Columbia has plenty of excellent distance learning programs if you just want the name on paper. I'm considering doing one of their M.Eng. degrees in my free time or something like that.

Only go if you get a free ride or something very close to it. It's a low-tier law school that struggles in putting people in decent jobs.

With the right degree and the right institution, no-one is gonna give a crap.

I know a handful of guys who have done online engineering programs with great success. The only issue any of them have ever had was showing that they had adequate skill with real materials, which was easily met by showing projects they had made on their own (e.g. stupid Arduino shit). I suspect that might be a lot harder with certain STEM degrees (no idea how one could swing an online Chem degree, for example, given the lack of real lab time), but to my knowledge that issue hasn't really arisen yet. Remember, even MIT is doing courses - it's in vogue with real, solid places.

Of course, those guys I mentioned also had really, really good grades. If you're rolling out of Columbia with a 2.1 in the M.Eng program online, I suspect you'd have a lot of issues regardless if you touched the campus or not.

Go to a low tier state school, bust ass, and transfer up. Seriously, it'll get you where you want to go, assuming you have the balls to grind it out - plenty of my friends did that ,it was seriously admirable.
>>
>>10619859
(Not sure if that had anything to do with SFU but I'm assuming it didn't).

Dude transfer later or apply anyways. I'm starting pretty late (grad 2011) but seriously it's better to bite the bullet now than be hauling ass struggling for your family's meals at 40. Upgrade if you have to.

>Graduated from one of the T14s a few years ago. Now work as a lawyer. Kill me.

I'm only a sophomore and most of my knowledge of practice comes from people in our shitty campus pre-law organization, so I still have a lot of questions/doubts about going into law. If you have time beyond work and shitposting on an anime image board would you be willing to msg on skype or something? It'd be nice to talk to someone w experience (assuming you're corp law) that isn't feeding me shoeshined information

>>
>>10619907
I'm not him and I am not a lawyer myself, but based on what I've seen from being around a lot of law students and lawyers in different stages of their careers this pretty much sums it up for most of them:
>Now work as a lawyer. Kill me.
And also pre-law is the dumbest shit ever, it might even be worse than pre-med.

>>10619907
I unfortunately have to keep a low profile on here, but I can't tell you anything better than this thread - which is the exact stuff I read before going to law school and which is 100% accurate
:
http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3301274

The basic idea: law school is usually a bad idea. You can make it out well if you work your ass off and with a little luck.

The only thing I can add - don't listen to pre-law people. When I was in undergrad, the asshole advisor I had told me (1) that I wouldn't get out in 3 years with the two degrees I wanted, (2) I wouldn't get into a T14, and (3) even if all of that happened, I wouldn't make it into a law firm. Wrong on all counts.

>>10619933
Honestly you're the best tripfriend and I'm just a fat gook that has been jelqing for years
>>
>>10619924
Actually I should probably add that for the ones who don't work as lawyers now it's more like
>Now I have to pay loans that would only be manageable with a lawyer's salary. Kill me a thousand times.

But hey don't let some anonymous nerds on a cambodian fingerpainting chatroom ruin your dreams or anything like that. If you're honestly interested in becoming a lawyer and that's what you want to do then that already gives you a pretty big advantage over a lot of the salary-chasing morons in law school and it's still very possible to be a very successful lawyer if you sacrifice and work hard.

Wow. Before viewing that link I had no idea law school was so soul-destroying. Your job seems very colorless, Bateman. I've wanted to be a lawyer in the past, but after considering it for a while, I've been leaning towards entrepreneurship. However, I never wanted to admit that to myself because, in my local school culture, entrepreneurship carries a stigma -- it's like marking you an academic failure who was forced to make their own business. Now your source has persuaded me that law would probably not be fulfilling for me. I think that entrepreneurship would be what I would acclimate best to; I suck at mind-numbing work and I'm always tackling other things. Eventually, I even want to help mitigate scarcity of resources and improve living conditions for those without access to basic needs. It would be my dream to travel around the world and try to synthesize common sense methods with technology in order to create solutions for such problems.

Although it wasn't direct, thanks for your help anyway. -A

Majoring in fashion design. Imo that's the only major (besides maybe architecture) that's even worth majoring in here, since it's where all the funding goes and it's what the school is known for. Depending on which professors you get you might end up with an assload of homework, and lots of trust fund freshmen drop out because they come to art school thinking it'll be a breeze but then end up lagging behind on work/studying and their grades turn to shit. If you balance yourself out timewise and have an amazing work ethic you'll escape this hell hole with a great job since the school has amazing connections in the industry (a good amount of people end up working for alumni). Lots of people complain about no social life but that's their own fault for not getting their shit completed on time. Also some professors see the students as nothing more than walking bags of money and will either treat you like shit or put no effort into teaching the class. You've also got to have thick skin because WEEEEW LAD the professors will tear your self esteem down during critiques so many times you'll become a shell of a person.

Campus is nonexistent and half the time you can't tell if someone is a student or just a new yorker, but the new building is super cool, and food is pretty good. Overall a good school, perfect location for internships, opportunities for going abroad to Paris, lots of kids from Korea
>>
>>10620365
tl;dr go for fashion design if you want to be successful, the other majors are a joke

lol this is exactly the commentary I see whenever this school is mentioned. It really is a terribly organized, brutalist sack of shit. The classes are huge and people generally don't dress great. I feel like the U of C is the ultimate mediocre university.

I went here for one semester and got the fuck out. Pretty glad I left. Calgary is a pretty decent city though. If I had to stay in Calgary I would go to ACAD or even MRU. At least the girls are all decent and the campus is new.

As for transferring, I would say fuck BC and come to Montreal. Concordia is most /fa/ but you need to be in a small program for it to be worth your while.

I have political ambitions and law schools is going to be my best path to getting there. It was largely inspired by my family due to the fact that we have had trouble breaking into serious politics in the past from other branches of the family so my grandfather wanted me to dedicate to it.

Though it is a shit ton of work I really enjoy everything I have been exposed to thus far. It's just that socially I am non existent.

>>10624232
I have a kid like that in my AoSC class this term. He is one of those super spacey distant people who don't do very much. I'm continually blown away by some of the nonsense he says in class.

Your description is too fucking accurate. Atleast TFDL is nice. I was at MRU for a while and I honestly regret leaving. The only shitty thing about MRU is that the small class sizes allow retarded kids to talk in class discussion the entire time, wasting so much time.

I was thinking about Concordia honestly, I almost finished an application there too. The reason I'm leaning away from it is I'd need to find myself work outside of school, and I don't speak a word of french.

Fordham here (LC campus, don't go up to the Bronx for any fucking reason). You'll have all of those things here. Literally a 70/30 girl/guy ratio. NYU is always objectively better for whatever you want to go into no matter what, but Fordham is usually very generous with money if you show promise, and therefore will put you in much less debt. Reed is shit, Oberlin and Colby are good, but you'll probably be majoring in unemployment if you go there :/

Retake your fucking ACT or just bite the bullet and go for the SAT, you'll have a bad time if you go in the way you are now.

Very small. I've heard Rose Hill facilities are nice, and that's about as much as they have going for them.

There's a massive YMCA, New York Sports Club, and Equinox all within a few blocks of the campus, and most gyms give pretty good discounts to students. That's what most of my friends use.

Very chill. Lots of people like to go out and party on the weekends (and sometimes on the week days because there are so many bars and clubs close by), but it isn't insane, nor required in order to have friends. If you want to smoke, there are plenty of people that sell in Columbus Circle or literally any other area you can think of. Having classes be no more than a 5 minute walk through a building away is incredibly nice, and unless you're going into Biology/Chem or really want to take it, you'll never be forced into going up to Rose Hill to take a class. I'm enjoying it a lot so far.

>>
>>10626492

My tuition is actually around ~32,000 with the aid I received. I went to a well-known institution that Fordham is connected to (not the high school that shares their name) and got pretty good grades there, but I was by no means exceptional. They are very generous with the amount of aid they tend to give, especially if you're getting into "better" institutions (NYU) that aren't going to really give you a cent.
>>

Fellow York Fag here. Why is the Ross building so fucking ugly?
>>
>>10626541
What kind of grades did you get? Would you say that it's worth it being there?
>>
>>10626547

3.59 with 2090 SAT. The school I went to was a little crazy, so that 3.59 is weighed to be a little better than it actually is (we did "college level" material).

It's definitely worth being here, especially because of the cost. I'm going to either Law School or Med School after Fordham, so saving myself some $$ now and refraining from piling on debt is a v good thing. If you really want to "transfer up" after your first year, it shouldn't be very difficult, as it has a good name and a good reputation. The location is absolutely incredible. I would never trade living in NYC for anything else.

Maybe things are a bit different here, but I am at U of T for law atm and while there is a lot of work it is rewarding in its own right. >GW Law part-time with a FT paralegal job at a DC biglaw.
I'm so phenomenally sorry. You literally are positioned to be the bitch of every single lawyer at your firm, which isn't fair. Paralegals aren't treated right 95% of the time.

(That said, I don't trust 95% of paralegals to do reliable work, which is a different issue)

Also, fuck your basement classroom. I had my BARBRI classes there over the summer a few years ago, it was perpetually balls-ass cold.

>>10632482
I do work in D.C., and my firm is also cavalier about dress code. I always wear a suit, just never a tie. That's my concession, I suppose. I wouldn't ever hold myself out to be well-dressed, though - I need a LOT of improvement.

But yeah, the legal field in D.C. is poorly dressed across the board, even among the "good" firms. I know it's a bit unfair to impose a harsh dress code on people already working crazy hours, but the image has dropped precipitously. Those square toed shoes are everywhere and it's the most headache-inducing thing ever.

Australia has shitty research funding, but I'll continue to get a Masters and PhD in Pure Mathematics.

Most likely I'll go to the states, teach sum classes, supvervise masters/phd students, and publish papers. I'm actually content living my life that way eventhough the pay will shitty first.

Also it's going to be tough, because there's lots of high scoring students here, and I'm only an average student averaging 60% to 70% sometimes 80%+; which is utter pathetic for someone wanting to into a grad program.

A masters in pure maths can get you into finance, IT, and teaching with a certificate IV in education support.

I'm fat, my /fa/ness is non existent, and I'm trying to lose weight.

>>10633151
Yes, Unimelb is way better than Monash in terms of everything. I'm personally gonna do my masters and phd there.

Monash is okay and if you're good at socializing and your really good looking yourself; you're going to have a good time. Student life is pretty good here.

I know this is a weird question but, would it be soul destroying or extremely stupid to do law school just to be a law librarian? I saw a decent amount of jobs at law firms, companies and universities for them and about 60k a year. I think with income repayment after 10 years I get that law degree fully forgiven because its a librarian job.

I am a graduate of library science and work a kinda boring job as a library assistant.

In terms of everything other than fashion, just fine. If you're okay with seeing nothing but kids in sport shorts and boat shoes everyday then it's a great place to be.

Thinking of transferring out of here desu

The social scene is good if you're someone whose ideal night is to get drunk and go to concerts and possibly hook up. Otherwise you'll need effort to find your niche but it's possible. There aren't very many good, large venues for parties so expect to be cramped if you're looking to turn up. Make a good group of chill friends that you can stay in with and play cards and stuff. Academics-wise they're bretty good but that depends on your department. All of my profs are ivy league grads but some of them just aren't the best teachers. I'm a math major and the only reason I came here was because I wasn't accepted anywhere else, but I've made good friends and a lot of sentimental attachments to things here already which is the main thing keeping me from transferring.

I understand how you feel, but don't mock people in so-called prestigious universities just because you feel resentful of them

Many students who attend such places are in fact from the low or lower middle class. In fact, all the Ivies offer free tuition for students whose families make $60k a year or less
>>
>>10636350
same here
i really wish i tried in high school
i dont mean to /smartbutlazy/ meme but i got a 34 on my act with a 2.0 gpa, so i'm stuck going to a trash school

Fairfield University

Grand Valley State University

Sorry for the delay.

Honestly, my perception of it isn't bad, might be a good path to take. Law librarians are often asked to get really talented with finding data and knowing databases, but that's not hard information to learn, and it makes you invaluable to master. There are a LOT of aging lawyers who are still intimidated by shit like Lexis and WestLaw, which will keep you in business. On top of it all, for whatever reason, I've never seen law librarians really be pushed quite as hard as we push paralegals/secretaries - YMMV, of course.
