I think back in the day when people were poor as shit they tried to have one or two outfits that were as expensive as they could possibly afford.

So instead of polar fleece knock offs with little lint balls all over them and grotty trainers with popped toes: they were wearing polished shoes and suits.

Casual clothing was a mistake.

Basically, you can blow your money on expensive clothes if you know that you style wont change, have taste and only buy versatile pieces.

I dont make a lot as a long term student but my entire wardrobe is cat walk shit (Prada, Paul Smith, Marni). How do you manage? I have changed styles in like 6 years and doubt I will in the near future. That way your wardrobe only grows. You start with 4 pieces but with time you own more and more, until you arrive at 6 suits, 20 shirts, 5 more jackets, 2 coats etc. Best example are shoes. I basically own 3 pairs, 2 of which I've worn for 5ish years now. You simply resole them once every 1-2 years, take some care of them and are good to go.
