If it can't be panned, then surely it would not be a problem. I think that if you only have pyrite, and no experience with panning, you can be fooled. If there is gold and pyrite mixed, then they behave and look so different that it is hard to be fooled. Which is to say, if OP has found no gold, he might have gotten duped by pyrite.

All my experience with gold prospecting is via Discovery Channel.

Get a tile, scrape the largest chunk along the unglazed back. If the streak it leaves is actually gold colored, it's gold. If it's dark, it's pyrite.

Ah, as far as verification, another good way to check if it's pyrite or gold is to give it a couple of smacks with a hammer, or even decent sized rock on an anvil type object, i.e. another decent sized rock. If the piece you hammer on flattens out, it's gold, if it shatters / crumbles into powder, it's pyrite. Although, you would have to have a something a little bit more substantial than flakes.

if it's gold, it won't dissolve.
if it's pyrite (fools gold), it will dissolve, stain the solution yellow, bubble a bit and release H2S gas (smell like rotten eggs/farts)
