Cut the ends flat and use a stapler to connect the two ends and then take a lighter to it to clean up any stray fuzz.

Replacing them is quite easy. I've ended up replacing most of the ones in my home, in Spain. When I called a guy who does this, he would be charging 15euros/hour. It takes me 12 minutes to change one. You do need to be a bit crafty, though.
