car took a shit while driving yesterday in the middle of the road, had to push it out of the way and luckily i had a trailerbro who was able to come pick it up. it was in the middle of an intersection and it just started sputtering and then died and wouldnt turn over.
before he came i did as much diagnosis as i could to see if i could find the issue

so he picked me up and dropped it off and i went to bed. i just went out there 30 minutes ago and used a little 12v 5ah battery to power the pump directly. i ran it backwards for about 30 seconds or so (on accident while trying to figure out the polarity), then i undid the last fuel line before the rail and ran it correctly to purge the air and hooked it back up, ran it off the battery again and it fired right up but ran rough like it was before it crapped out, hesitating and popping a lot and sounding like its only running on 4 out of 6 cylinders. i let it run until the temp started to show and went back and undid the battery and plugged it back into the harness and the pump was working and the engine smoothed out and revved up like normal. i turned if on and off a few times and unplugged and replugged the pump to see if anything changed but it runs just fine like it used to now.

im so fucking confused and have no idea what i could have possibly fixed and how to make sure it stays fixed. any ideas?

Could have been poor electrical connection, messing with battery is potential fix. Also could have had less gas than you though and just ran air through the lines, sounds like issue cleared up after adding fuel and troubleshooting the pump.

I would check fuses and connections for corrosion, consider using dielectric grease on any connections exposed to the elements. Also consider changing your fuel filter as it could be causing flow issues.

Additionally I would check your intake for any leaks between the Maf sensor and the lower intake manifold gasket. A leak may cause your engine to run lean. Your car will idle rough or even stall and be unresponsive to throttle.

Poor contact is a possibility, but I feel like it's unlikely considering all electrical connections are inside the car and have little tie down points on the body so it's not like its flopping all over the place. I just replaced every single fuse a couple months ago and there was no corrosion inside the connectors when I was messing with the pump. Fuel filter was changed about 6 months ago as well. There are no leaks on the intake, but what happened didn't seem like a pop intake coupler, it felt exactly what it feels like when you're trying to do the fuel filter and you pull the pump fuse and keep running the engine until it's out of pressure and it keeps sputtering and running rough as a runs out of line pressure. Also it started running fine without me touching the intake. One thing I was thinking as it may be vapor lock as this engine is kinda notorious for it, but its never had any problems with hot starts and I don't even know if it's possible to vapor lock while running.

So as I'm typing this its starting to sputter and backfire again, but I noticed it Huffs a ton of black smoke whenever it happens. Is it running extra rich? Or just not firing at times? Because I have a turbo 4 that spits smoke when you hammer it but not nearly as much as this.

Plugs wires cap and rotor are only months old. Checked spark from the coil to the distributor and it consistent and healthy. I'll check out the maf.
