Once it's solid enough to scoop:
Take it out and just roll/smash it around. Smooth plywood and plaster are great surfaces to work it on. This will make it dry a lot faster.

In the meantime learn to knead the air bubbles out of the clay (called "wedging"), so that when you fire it, it doesn't explode. Once you have a nice wedged peice, then your choices are mostly:
Pinch
Coil
Slab
Throw on a wheel

I personally like slab pots. Remember to set your expectations too high.

Slab pots are pretty cools, I've made one in high school. But I going to try the coil pot since I am much more for familiar with it. Also, thanks for the tip on the air bubbles, definitely would not want that to happen. While the dirt is still splitting with the water, I'm going to go put some sticks in the kiln and prepare it ahead of time.

Can't wait to see this break from heating up/drying too fast. I've tried this twice already and both times the piece broke. I actually just began a third try. This time I wedged a bunch of grog (bisqued ceramic powder) into the clay to help stabilize it. I threw the piece on a wheel at my school and its funnily similar to the form OP's aiming for.

It smells like shit because it's got a lot of organic matter in it, including shit. It's from the backyard. It's probably composed of soil, sand, silt, and clay. There's obviously enough clay in there to shape something with it, but the sandy, wet gleam tells me it's not very plastic. Even so, carry on! Fun to watch. Not to derail the thread, but im making a flower pot out of wood, and my question is this: because i want to have this on a desk, what can i put on the inside edges so that it does not leak water? I do plan to stain it and put a coat of waterseal on it as well

Just use titebond 3 woodglue on the joints.
Its a flowerpot so it has to have a hole to allow drainage in the bottom anyways.
Soil takes the water it needs, and all the water it cant hold will fall to the bottom out of the drainage. No need for an airtight container on the sides.

If you dont add drainage the roots will rot and you will have a dead plant.

Looking good. I dug some clay up from my garden and still have to get round to making something from it.

Your clay still looks a little wet at this point, given the sheen on its surface. You may find it easier to work with when its a drier. It will hold its shape better. Also bare in mind that you can sculpt the clay after you have formed it into its initial shape. Helps to get rid of some of that lumpy coil look. Pic related is something i coil built then smoothed by hand.

Another piece of advice i would give to you is not to rush things. Working with clay takes a lot of patience and going too quickly usually ends in mistakes. I would really recommend doing a pottery ceramics course for anyone who want cultivate patience. You have to wait a while for things to dry enough for the initial firing, and then again for the glaze firing. However it is very rewarding once you make a finished piece. Working with clay itself is also very relaxing.

On a side note, i am also in middle of making a ceramic gondola figure. Will post it here once complete.

also when making your own clay from stuff dug up in the ground there are a couple of methods you can use to refine it further. Once you have the raw earth, leave it to dry out. Then crush it up into a powerder and sieve it through a series of increasingly fine screens. This removes the bits of stone and peices of decomposed organic matter in. Then mix it up with water and let that dry out. Any sand will have settled to the bottom. You can remove the top layers of clay and leave the sandy residue at the bottom. Its lengthy process but its easy to DIY.

I am curious why it's taking a while to form the pot. A small coil pot can be easily formed in about 20mins no problem.. Is it your inexperience, a problem with the clay, or are you just keeping us in suspense? We all watch this pot grow inch by inch, day by day, with hilarious attention to it.

This thing is going to crack apart from the extreme variances in clay moisture being joined together.

Your on the ball with the first two reason but not the third. I haven't made a clay pot in like 3 years so I am rusty but I am relearning as I go. The clay is fine, also almost all the sand has been remove, it just looks wet as shit. However, I am worries that the weight of the coil stack up on top each other would crush the bottom ones below, so I let each coil dry up first. I also have work in my photography, plus I cook for my family so I have to maintain that. I just literally woke up one night and was like "you know what, I'm gonna make a clay pot for the start of the summer.". Only realizing that I have none the equipment to do that so I as you can kinda see. I'm basically going extremely primitive, making pots that would likely be used 6,000 years back.

Cover it with a plastic bag for a day, then uncover it and let it dry slowly in a place without any drafts so it doesn't crack. I want it to be intact for the possible kiln explosion.

Besides the fact that you kiln brick looks like concrete–and hot concrete explodes easily–you're not going to get it hot enough without a chimney. You also need a firebox in front of the firing chamber. These two things will increase the heat and allow you not have to fire a pot directly on the fire. While you wait for the pot to dry you might as well start testing out the kiln. Use those little dry coil scraps as testers.

Seriously? Concrete's like a sponge. The best kiln explosions I've ever seen were when they were built on concrete slabs and fired after rain. They were elevated up off the slabs, too. I'm talkin 50 foot radius shrapnel. Fucking glorious.

I'm just trying to be reasonable. His kiln's not gonna get hot enough to explode spectacularly anyway without the firebox to feed the chamber, a thicker better insulated chamber, and a chimney to establish/damper heatflow and draft. He could do a big old open pit kiln with a bonfire built on top, but that's a really bad idea anywhere near your house and the pots have a 5% chance of survival. I'd totally be up for a video if he gets it figured out enough to be dangerous. I kind of want OP to succeed though.

Thank you all for the heads up, I was trying to find something in the house that I could use to make the chimney, but I find nothing at all, sad face. Also, holy shit, thats a very strong explosion. At this point, I feel like turning the kiln into a condense bonfire and chuck the pot directly in the a fire would be better. you full a bucket with dirt half way and full the rest with water, you add a bit of soap to help with the process and mix everything with your hand for 10mins. Let it settle for a day and then all the sand will stick to the bottom of the bucket and the mud of be a thick slime in the middle. At the point to separate it with the other bucket. Overall, this whole process got me about a gallon clay. Enough to make about 4 decent pots and a couple other bits. I have three more chances left lol.

Some tips for the next attempt, make sure that your pots are completely dry a little moisture on the inside will make steam and break it.

Hollow objects can be made with a ball of newspaper on the inside, it is less heavy that way, make sure to let it dry for over 2 weeks or it will break when fireing.

I never fired stuff in a fire like you did there but i think it may be a good idea to embed the clay in a bit of sand, that way it is not charred like it is now.
Also let the fire run long enough.

No, it's not an idiot question. The hours long process of bringing the thermal mass of a kiln and its contents up to temperature makes a bellows an unreasonable amount of work. There are two solutions: a forced air burner system or a tall chimney. Doing it on the cheap, or using solid fuel means you want to use a chimney. Once it starts to heat up the hot air rises up and sucks in all the oxygen you need from the firebox to burn hotter. A very simple mechanism to control the amount of oxygen (and the efficiency of the combustion) exists: a flue or damper. There are two primary controls for firing a kiln: the amount of fuel you throw in it and the flue. OP's first pot cracked at the beginning of the firing as the last little bit of moisture in the clay turned to steam and exploded out because it got too hot too fast in the direct flames. Generally, you want to warm raw pottery at about 200ºF for about an hour or two with a small amount of fuel and a wide open flue. Then you close it about halfway and start throwing wood and shit in there until it starts getting hot. This part goes fast. You fuck around with the controls until the kiln does what you want it to. Takes a few tries, but it's fun.

You're getting there, man. The most obvious answer for making a chimney is to use clay. If you take a cylindrical object about 5-6" in diameter, then tape a couple sheets of newspaper around it, you can roll out a slab of clay using your rolling pin and wrap it around the cylinder. I'd make them about 6" tall. Rotate the clay-wrapped cylidner with a cutting tool on the table to make the ends level, then slide them off the cylinder. Roll out another slab and attach the clay tube to it, cut out the excess clay disc from the inside and trim the outside edge to have a 1" flange on either end. Now you have stackable, flanged clay chimney pipe sections. You can build them up several feet as needed.

You also seem to have a couple piles of red clay bricks sitting next to the kiln. You might want to use those to make a little firebox antechamber in front of the kiln. Try to fill any gaps or holes in the kiln structure with clay.

This is a little bit better. It might work. This time collect all of your sticks and shit and have them arranged neatly in a pile. Be ready to stoke the fire through the front opening to feed it as necessary. Remove the top damper brick off the chimney as the fire starts going, then slide it back and forth until it appears to have the best draw later on. Keep the fire low and little for the first hour so the pots don't explode. If you make some clay rings and place them in there just past the fire in front of the pots, you can fish one out with a metal rod, tongs, or a poker every once in a while, quench it in a bucket to test whether or not the pots are hard. This is the ancient way of testing for doneness. Good luck!

Oh, and just for fun: There is an ancient tradition of lighting a couple candles inside the kiln at the base of the chimney and letting them burn overnight to warm the chimney and establish an upward draft by the rising heat. It makes lighting and keeping the main fire easier. Process is called candeling in potspeak. Even potters who preheat kilns with pilot burners and electric elements still generally call this slow initial warming candeling. Tradition.
