Do you think I could use a metal band saw? Also how do you think I could clean up the cut edges?

A file or some grinding paper. I'd go with an angle grinder, it's much easier.

But I suppose you could use a metal band saw, but they move fairly slowly, and your soup stirrer or whatever looks fairly unwieldly, so clamping it down might be difficult.

Yeah, or a hacksaw.
Just give it a quick once-over on a belt sander to smooth the edges.

Thank you everyone! I will be going in next week to work on it. I'm cutting this and attaching it to a 12v generator to power a lamp. Hopefully it works out.

You're going to want to cut it below that support piece your fingers are above or it will fall apart. Trust me on this.

Cut it anywhere you want.

Make a new cross bar to support the shaft and extended it.

Don't forget your bearings.
