So I have a bunch of this high carbon steel strap. It's all cut up into manageable sizes, not like in a giant roll. It's all painted black. I need to remove the paint and polish them up. Chemically stripping it would be great if it wasn't too caustic and didn't hurt the steel underneath. I thought about using some of those gray scotch brite pads, but before I spend any money on those I'd like to know if they'd work. Any suggestions?

What you want is an angle grinder, bench grinder, die grinder, or Dremel and attach a "Wire Wheel"--wire wheels come in varying types--some for light duty, some for heavy duty--you'll have to use your best judgement.
They are great from removing paint from metal surfaces.

how big are the strips? what kind of paint?
toss them in a plastic container with the stripper and see what happens. i really doubt paint stripper will hurt steel.
or use a bench grinder with a wire wheel

I'm worried that a wire wheel would leave some deep grooves that would be difficult to polish out afterward. I've never really used them though so I might be wrong.

The strips are a couple feet long, 1.25" wide. I don't know what kind of paint they used on them, something rust preventative I would guess since they're used for strapping up bundles of lumber and shit.

they do sell brass wire wheels if you're really concerned, but cheap steel wire wheels should be fine. you'd have to seriously force the strap into the wheel and hold it there to do damage

No, but there's a good chance it will eat through the plastic container. There's a reason powerful organic solvents generally come in a metal can.

I highly doubt you will pit any steel with this wire wheel.
That's why I said for you to use your best judgement when picking out a "wire wheel type".

>this wire wheel.
and you show a pic.
thanks for nothing, "best judgement" guy.

soak it in vinegar for a day, if that doesn't work then TSP for a couple hours. You'll have to reseal it so it doesn't corrode though.

Aircraft paint remover will get it off, be wayeasier than wire brushing and won't damage the metal

Knew a guy that wove a Chinese style rice patty hat from those. Would use it as a defensive tool when sword fighting. Pretty cool. Except in a lightning store.

if you just wanna remove paint, get a Polycarbide wheel you can get one for like $3 at harbor freight or any other hardware store. removes just about any finish with ease, paint/rust/bluing/etc always have a few on hand.
Not sure iframe it applies here, but I usually remove paint with liquid plumber.

such metal strips are mostly not painted. i know them only blued like gun blueing which is not stripable with solvents
