Hey /diy/ I don't know if this is the right board for this thread, but I need help. I want to try upgrading this pc to a basic gaming pc, I'm on a bit of a budget so reusing my old tower would be nice. It's a standard Dell Vostro 200 with Windows Vista Home basic as OS(I'm probably just gonna go to the newest version of Windows anyway). Is it doable? I know I'll have to replace most if not all of it.
>>
>>1212184
Why would we look up specs for you?
>>
>>1212185
I ain't asking for specs. I have them: https://www.cnet.com/products/dell-vostro-200-core-duo-e2160-1-8ghz-2gb-ram-160gb-hdd-xp-home-series/specs/
I just dont know what they mean, I have zero experience with this.

budget?
>>
>>1212190
$350-$500, mostly depends on how much I can make from my summer job. That's my estimate
>>
I think the e2160 was lga775 socket.
See if you can find a used E6600 on ebay or something. and a used nvidia 750ti.

you should now be able to play games at 1080p on medium settings.
>>
If you want a PC that can game, do not use this.
IF you have 250$ to spend, do this
Get a Dell T3500 on eBay. About 100$ with shipping. Don't care for the CPU, just try to make sure it has 8+GB of RAM, also make sure it has the Windows 7 COA. Those ones have a better CPU cooler.
Than get something like an X5570, should be around 20$. Quad core, 8 threads. Clocks to 3.2ghz boost
Than get some 1tb hard drive or so
Than get something like a GTX 770/780/780ti, radeon HD 7950/7970, R9 280x/290/290x, GTX 970.
Also make sure to replace the thermal paste on CPU
I've built 3 PC's in t3500's, one for my bro and 2 for me. One of the ones I built for my self got me a 250$ profit.
Be careful on the Gou height, and if you get a GPU that needs two pcie power than you'll need an adapter. If you want to spend more money I can help you get a better rig on the used market
Don't use LGA 775 or 771 for modern gaming, it doesn't work.
>>
>>1212394
That case might be to small for a good gpu. Also was the psu enough for a 7850
>>
>>1212445
Case is large. Built like a tank. It can supply a 7850. My 2 PC's have Had a 770 and a 670, and my bros has a R9 290
>>
>>1212456
Thanks anon thats some solid advice. Got any more bargain builds?
>>
Full specs on old PC and budget?
>>
>>1212561
IF you want to overclock get a HP z400, haven't gotten one of those so I don't know how the inside is. But,I think you can use a program to overclock, or a custom bios
If you're under 300$,don't go above 3rd gen Intel CPU's
Don't spend the 100+$ on a x58 motherboard that can overclock, waste of money
If you don't mind waiting, try to win bids. But don't forget to not go over the going rate
First gen i5's are not that bad bang for the $, just don't get a hp motherboard, they have propitary connectors.
Don't buy computer parts from China, better to be safe than sorry
When buying RAM make sure it isn't ECC, or check compatibility with motherboard. ECC will usually have an extra chip in the middle, be listed as server memory or have a heat spreader on it
Never get a motherboard that has "bulging" capacitors. Board is failing when that happens.
If buying a PSU make sure the motherboard power is a 24 pin,or a 20+4 pin power
Search up AMD fine wine technology. Tl;dr- Because of architecture, all of AMD's GPU's that are from the Radeon HD 7xxx line up or newer(all R7 or R9's) will get improvements
Nvidia cards have an Apple esque brand premium
Never use cpuboss or gpuboss. Use https://www.cpu.userbenchmarks.com or replace CPU with GPU, userbenchmark is much more accurate
Intel has a lot better used market than AMD, better bang for your $
Xeon vs. I7, go with Xeon. A Xeon has prob been in some data base basically catered its life. They are nearly the same
Going with a used prebuilt(Dell, HP)will give you better value
Would not recommend things like alienware used
Always factor in shipping
IF you think your PSU can't handle your system, than upgrade it. Just find the TDP of your CPU and GPU add them together and add about 50 to 75. If it is 50 watts or less to the rating of your PSU, upgrade it
Don't get not trustworthy PSU's could kill your system.
Check sellers rating
When getting a PSU, make off eBay, make sure it is used. It will get rid of the fake PSU's

Thanks, just don't want people to do the same mistakes I've made, or almost made.
Also have one more to add
RAM will sometimes say AMD only. Generally that is true. Something something, RAM made to work with how AMD had their motherboard memory controller working together or some crap like that

It will be near impossible. Dell uses a proprietary form factor called BTX. The psu is proprietary. The motherboard is dell made, and it lacks inputs needed. The bios is crippled so you cannot adjust voltages etc to over clock.

I suggest putting that money up and save more. Another 700.00 to 1000.00 and you can make a beast machine.
>>
>>1212772
You dont need 1k to make a beast machine unless you a dumb nigger and buy an i7
>>
>>1212184
Screw basic. You can easily build a good gaming rig for $500 and substantially less if you look for deals on ebay/craigslist. Since this is 4chan I'll just assume you'll have the OS/software covered already.

Okay, you win. The 80 dollar difference between the i5 6600k and the i7 6700k is a huge bank breaker. I guess if you work at micky d's thats a weeks paycheck. I see your point.
>>

Just like the $100 difference between the 7850 and the 7970 thats now $180. Almost 3 of my micky d paychecks

Man i hope budget computer anon comes back with more walls of tips
>>
More tips
Try your best to go for 4 true cores, 2 core with hyperthreadig isn't good
Motherboards break faster than CPU's which is why x58 motherrboards are so expensive
i3's are bad, just don't please
Not all i5's are 4 cores, i5 6xx are 2 cores with hyperthreading
Again, do not get crap from China, especially motherboards that are made there and sold as new
When buying used parts on eBay, make sure to select used on the left side
If you're buying an oem computer, research it before hand. If you can over clock it, common issues
MAKE SURE that your GPU isn't too long
If a GPU doesn't support DX11 don't get it
If you have a good CPU, try to get a DX12 GPU
If I'm correct anything in the GTX4xx and newer has dx12 support
If 1080p gaming try to get more than 2GB vram
Radeon HD 5xxx series and up supports dx11, HD 77xx, 78xx and 79xx support DX11.2 and all R7, R9, RX support DX12
If you plan on modern gaming, do not get anything older than LGA 1366 or 1156 socket
Amazon is usually bad for cheap/used computer parts
Always be careful of RAM prices, they are always fluctuating
Getting an SAD is dumb if you have a small budget, you'll only get better boot times unless you have it as only storage
Always check Craigslist before buying something okn eBay. I got a 130$ GPU with 16GB ddr3 (gskill) for about 110$
Never get a defective GPU, not worth the fix, ever
Also on Craigslist, can't hurt to offer any amount or a trade
If you can see a computer or part tested before buying, do so
D
If buying a hard drive, the large sticker should have a date, anything over 5 years old, be careful.
If you can, offer to meet the person where they are, and try to use it as a bargining chip
Windows 10 can be used for free, download their installer, and when installing IS, select that you have no product key. Only thing you can't change is personalization things. But y u can set a wallpaper if you right click the image and set as pape
Ubuntu is really good. Less resources heavy, and it is fun
>>
>>1212974
SAD should be a SSD and sorry for the random D in it, still on phone

BTX isn't proprietary. It was supposed to replace ATX but failed, so there isn't much of it out there.
>>
>>1213519
>And let budget anon post his walls

Nobody is stopping him
But when he goes
>i3's are bad, just don't please
Then on the other hand says
>First gen i5's are not that bad bang for the $
And then proceeds to say
>Don't use LGA 775 or 771 for modern gaming

Its really really baffling, and thats just on the CPU front. His whole posts are sweeping generalizations without context that arent always true.

>yelling about muh cores and threads and ignoring IPC

Shows how out of touch he really is
>>
>>1213538
I'm just trying to focus on sub 250$ budget.
I had a computer with a E5450, I had the LGA 771 to 775 mod and had it at 3.5 ghz , I know it's better than some first gen i3's, but my 770 was being bottlenecked hard core in most games, and I could've gotten a 1st gen i5 for a little bit more, for better results
I say i3's are bad because if I'm correct they are all 2 cores 4 threads
I know that pairing a e5450 with a 770 was bad, but I didn't think it would be as bad as it was
Please feel free to correct me with anything
I won't be mad if I'm wrong, better to learn now than later.
>>
If you have $350-$500 budget, you can buy the ff:

Mobo: Asus H110M-K
GPU: Palit StormX 1050 Ti
CPU: Intel Pentium G4560
PSU: Seasonic 12ii 520w Bronze 80+
RAM: HyperX Fury 1x8gb DDR4 2400
Some Corsair fans 4x120mm

I all bought this for a $450 at our local store. Can Fallout 4 at high.

I'm planning on buying a higher end sometime in the future, but this procie so far is pretty damn good for 2 cores and hyper threading.
>>
>>1213584
What type of mother boards should i be looking for when buying a used pc. Are some older more compatable with newer cpus.
