If you want recs, provide as many criteria as possible: including sex, price range, seasons/weather, occasions, other frags/notes/accords you like/dislike, special conditions i.e. can easily be found in mall department stores, other ephemera i.e. personal style/aura you want to project, etc...

Go to fragrantica website, they list the seasonality with each fragrance and a notes breakdown. You'll start to see pattern if you look at the scents you like/don't like. Heavier, ambers, musk, etc. = cooler weather, lighter marine and grassy scents = hot weather.

Thoughts on pic related? The only cool weather semi-tobacco fragrance I own is Versace Man, and I have been interested in this.

If I think Mugler Cologne is noticeably inferior to Creed Original Vetiver, will I be disappointed in Pure Havane? What would you recommend as a more deluxe choice? In before Tabarome.

Because many frags use one of several synthetic compounds (yes, even expensive frags), and there are several grades of natural oud. http://perfumeshrine.blogspot.com/2009/12/perfumery-material-oudaloeswoodagarwood.html

Have you smelled all the frags you mention? You seem to imply that Mugler is like a Creed knock off house, which is not the case. MC smells very little like OV and Tabarome Millesime is nothing like PH.

Anyway, if you've smelled any of the Mugler Pure line, you are 90% there, as they all share the same "DNA." I'd say it is closest to Pure Malt, just add a sweet cigar tobacco note.

>au de toilette Coco Mademoiselle was launched one year after the perfume and eau de parfum concentrations. Lighter and sweeter, it starts with cooling citrus freshness: the orange of Sicily and Calabrian bergamot united with aromatic note of Sicilian grapefruit. Sparkling litchi gives a beautiful fruity nuance and brightens the classical floral duo: rose and jasmine. The gentler notes of patchouli, vetiver, Bourbon vanilla and white musk are balanced In a new way and create a sweet and soft base. The fragrance was created by Jacques Polge in 2002.

i think perfumes directed at kids under 10 are tacky at best, weirdly predatory and shameless brand loyalty vehicles at worst.

kids aren't going to buy creed. parents with too much disposable income are going to buy it. and it's going to sit on the shelf, because the only perfume a kid will want at that age will have a singer/boyband/celeb/tvshow attached, no matter what it smells like.

What's a good size for EDT and EDP bottles respectively? I'm asking because I'm just getting into this and I'd like to start making purchases. I fear that I'll get bored or "outgrow" whatever I buy before the bottle is out.

Also, can anyone explain their appreciation for D&G The One for Men? I saw a few people in earlier threads praising it as a great fall/winter fragrance, and then I saw the internet's praise for it, so I thought it had to be this really incredible thing. To me it is fairly nice, but it doesn't captivate the season as much as I thought it would. And its projection/longevity is absolutely miserable. Is there anything similar that feels better suited to the weather and is stronger?

Dumb to buy something like this blind. Buy some CdG (and others similar in notes) samples at Perfumed Court or (I think) Lucky Scent and test them on your skin over several days. It pays off in even one bottle you like vs one you don't. CdG frags are all pretty different and distinctive.

I really want this to smell like Skittles or Froot Loops. See Demeter Fragrances for more crazy smelling stuff.
>>
>>11956765
They have five different fragrances and each one seems weirder than the previous one, honestly. Really evocative stuff.

Tonnerre I'd say is the most representative of their style, with the gunpowder and bloody deep aquatic notes that I've mentioned. I picture oldschool marine-themed woodcut art. Completely unwearable to me, but I admire the execution a lot.

Break Tonnerre in half and you get Vi et Armis and Fathom V - the first one is mostly black tea, birch tar, ash and has a more industrial feel, the second is damp soil, mud moss and reeds.

The one I do have and wear is Coeur de Noir, which is loaded with black ink, leather and pipe tobacco, with a dab of vanilla and sweet whiskey or cognac. TF Tobacco Vanille or Noir de Noir without the rose, that spent the last century at the bottom of the ocean.

Lignum Vitae also gets really sweet and weird, because it's mostly super black, three-day old tea and lemon sponge cake. That you eat with bare hands smeared with old industrial grease.

For me, it was just the cologne my father used. Never saw any reason to change it
>>
>>11957297
I have no idea why everyone worships Aventus- and it is worship at this point- to this extent. I'm no great nose, but ice my share of fragrances in a collection of niche and mass market throughout the years. Aventus is barely interesting enough for me to give it a second thought, it not for the insane hype surrounding it. A commonplace fresh cologne scent with a sweet pineapple note- nothing to justify the insane price. There are tons of far more interesting and high quality fragrances in both the niche and mass markets.

Thank your mom for saving her wallet and go look out for more interesting houses instead of being spoon-fed the hype.
>>
>>11957007
Coeur de Noir would be a safe bet, followed by Lignum Vitae and maaaaaaaybe Vi et Armis. All of their offerings have this cold and damp feel thanks to the birch tar and aquatic notes, and in those three the sweetness makes them really unisex to my nose. A female friend of mine likes all three a lot and her signature is CdG Zagorsk / Black if that gives you an idea.
>>
>>11957518
It probably is, if they all bother you. I find the effect quite stimulating.

But please go on and try Cuir de Russie. If asked to recommend a random fragrance to someone and I wanted to show elegance and mastery of ingredient blending, I would show them CdR. One of my all time favourite scents.
>>
>>11957903
Very cool, thanks. I think I'll pop for the sampler of testers from Perfumed Court then, much appreciated.
>>
>>11957892
What other men's fragrances offer that "commonplace fresh cologne scent" that forms the basis of Aventus in your mind? I'm curious because I hear the "Aventus is nothing special" complaint an awful lot, but none of the detractors name common alternatives. I'm really not a Creed fanboy, and Aventus isn't even in my personal top ten (or fifteen) fragrances, but I can still recognize that it is a special scent.
>>
>>11957297
I have both ck one and aventus and I honestly prefer ck one. In the summer heat, the creamy citrus is to die for. I picked up 200ml (7.2oz) of it for $25 so it works out cheaper if you buy two litres of the stuff than to buy one bottle of Aventus
Also, don't fucking complain like a little bitch if your mum didn't sell a kidney to get you a hyped up, and to be honest, mediocre fragrance at best. Be thankful that you got anything. If you want Aventus, buy it yourself

Is one million just a meme? I was thinking of getting one
>>
>>11958712
It's a very good (and complimented) scent when applied moderately, but it's really overplayed at this point, it's the first choice of almost like half of the 15 - 20 year olds that want to upgrade from Old Spice and then bath themselves in it, hence one of the two reasons it's regarded as a "meme", the other being the bottle design.

So it comes to whether smelling like everyone else bothers you or not. If not, go for the 1M Prive , it smells better and more mature in my opinion, though seeing how the 100ml testers go dry within days they are placed on the shelves, it will be overplayed as well.

I will check it out, thanks. I really don't want to give up on Chanel, but I have a similar relationship to Creed: one or two fragrances I kinda dig (Coromandel for the former, Royal Oud for the latter), the rest somewhere on a spectrum of "uh no" to "pleasant."

Consider revisiting these in a couple years. They are 5 star scents. Antaeus is a top ten for me easy. Sometimes frags take multiple wearings to "get."

I can detect a DNA in many Creeds, certainly in Montales, Amouage and the Mugler A*Men flankers, but I can't find a common denominator in most larger houses, including Chanel.

For me the running theme behind Chanel are the loads of aldehydes. In Guerlain, it's the Guerlainades and heaps of vanilla, while Serge Lutens have a very camphorous note to many of them.

Is Guerlain Homme L'eau Boisee discontinued?
>>
>>11961738
Tester is what you try when you go to a store, I guess the "for sale" is the one you buy in the packaging. Often times testers come in generic boxes and/or without the cap.
>>
>>11962418
Nope, still available and in production. Probably the best of the Guerlain Homme line.
>>
>>11962435
Im meant in scent strength, longetivity, overall performance. I sprayed some fragrances in the store and while they smelled nice they kinda vapored fast so im not sure is tester just trash or the parfume has low longetivity.
>>
>>11963455
That could be the case but it's somewhat unlikely. It's possible that sitting on the counter and shit, the light hits it frequently which can affect the performance.
>>
>>11963455
90% of the time the testers are the same thing as the boxed bottle. But sometimes it has been sitting on the store for a long, long time. The ones you get online usually aren't those on display at the stores, but I suppose it can happen depending on where you purchase it from. If you want to be safest, stay away from testers. I don't mind a tester if it's a good deal, but if the difference is 5-10 dollars, it's not worth it for me.

just got back from nordstrom's.

they're pretty chill in the women's frags section. just a big well-lit place with walls of product and a million testers and candles and things to check out. there's usually always a customer or two to attend to as well, so i've always been able to do my thing without much bother. they always offer to make samples, but i turn them down and try not to impose. this usually makes them relax and give me space, as i think they get a lot of people who abuse the hospitality. if i buy something, they're always pretty insistent and happy to hook up some samples anyway. got four this evening when i bought some christmas candles.

men's section: "so, whatcha like so far?" "have you tried this? it's an exclusive" "oh, have you smelled this? we just got it in, it's so clean and masculine. like when you smell it, you know a MAN's coming. i like my men smelling clean" as she brings over a strip sprayed with some new cartier joint and sauvage. haha like what the fuck. i'm sure this works on someone, but biiiiiitch do you see the 20 strips and 4 sprays on my arms i don't have time for this. i mean, they're nice, and they're doing their job, but

what i learned today: the bottle for tf's black orchid might be my favorite, beautiful and feels so nice in the hand. i couldn't even bring myself to smell the muglers because they look so teenage bedroom.

The Nordstrom flagship on Michigan Avenue here in Chicago had a pretty damn good fragrance section last time I went. Staff is chill and helpful while not being overbearing, good selection, and they even had little atomizers you could fill up and take home to really get an idea of how the fragrance dries out.

Meanwhile the Bloomingdale's feels like the valley of judgement for whatever reason.

>>
>>11973950
>blind buying designer frags you can easily find
why

Let me tell you something about "year round" frags: they don't work year round.
Don't ask for a clean, fresh smell for wearing all the time: there isn't one, because smelling like a walking lemonade on a fall night at an office meeting is retarded.
You say you have three frags, all of them are a variation of "generic clean fresh" and you want yet another variation of "generic clean fresh"? You can just say you're wearing Sauvage, Individuel or Invictus Aqua and no one will notice the difference, anon.
Get your shit together and come up for us with more focused ephemera; no one will suggest anything cause there's literally hundreds of options for you at this point.

>You say you have three frags, all of them are a variation of "generic clean fresh" and you want yet another variation of "generic clean fresh"?

I wouldn't say those three are that similar. I would say AHS is more citrusy and aquatic than the other two, which seem to be more suited to night time or indoor use. I'm looking for something like AHS but lighter to wear to the gym and while outdoors.
>>

>I'm looking for something like AHS but lighter to wear to the gym and while outdoors.

>>
>go to local Macy's to sample Egoiste (not Platinum) and Antaeus, maybe Pour Monsieur
>they don't have anything but Bleu de Chanel and Allure

But Nordstrom's definitely has regular Egoiste and Antaeus, r-right?
>>
>>11976816
That's my point. They're variations on "fresh and clean". You already have three "fresh and clean" frags. Why add a fourth?
I don't think anyone should wear frags at the gym, but a lighter AHS could be Versace Man Eau Fraiche, or VPH which you already mentioned, but VPH has the cleaniness of Azzaro and MEF has the citric of AHS. Seeing how you also have a Diesel frag with citrics and lavender, you are really running out of options of clean, fresh fragrances that are for outdoors and "gym".
Why not try, say, Mugler Cologne? It is clean and soapy, maybe that will interest you.
Or go all out on the generic fresh and get Nautica Voyage. Or you could get some thing in the Bvlgari Aqva line. Or D&G Light Blue. Or Aqua di Gio EDT, because why not, it's clean and fresh and you can wear it outside.
Hundreds of options on generic fresh and clean, anon. Don't tell me you can't find all of this online and decide on your own, because fresh and clean is literally the most popular pleb shit.

I have a bunch more: Laura Biaggioti Roma Uomo, True Religion edt, original Chrome, Acqua di Gio, and I have VMEF already. I just listed out those three because they're my favorites among the ones I already have. Perhaps I could do with a new fall/winter fragrance then. The problem with those is I really dislike all of the popular ones I've tried (Burberry London, A*men, Le Male, 1 Million, a few more I can't remember.)
>>
>>11978868
Maybe you dislike their take on the sweeter notes. I dislike Le Male for the lavender drydown on my skin, 1 Million for the bubblegum sweetness, but can appreciate London's lavender and A*Men's stinky caramel sweetness (even if I don't own the latter since it's not my stuff)
Have you tried Dior Homme? Encre Noire? Bvlgari Black, and Man In Black? Armani Code EDP? Maybe Armani Eau de Nuit? You probably tried D&G The One, both EDP and EDT, yes? Just get your ass to a store, look up the 10 beginner frags guide on BN, look at some Jeremy designer frag videos and go from there. Then we can help out and give our opinions but not until you bring ephemera and/or notes you dislike/like.

Recommendations for a good neroli scent? Would prefer not to spend too much, and I find the opening of Neroli Portofino a bit too harsh for my liking. Not fussed about whether it's feminine, masculine, or unisex at this point. Thanks :)

Colonia Essenza for example.

Bvlgari Aqva Amara. Lots of mandarin and neroli, slightly aquatic background, drydown has a nice floral vibe. Can be had for quite cheap online.

Bought Byredo's gypsy water. Damn nice scent but projects and lasts like water. I swear it's worse than D&G's the one EDT, even worse than La Nuit... Why are these feels real. It's so nice.

>having to resort to tricks to achieve acceptable performance from a fragrance
For me, longevity and projection are as important as the composition and artistry of the perfume itself. I am disappointed by anything that doesn't make it through a full work day without reapplying. I've been spoiled by houses that don't skimp on potency, like Mancera, Bond, and even Dior.

I love VPH. It's like cutting into a ripe orange on the beach, and it's my go to fragrance alongside Odeur 53.

Why Sauvage is supposedly a compliment getter? It projects like shit and smells like nothing in particular. Who made this meme up? Jeremy Fagrance?
>>
>>11982979
I get noticed wearing Sauvage and its notes are identifiable to my nose. Have you never smelled ambroxan or a pepper accord in a fragrance before?
>>
>>11983081
What I mean is that it smells generic. On my skin the projection is shit, though, have to bury my nose where I sprayed. Don't get all the hype surrounding it and why it would be a crowd pleaser, cause it's nothing pleasant to me (really chemical smell, like a generic aftershave my father used to have; can't find the bergamot anywhere, all I smell is ambroxan with lavender with a shy spice in the drydown, but it's of the worst, synthetic kind of drydown I'm talking about)

I overthought it, honestly. No one would have known or cared.

Tobbacco Oud for me.

Intox by kilian. Was a nice film to look at. Decently suspenseful. Haven't spent much time thinking about it since seeing it, but felt a bit slight and anticlimactic at the end. Moonlight was the best film I saw this week.

Middle eastern man here, just going to give you all some recommendations since ya'll been contentiously helpful introducing me to western fragrance.

Most my recommendations are "crowd-pleasers", stuff that will never fail to get you compliments and generally leave a great impression on people if applied properly.

starting with Arabian Nights by Arabian Oud, heavily seductive wood notes with citrus and green apple and amber aswad. This made to be unisex but I'd recommend it for men 25+ years old, it has sophistication but the green apple gives an energy and a wild side to it. Best applied very lightly as it has an absolute beast of a silage and longevity, if you over do it you'll legitimately give yourself a migraine.
>>
what are your thoughts on Drakkar Noir, de Guy Laroche? + 50mL ( 19€ ) VS 100mL ( 30€ ) ? ( i got à discount ayy )
>>
>>11989432
now let's go with something I believe will be completely exotic to your noses, a definite head turner. This is a Oud blend, it's not really Arabian Oud's original recipe but they make it the best in my opinion, Abdul-samad Al Q makes a mean Sultan blend as well.

The main note here is so well balanced and blended that you can't even dissect the notes but its agarwood, spices, and the ever so magical olibanum. Do yourself a fucking favour and get your hands on one, it's an ancient recipe that Egyptians and Yemeni's have been fighting over its origin for years.

Anyone who whiffs this once will have it engraved in their memory till the rest of their days.

Can you recommend some non-oud-based stuff that's accessible to noobs?

a very accessible yet really respectable oriental arabic frag is Arabian Knight by Arabian Oud, it's not oud at all but this lovely complex amber citrus vanilla notes that really carry that Middle Eastern Heritage of perfumery DNA of manly sweet scent, I think it's pretty accessible to purchase as well.

A tip tho this, like most other arab fragrances, shines in the cool down. Nothing more than 4 sprays will last you more than a day, it's one of those it smells like I literally just sprayed it longevity and silage.

The ladies fucking love that one.

Hi Fragrance General. I need some recs.

Going to give as much info as I can.

>Male
>20
>White
>6'2
>In shape
>Pretty attractive in my opinion. Do well with girls.
>price range is anything below 175$
>For winter (or 4 seasons if that's possible), although seasons don't really matter tbqh. I live in Canada so we get a bit of every type of weather here.
>I need something that smells nice for when I go out with friends at clubs or bars.
>I have no experience with fragrances so I couldn't tell you what I really like or dislike. The only one I own is Polo Blue Ralph Lauren and I like the smell of that.
>I want something that gives off confidence, something that girls will like. But I don't want it to be overpowering or smell too strong. Something effective but on the more discrete side of things if that makes any sense.

Thanks.

Also I guess I could add to this on how I dress :¸

Usually very neutral colors (Black, gray or white)
My go to fit is a black sweater over a white shirt, black pants and white/black shoes.
In the summer I usually just wear black jeans with a white t shirt tucked in.

the current 'lady killer' meme fragrance is dior sauvage. guaranteed compliments but a lot of guys themselves say it smells synthetic and or generic.
If you're looking for something that girls will still like but a bit different then you could go with valentino uomo intense. An inbetween could be dolce and gabanna the one EDP

The vintage is an oakmoss bomb reference scent. Fantastic value. Can't comment on the current formulation.

Sephora has a surprisingly decent amount of designer fragrances for men. The selection is fine if your boyfriend is new to the fragrance game. Just start sampling in-store to get an idea of what you would like on him.
