Is it safe to fertilize crops with human waste? Can I just empty all my pissbottles and shitjugs into my compost pile and let it rot, then use it next year?
>>
>>983659
I'm wondering this too but I think I would run out of space to dump my massive shits after a while.

Also would e. coli be present?
Why don't poo in loos do this?
There must be a reason for not taking advantage of this
>>
If it's composted well then it's fine
>>
>>983659
Yes, it werks. Its forbidden because of ancient hygenic rules.
>>
>>983659
oh please, human waste is feasible as fertilizer but a rule of thumb is too store urine atleast a year before using, some gardens in the states uses sewage waste materials after processing ofcourse as fertilizer for food even
>>
>>983659
urine can be used directly for a nitrogen boost. mix with water 1/10
shit has to be composted. there are many methods, but generally you have to add carbon to get a good C/N ratio. leaves, straw, wood chips, charcoal!...
also woodash for binding smell

google composting toilet

faster way is to include compost worms, for example Asa foetida
pharmaceuticals or other substances might be present if you use raw material from humans who consume them.
>>
>>983671
>Its forbidden because of ancient hygenic rules.
What? Where the fuck you live?
>>
>>983659
Definitely.
However make sure it's human waste only.
>>
>>983680
Israel.
>>
>>983680
>What? Where the fuck you live?
USA does not allow using human waste as fertilizer on industrial farms either; it's not an unusual rule.

Fun Fact: in the USA you generally do not need to connect to utility electrical power, nor do you need to connect to utility water supply--but you must use an approved method for human sewage disposal. That being, an inspected and approved cesspool or other composting toilet. You can't just shit in a hole in the ground.

also I thought that urine contained too much salt to use as any kind of fertilizer (I live in central USA tho, mebbe if you lived on the sea side plants might be more salt-tolerant...?)
>>
>>984080
>USA does not allow using human waste as fertilizer

Not true, I've seen fields in Vermont in person that have signs around them "WARNING HUMAN WASTE FERTILIZER IN USE (CROPS NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION)"

I found it interesting they felt the need to inform readers that the crops weren't going to end up on their plate. I bet if the sign didn't say that the farmer would get complaints. I'm pretty sure the stuff comes from sewage treatment plants so it's treated to some degree. But they still won't use it for human food, must be cattle feed crops.
>>
>>984084
Just realized the crops might get eaten by hobos or passerby's for some reason... better safe than sorry.
>>
>>983659
You should compost it first.
And if you are seriously ill or take medicaments, it's probably bad idea.

>>984080
I've read that thing about salt too, but I think it's not true. My dog pees and shits in one corner of the garner, and in that corner the grass is always the highest and most dense. I too sometimes pee in garden, but haven't noticed anything bad with grass.
>>
>>984080
http://www.vice.com/en_ca/video/you-dont-know-shit-full-185

At the end they find NYC's human waste is used as fertilizer.
>>
>>984138
I have an apple tree under which my dog always shits for some reason. It grows the biggest fucking apples ever.
>>
>>984162
That's defence mechanism.

The tree wants to kill your dog by dropping an apple on it's head.
>>
why does it matter where the manure comes from in the first place?
farmers spray their fields with cowshit all the time, but it's not like it's going to effect the apples you buy afterwards.
>>
>>983659
Traditionally night soil is composted for 2 years. Keeps the plague in check.

For better results use a two stage anaerobic aerobic system, dry the sludge, and compost that.

Untreated urine is fine in small amounts but fucking disgusting. In large amounts it will ruin your soil. There's nitrogen compounds in there, but bacteria that keep fixing atmospheric nitrogen continually are much better.
>>
Grow algae in cesspool full of your toilet waste.

compost the algae.
>>
A bunch of Philippians live in my area and make a killing at the farmers market. They shit and piss in buckets and use it for they're gardens. They are the are natural real deal farmers. Needless to say I lock up my cat and dogs inside at night
>>
Take it from a dude that went arm deep in a toilet drain to yank out a huge ball of roots that had begun to lift the toilet off the ground.. Trees love our shit
>>
>>984080
In the USA. it is great to be able to build your house down on a hill, with knowing the guy above you isn't physically having his shit and piss running down on you every time it fucking rains..

Legit, having proper sewage disposal for human civilization is 100% as important as having fresh water. without it, you would legit die.

think about new york.. if all those buildings just flooded the streets with shit and piss. people would start dying in within week...
>>
>>983659
Yes. You must compost it first. You use different methods for urine and for feces. The term you need to google is, "Humanure".

People who cite that there will be medicines in human waste need to remember how much medicine is pumped into animals at the drop of a hat.
>>

Christian here. Some of the Old Testament laws were based as fuck.

Human waste needs a longer decomposition time than animal waste because of safety.
>>
>>984357

Oh yea. I saw a photo of a literal field of human feces with the Taj Mahal right behind it.

It's like like all those photos showing Washington DC in a good light, but if you zoom out just a little you'll see impoverished ghettos and buildings falling apart.

I feel like it's kinda dishonest :/ no photographic ethics.
>>
>>984080
Only for human consumption, since human pathogens are present in human waste.
It's totally fine for animal feed crops.

Solid waste from waste treatment plants is actually quite valuable as fertilizer, since it contains tons of micronutrients.
>>
>>984138
I've always noticed that where my dog pisses always dies, but the area right next to the dead spot is the most green and lush area. Any ideas why the hell that would happen?
>>
>>984671
urea/nitrate concentration gradient would be toxic levels at piss site, dilute enough to be plant steroid farther off.
>>
Op, google Biogas Plant. Its a system that taoes waste water from toilets, human waste etc. Usues it to make biogas similar to propane that you can run your house, kitchen cars on. The Biogas Plant also has an outlet for the processed waste to be used as fertilizer.

Good question. I do know that biodeisel exhaust smells faintly like french fries.

nitrates and N20 aint gonna be affected at combustion engine temps mang. also propane is odourless, they add a special denaturing compound that burns so people can detect leaks more easily.

The gas from a Bio-methane digester smells like rotten eggs due to Hydrogen Sulfide. It is the same thing in Natural Gas. The difference is there is about 90%-95% Methane in Natural Gas with CO2 and Hydrogen Sulfide while Bio-methane is 70%-75% Methane with CO2 and Hydrogen Sulfide. Bio-methane is normally cleaned up to be closer to Natural Gas levels of Methane.

The end result is Methane that can be used for Heating & Cooking and High-nitrogen Fertilizer. The real work being done is by the Anaerobic Microbes. Because of what they do, you can actually get more out of it than work you put into it. Like planting a tree seed for getting fruit, you are hijacking a natural system to make things simpler and more cost effective.
>>
>>984804

Hydrogen Sulfide is like deadly nerve gas, is it really a good idea to be creating and using it?
>>
>>984830
Normal flammable gas safety procedures ensure your safety. The larger hazard is creating a highly flammable fuel source in the first place. Millions of people use and make bio-methane for use in their daily lives.

People who have died from this stuff who where it didn't explode had entered a digester large enough for a human to get into or were killed when it was made from accidental means. For instance, an entire family was killed (save the little daughter) when they entered their basement filled with rotten potatoes and were over come one by one as they tried to save each other. That event was unrelated to DIY production of bio-methane. The people who entered the bio-methane digesters went against all safety procedures. a mistake when ended their lives.

We have so many bioaccumulative poisons from decades of heavy and chemical industry, our feces is a great place for finding heavy metals, active pharmaceuticals, flame retardants and softeners, anything bad really.

And we boil it, call it safe, and put it on our "food".
Don't buy industrial groceries. That's not food. The organic stuff barely is.

Go to a farmer's market. Short transports, no packaging, and you can ask them what they use as fertilizer, for fattening, or as leaven.

Or better yet, make your own. /out/ will help you grow crops with fish poo and fungal spores. /ck/ will help you make perfect sourdough rye at home. All consumers are victims, nowadays. Have your doc send your blood to a lab for trace environmental poisons. Sure, a few hundred ppm of this carcinogen and that endocrinology hazard are normal. But so is indigestion, allergies, a poor sleep cycle, rage, and substance abuse. Also dying from stress and poor diet around 60.

I emptied an old piss bottle the other day. It smelled like old taco meat.

But when I opened it up before a few months ago it smelled worse, almost like a chemical smell, and it was fucking brown.

When I poured it it went back to a very light yellow color.

Just thought I'd share that.

that is only crops like biomass sorghum, corn or sugar cane.
>only 4% of corn grown in the USA is sweet corn

its not shit and piss though. it's partially treated sewerage. like instead of completely treating the sewerage to drinkable quality at great expense and pumping it back into the river for the farmer to just pump out, they just mostly treat the sewerage then pump it straight to the farmer.

You're full of shit lad.

Hydrogen sulphide is in gas at the well /Reservoir (called sour gas) but it absolutely does not end up coming out of your cooker.

They spend billions removing H2S because if they didn't, it'd corrode the shit out of every pipe it flowed through. And it's super poisonous and doesn't combust, so they don't want it in your house.
>>
>>983659

Depends.

Usually the answer is no. You dont want a loop of human waste to human food as disease infections parasites can ride on it.

If you do it right its fine but you need to understand what part kills all the stuff and not screw it up.
>>
>>986228
You realize that no one said that it wasn't being scrubbed before being piped to consumers. In fact nothing was said about anything going anywhere for any use for natural gas. But, straight out of the ground it is exactly as stated.

Also, Hydrogen sulfide is flammable and explosive. I have no clue why you'd think it wasn't.

Where I live we have sweet gas. That means x% of the gas is still hydrogen sulfide, but it isn't enough to warrant scrubbing it out. Sour gas is pretty rare here. Not so in most places.

>>
>>986556
UHhh. Some of the very worst fucking diseases come from when a fairly benign virus jumps species.

Avian Flu, Small pox is a mutation of cowpox, Bubonic Plague, Crutzfeld Jacobs (The prion is so simple it's hard to blame that on a cross species thing, but the most common vector in the non-cannibal world is people eating livestock)
>>
>>984084
That's freshish shit though, it not completely composted. Completely composted stuff is legal since it is no longer in any way feces. The process also takes about 2 years.
>>
If you build a bio digester which is basically a glorified septic tank then you can produce a class 2 fertilizer which is regulated by the government for special situations. It also creates methane gas which is pretty neat.
>>

They dump sludge on the field across the road every damn year, you are full of shit.
>>
>>986581
You can also use a small portion of the methane to pasteurize or even sterilize the fertilizer. Which some plants in Germany and India do already. Every single con against this is negated because of that.

>>986593
Ignorance breeds diseases.
>>
>>984080
If you look at dog piss in the park you see the grass dies in the middle (nitrogen and/or salt burn) but grows taller around the yellow death part (nitrogen fertilizes when it isn't too strong). 10:1 seems a good mix for urine. In fact I need to water the garden right now...

Wastewater specialist here.

“Urban sludges are a highly complex, unpredictable biologically active mixture of organic material and human pathogens, some of which are resistant to antibiotics or cannot be destroyed through composting sludge can contain thousands of industrial chemicals, including dozens of carcinogens, hormone disrupting chemicals, toxic metals, dioxins, radionuclides and other persistent bioaccumulative poisons,”

Composting would get rid of some pathogens but would not treat everything in the waste. You'd want to screen it, chemically treat it, settle it, digest the settled parts thoroughly, preferably aerobically and anaerobically, dry the digested sludge, then compost it over a long period, maybe add some lime at the end to neutralize the PH. Even then you might still be releasing contaminants into the environment.
>>
>>983659
When I was a kid my Grandfather would head over to the sewage treatment plant in our city on the last Saturday of the month, they would transfer the soilds from the waste treatment when they loaded up the belly dump trailers if you showed up they would load up your truck bed, Gramp had a Cadillac and brought a bunch of plastic 5 gallon buckets, filled the trunk and car with sludge, we always stopped for a burger on the way home, I wore a clothespin on my nose, back at home, he would spread the sludge all over the lawn, whole area smelled like a freshly laid turd for days, he always had the greenest lawn, told me the trucks hauled the sludge to a place out in the central valley where it was mixed with feed and fed to pigs, chickens and cows, nice

Just an interesting factoid: Only 10% of your daily dose of prozac is metabolized by the body therefore 90% is fleeted by urination. Water treatment plants were not designed to remove pharmaceuticals from waste water. Keep pissing on your crops and eating your soma corn faggot.
>>
>>983672
i can confirm this. i toured a facility where they had massive urine settling ponds. they ran the sewage through a device that separated the solids from the liquids. The solids became incorporated in a compost mix and the liquids sat in massive ponds for a period of time. both of these products were sold for unspecified agricultural purposes.
>>
>>983659
>Is it safe to fertilize crops with human waste?

No. you can make yourself sick by contaminating yourself with any diseases or bacteria you had successfully flushed out, and make others around you sick.

>Can I just empty all my pissbottles and shitjugs into my compost pile and let it rot, then use it next year?

can you? sure. should you? no. only the poorest of the poor use human waste to compost. it's viable, but its a really bad idea. It's like vegitariansm. liberal hippy retards push it more as a political ideology/religion rather than it being a logically sound idea.

you can use human waste to grow plants, and those plants will do fine, but you are risking your health to do so. Not only can you get sick from diseases, but you are also basically risking contamination from any other waste your wastes might have, like remnant medication or heavy metals.
