Looking for some nice pants, that aren't jean-like, that fit a more outdoorsy aesthetic (levi sherpa jacket, fisherman sweaters, boots, etc.) , but not too over the top with utility.

I have some nicer Kuhl and REI pants that I actually hike in, but I'm looking for something a bit more toned down (less obvious pockets and not extremely, slick waterproof texture)

fellow post-punk fag here, I also love Nick's aesthetic. I tend to go for lots of interesting patterned shirts, sharp boots, coated jackets and pants, basically anything that's slightly edgy and but somewhat muted. Get a denim vest and stick a bunch of obscure post-punk band patches on it. Wear parkas and leather jackets with slim ties. Try some bold abstract patterns on shirts and blazers and make that your focal point.

Dangly earrings, studded or patterned belts, interesting belt buckles. Don't go crazy on the distressing, but a few rips here and there in your jeans might be cool.

SLP meshes very well with this style imo, just take out the ironic bullshit. Look at as many band photos as possible, take their crazy on-stage fits and mute them into something more wearable for everyday.

I think the key is the tailoring, guys like Peter Murphy or Blixa Bargeld were skelly as fuck and dressed accordingly.

And yes, distinctive hair is important. I like it long and messy, adds a nice contrast to your otherwise sharp tailoring.

This probably didn't sound very coherent, but in essence I think you're trying to balance edgy punk shit with cleaner, well-tailored traditional menswear.

I have different hair so I cant give much solid advice, I'd play around with it and see if styling it differently would help, otherwise letting it move forwards a little or getting it shorter could be good. In about 75% of photos I see of people wearing the M65, the collar is popped or in this awkward in between position, pic related.

Off the top of my head: getting shirts "darted" (taken in around the chest), pants/shirts "hemmed" (shortened), "tapering" pant legs (i.e., shrinking the leg openings). Pants with smaller leg openings fit closer to the calves. Make sure the hem of your shirts don't end past your crotch or so - this can make your torso look long while your legs look like stubs, otherwise known as the "artificial manlet". (If you are short, all the more reason to make sure your shirts fit perfectly.)

You're going to want to tailor shirts (i.e., button-downs) mostly, because those are the key to the fit imo. Shoulders can't typically be altered easily so make sure that fits off the rack. For most shirts, make sure the sleeves aren't too long or short, but end a bit past your wrists. I actually recommend reddit for this one, I do think mfa has a guide about making sure shirts fit well, and could probably go into a lot more detail than I ever could.

Kind in mind though, that some tops look very good when they fit loosely. This can create a nice contrast to tight-fitting bottoms, for example. If you're not sure what I mean, look at any SLP or mid-2000s Dior show, and look at more band photography. But in general, for formal shirts that are to be tucked, you want those to fit slim.

If we're still talking about post-punk and punk shit in general, your pants are generally going to fit either slim or skinny. Google "slim" and "skinny" fits, and actually try on such pants in a store to understand what I mean. AVOID baggy and overly-long pants (pants that are too long will "stack" like an accordion, which actually can look very cool for skinny/slim denim, but awful on loose-fits generally).

There's not too much lingo involved if you can just describe to your tailor how you want stuff to fit. This will become more self-evident as you look at more runway images and band photos - you could even try showing that to a tailor if you're not sure how to describe things.

This is unrelated to your post, but I thought I might elaborate a bit more on the post-punk aesthetic. If there are any post-punk fags out there, I'd like to hear your thoughts, and maybe I could add more later as I keep thinking about it.

Stuff to avoid imo: most anything with streetwear connotations like hoodies, joggers, sweatpants, hightops or meme athletic sneakers, loose-fitting pants, snapbacks, plugs, bomber jackets (maybe? at least the olive green and black kind. some leathers might be good), bright flannels (some more low-key colors/patterns might be ok), athletic and sports-related wear in general. Highly meme'd brands like Supreme, Gosha, Vetements.

A word about avant-garde clothing: you could try to work in certain edgier brands like Julius, Rick Owens, Boris Bidjan Saberi, etc. There are lots of jeans with interesting washes and skinnier-fitting cargo pants that might work, for example. Some boots made by these brands call back to the early industrial scene. But KEEP THE SILHOUETTE TRADITIONAL, i.e. slim, and try to pair them up with a more traditional piece like a button down shirt. Remember that the reference point is traditional mens/work/militarywear. So avoid stuff like really long drapey tops, or drop-crotch pants, or giant bulbous shoes.

For graphic tees, keep them music related and focus more on vintage-looking concert and band tees. Monochromatic preferred. A little loose-fitting is fine. Also actually listen to and love the fucking bands you're wearing. Elaborate graphic designs and metal logos are a no-go.

I have a few questions, please help a poor 30+ fashionless man :

- I currently have a full beard but I'm bored seeing it on everyone and I'd like something more distinctive. Are there any sorts of facial hair acceptable nowadays? Like can anyone rock a goatee or something?

- Are there any dress-y shoes, like something to go with a suit for work, that are not leather or synthetic? What kind of model/fabric? I bought some synthetic leather shoes but it's way too sweaty in there.

there are really only three types of shoes, and you pretty much stated them all. Why is leather a problem?

Didn't work for me. Actually made the issues worse in two pairs of boots by increasing pressure on the inner archs.
