Hi /diy/

I'm planning in making a small, but functional, easy to reproduce 17x17 rubik's cube, and I wanna know what the most durable plastic is for fine moving parts.

thermoplastics are what they make gun parts plastics out of, check that stuff first

Thermosets you mean?

"Thermoplastic" covers a _huge_ variety of types with wildly different mechanical properties. It covers almost every type of plastic a consumer is likely to come into contact with, actually...

OP is almost certainly going to want to look at UHMW. It's very strong, highly resistant to abrasion, and has very low friction.

The two downsides I can see would be that it softens at a relatively low temperature (180°F; only a problem if it was black and you left it in direct sunlight on a hot day, but still) and has a high rate of thermal expansion, so you can't get really close tolerances out of it. Of course, what a machinist considers "close tolerances" and what's actually needed for a cube aren't even in the same ballpark, so I don't think that's necessarily too much of a problem.

Another good candidate would be acetal or delrin. Significantly stronger than UHMW at the cost of being more expensive and not quite as slippery.

Strictly speaking, GFR plastics are much stronger than either of these, but their friction and wear characteristics are very poor.

magnets would be the easiest way to do it
>>

but how do they work?

believe it or not, electricity. transferred electrons and shit

no matter what, it's not going to be very functional. it will turn, but you'll never mix it up and solve it.

its literally trash

electrons don't just fly through mid air faggot

Of course not.

When I read this post, the truth of it struck me like a bolt of lightning.

Air doesn't faggot mid electron air.

Well let me reword my sentence. Electrons don't just invisibly fly through mid air.

Peek, or Delrin, which is self lubricating as well, so it'd be nice and smooth running.
