so a thrift store gave me this old Wurlitzer organ and it doesn't work, so i figured it would be fun to try and fix up.
this is my first project of the sorts so I don't really have much of a clue, thought I'd post some stuff about it here and maybe I could get pointed in the right direction
its a wurlitzer omni 2000
but the actual keyboard and components are a hohner symphonie d92
>the problem:
it turns on only for a split second and then loses power. I can hear the speakers turn on too. coming off of the switch there is a wire to some lights that retains power, so I think the problem is somewhere in this circuit board in the middle
one of my theories is that a fuse might be broken or burnt out, so i might try replacing these, or checking the underside and seeing if any of the circuits are broken

I love thrift stores bruh
Actually went to Goodwill today and got two good shorts for six bucks
Also have gotten lots of complete board games from the 80s
Can't help with that tho lol sorry
when I got it the dude at the store told me some kind of keyboard guru esque man said that there was an issue with the motherboard? I wouldn't even know where to begin on that
when i searched the wurlitzer name I couldn't find anything but more stuff turned up from searching the horner board. i found a service guide but its in german
>>1226218
i'm no electrowizard, but this looks a mite iffy to me m8
>>1226232
i'll be sure to check it out tomorrow, its dark now where im at so i can't work on it anymore today
>>1226215
i love synthesizers! currently building my own modular one.
currently working to fix a Synergy (only 800 made) and it seems like a similar fix to this one.
I suspect I know what the problem is. But to know for sure, can you read off the chips in the pic I attached?
>>1226238
also, if you could give me an exact name of the organ (if possible). the problem is definitely the motherboard and I think I can help.

this is the ID on the organ but I think wurlitzer was just selling hohner keyboards with their cabinets and brand because when I tried to search this I couldn't really find anything, but looking up Hohner Symphonie D92 gave me some better results

Start by running the selftest?
>To call up the test program, the upper C in the pedal is simultaneously depressed for about 1o sec with any register key (eg group I).
>The selftest starts with a new initialisation of the organ, audible at a "handclap". Then the various single tests are performed and a drumming instrument is played after a complete pass. In addition, the registers are switched on and off one after the other.
>In the event of a fault, the lights of the lamps cease and the error found is indicated as an arranger-rhythm.
>From test program can be jumped back to the normal organ program at any time by pressing the upper C in submenu.
>The ram memory is checked by inscribing and reading out random numbers. In the event of a fault, "swing" is displayed.
>The amplitude, octave and wave form memory of the meg building block is checked as in 3.1. In the event of a fault, the display shows "waltz".
>This program section checks the checksums of the 3 eprom memories. In the event of a fault, the display "bossa-nova", "samba" or "disco" appears (see point 4).
>If the 10 ms interrupt is faulty, "country" appears.
>An error function of the rhythm interrupt leads to the display "beguine".
>The error messages are coded as arrangeur rhythms, whereby the selection lamp must also be observed.

I found a datasheet for the m5L but cannot find anything on the other one.
Usually after 2 decades digital chips like those will go bad. replacing them is going to have to happen. You shouldn't even have to desolder it, the chip is in a socket that you can just pull out.
file:///G:/M5L8085AP-Mitsubishi%20Electric.pdf
also, for the power supply problem, look at the caps and see if they look popped or leaky. caps can go bad.
>>1226261
HON-MEG-3 is a custom Hohner chip, basically *the* sound chip. I see all of one place on the Internet that might have a replacement.
>redneck auto repair
No need to start replacing shit randomly because they should have died by now. That's a good way to burn out and use up parts, not actually fix a unit. At least we can see if the selftest still works. Maybe it's an EPROM that has lost its data and failed its checksum.
>>1226263
yeah youre right. if there is an eeprom i wouldnt put it past that it probably lost its data and would need to be replaced and reprogrammed.
>>1226271
well i would say to start with the power supply check. do you know how to use a multimeter?
>>1226261
>file:///G:/M5L8085AP-Mitsubishi%20Electric.pdf
>>1226293
we're on the internet. i can learn how to use anything
>>1226349
do you have a multimeter to learn how to use?
>>1226215
Please if you are doing this make yourself aware of what capacitors are. They can kill you. have fun
>>1226450
It's not a microwave anon, and it's a linear power supply, meaning caps discharge when the unit is switched off. Perhaps you should go learn something for yourself instead of parroting info you don't understand in situations where it doesn't apply.
>>1226452
My grandfather was killed by a capacitor that he removed from a linear power supply during WW2. He was only 7 so maybe that played a part, but don't be so quick to criticize.

Lighten up dickhead we are here to help each other. This could be OPs first foray into a hobby that could lead to a profession. He could have just as easily scored himself a microwave for free and cracked it open for a look / poke /zap.
>>1226510
>Lighten up dickhead we are here to help each other.
Which is why it is imperative that the info we give is concise and on point, not shot from the hip and irrelevant.
> He could have just as easily scored himself a microwave for free and cracked it open for a look / poke /zap.
I imagine he would have posted a microwave instead of an organ under that circumstance..
>>1226525
OK fair enough. Dear OP as a retired health professional I implore you read up a little on the basics of electronics. The majority of burns/ cardiac arrest patients I have had under my care who fucked about with old appliances say "oh I unplugged it first" or "I cut the wires on the cylinder thing first"
>>1226562
make sure you get/borrow an autoranging multimeter. you could get a manual range one but they're a lot more annoying to work with (opinion).
capacitors, whether or not they discharge automatically, you should always be careful with. get a screwdriver and touch both terminals of the cap with the metal of the screwdriver (of course make sure you're not touching the metal). after you do that they'll be safe to touch.
i wont go to the trouble to tell you how to use a multimeter, cause theres plenty of tutorials online. But I would test the voltage output of the PSU first.
so yeah look up how to measure DC voltage on a multimeter and use that and check the output of the PSU. And make SURE you'er not measuring the mains voltage (wall outlet).
>>1226238
I'm also working on a modular synth,
do you have some pics/tips/tricks/ideas to share?
>>1227105
not really. just follow schematics online and lay them out on a board.
for me I like designing my own boards and getting them maufactured by EasyEDA.
For audio circuits you want to keep your connections close to avoid ground noise. And also ground connections should go on a ground plane.
>>1226215
fugged playin wit you damn organ yo - get a MultiMeter 1st (HF, 4.99), read instructions, learn to measure batteries, watch some youtubes, learn how to stick it confidently into wall mains and if either meter or you blows up? you know, you did it wrong. After that, learn how power supplies work, figure out how its wired, disconnect it from mainboard and measure output on that, a sensibly suggested. And DONT fuck with anything, until you know what and why you are doing so - this is why you fuck around and learn with junk you DGAF about 1st.
tldr - get meter, learn meter, first. And maybe dust the fucking thing (better compressor/canned air than vacuum tho) also.
>>1227408
jej, or just don't plug it into the current meter.
>>1226293
>well i would say to start with the power supply check. do you know how to use a multimeter?
$100 its got bad caps in the powersupply, Figure out what voltages should come out where and if they are present.
>>1227408
>the wire to the meter on the hot side caught on fire
because you're an idiot and did it wrong or just lying
the same current flowing through the 'hot side' lead was flowing through the other lead too
>>1227543
>the same current flowing through the 'hot side' lead was flowing through the other lead too
not if the meter has diode protection. I had the same thing happen, and only the hot wire melted.
>>1227543
>because you're an idiot
Like I implied when I said that I was 18 and it was the first time I did it. Have since done it countless times with no issues using a proper meter.
>>1227552
>not if the meter has diode protection
>Kirchhoff's Current Law doesn't apply to me
