That's why people that want a good watch usually pick a maker and then scour their catalog.

I only got two watches (a Steinhart OO and an Omega PO). My wife on the other hand has several, made by brands like Fossil, MK, Skagen, Tissot...
Go for Tissot if you want more substance... but cheaper ones like Skagen are also perfectly fine (those got slim cases, an elegant design and Miyota internals).
Girls watches follow different rules, as the buyers wont care about male centered arguments like horology, history and movements.
Therefore most of female watches include Quartz movements (the crown is a bother with nails, they also tend to change watches more often to fit different dresses), and while those do their job, they will never retain good value. So just pick a nice looking one that fits her without too much concern. I am pretty sure she will be more happy with a watch that fits her needs and taste, than one with a big brand on the dial.
Just my two cents on that.

I found what made me not want to rotate is I got sick of having to set the time and day/date all the time. I'm never going to buy those stands that mimics wrist movement to keep automatics running, so my new rule for buying watches is: no date unless it's a quartz. We'll see how long that lasts though.

You don't know suffering until it's the 14th of the month and you want to wear this watch but the date is set to the 15th. No quickset date, tiny uncomfortable hidden crown, say goodbye to your fingernails.

I usually just don't bother setting the date. The other Omega is pretty bad too, the day of the week is quickset but the date is not.

sure looked nifty huh?
People are stupid faggots and always buy bullshit that's out of the way/questionable just to stand out.
My advice? Stick to what's known to work;
Citizen
Bulova
Seiko
Casio
Fossil

In all honesty that's a lazy and lame way to fullfill a hobby, or even more, a passion; disregarding if it's about watches or anything else.
Sure, you'll make less mistakes, granted, but you'll also never reach up to its higher potential, and that's just sad.

Now, I love and own several Citizen, Bulova and Seiko, but I could never stick to just those, even among only affordable brands.

You should be more risky.
We all should.

I love your Connie m8. Shame about the 3 o clock index, but still, quite beautiful.
Enjoy it very much.

speedy's from 1957 and 42mm. That's one long fad. FTR I'd prefer the reduced but chronos with features have always been pretty big

c'1960 Tudor Oyster (shock resistant), would /fa/ approve? I managed to fuck the crystal up when I was running to the Chinese take-out place while drunk one night.
>>

I wear one because I'm a high school teacher and I need to keep track of time constantly without checking my phone. If you need one then by all means buy a good one instead of some Casio r/anime digital shit, but you gotta be a huge fucking faggot to wear watches purely as a fashion accessory.

can't speak for the black PVD finish but i've got an 856 UTC and it's fantastic. worth every penny.

Noice.

>>11977832

Not my taste, but that dial looks great.
>>
>>11975424

I wouldn't do it. My friend bought one and in five years the coating will be worn off quite a bit.
Also held a Pelagos yesterday and was a bit disappointed to be honest.
Save up for a proper Submariner is my advice.

>>11979012

Nice one. Look for a crystal on ebay and have your watchmaker put it in.

I'm looking for a watch that I saw someone post in a /g/ thread a year or two ago.

It was an older watch with a fully luminous dial, and only a single hand. It had a similar aesthetic to >>11977460

I know it's a little late, but here's an actual suggestion instead of some more shit flinging. Pic related is Uniform Wares. Good quality, they're fucking gorgeous, and they also make 38mm models for people with small wrists. Not all that cheap though.

I'm new to watches so a late suggestion is still valuable. They're fucking gorgeous indeed, thank you anon.
