How you guys feel about reel mowers? Been looking at trying to get a used fiskars momentum.

How do you mow your grass? What do you prefer?

Why not buy a donkey?

>eats your grass and keeps it trimmed 24/7
>eats and kills snakes just for fun
>bonus: you can suck his massive cock anytime, faggot.
>>
Seriously... why?

$200 so you can be a special snowflake with heat stroke, or $250 for a self-propelked Toro you only have to turn.

Look for more important ways to be unique.
>>
Don't be a pussy boy, get a toro like a man
>>
Holy shit, this thread was made for me. Recently bought my first house and I was looking at one of these. Parents want to get me a housewarming gift and dad said about some $200 battery powered lawn mower like they have (some koyobo one or whatever) but I've been looking long and hard at this one.
My lawn is flat, and I figure this reel mower would pay for itself. No gas, no oil, no electricity expenses.
>>1211610
Are reel mowers that fucking hard to use?
>>
>>1211618
They're not hard to use but they have downsidez
>suck ass for any yard over half an acre
>can't cut super tall grass for some reason
>if you have dandelions fucking forget it

If you got a small flat yard tho there's no reason to not use one
>>
>>1211623
what is the problem with dandelions?
>>
>>1211624
Too thicc and tall for the mower to cut so you have to take a weed wacker to them
>>
>>1211603
Just go to yard sales and flea markets, you can probably find one for 20 bucks.
>>
>>1211626
I just bought a powered reel mower for $20 at a sale. 3 HP B&S motor. I got it more for the motor then the mower but I still looked into getting it working. Turns out that sharpening the blades is a fucking pain in the ass. Also, while it leaves a great looking cut, it only works well on certain types of grass.
>>
>>1211623
I have a small yard that's part of a duplex. I know that there's a single tall tree with some exposed roots, and the grass looks like it has a lot of clovers in that area.
I also want to be able to mow at random times. Pretty much any time that isn't normal mowing hours (I typically see people mowing between 11am-6pm) I want to mow before 7am or before work at 3 am. That friskars reel mower won't make any noise, and I can ninja mow. Remaining hidden from neighbors is a game I play.
>>
>>1211603
it probably looks easier than it is

propane mods are not that expensive and more reliable than gas
>>
>>1211634
>I want to mow before 7am or before work at 3 am.
The grass will be wet with dew at this time.
The wheels will likely just spin instead of turning the reel when you push it.
>>
>>1211607
this is why i keep chickens, they dont eat muxh grass but they tuen it over pretty well. now i plant veg where theyve been and rotate them

It's not that difficult. Good workout. Supperior cut. The only plus to gas mowers is how fast they are works for how lazy most ppl are

>>
>>1211623

If you have a reel mower you really can't let your lawn slide or it's going to be impossible to cut it once the grass is too high.

The first time you need to borrow a neighbor's real mower because you let your lawn go for a few weeks you're going to feel like a doofus.

Literally this, a scythe costs the same price and will cut your grass better, not give a single fuck about high grass, and its way easier to sharpen the blades. Google Scythe supply and read up on it

fucking useless unless you have a very small, perfectly flat lawn

>How do you mow your grass?
I don't, I let it grow as long as it wants to. I'll mow it a few times in the spring with a 4 stroke mower and a few times in the fall to make leaf removal easier. I enjoy the wild flowers and so on all summer long. Also, it annoys the neighbours.

>>
>>1212167
How is that autism, it's just a different way of doing your lawn, especially if it's small or has a lots of thick growth that you can't mow over. If anything it's good to have just to trim around trees and do edges near the curb

>>
>>1211603
Don't do it OP. I recently bought a new gas mower after using a reel mower for 2 years. Even after sharpening the blades several times, it took too long and too much effort of going back over spots 2 or 3 times.
>>
>>1211913
well when it rains

>>1212280
your "chickens" will absolutely desteoy the ground below them. where do they sleep at night? is the grass under them fine?
>>
>>1211603
Sure what the hell.
For about average size for the front and back yard, it works pretty well. Takes about an hour to get a single pass through, but that's including wacking (electric edger) some hardier mother fuckers so you can get an even mow. That's about the only draw back, really, is that it won't eat up everything. But, do yourself a favor and just get like a $100 one at home depot. For $200+ you might as well save up for an electric mower.

>>
>>1212276
Can confirm
>>
>>1212270
yeah, I used to work at one years ago.
>>
>>1211603
I got one for free. It's 2/10 to use if your lawn is not too tall and without leafy weed stuff growing amidst grass and the ground is very flat. If even one of those things isn't true then the experience is -9000/10.
>>
Reel mowers can be pretty nice, but they're annoying to sharpen and even in my area, which is full of niche businesses which maintain old things, it's hard to find somebody who knows how to sharpen them. This is /diy/ though, so you should try sharpening it yourself if you can. Why not buy a STIHLâ„¢ brand STIHLâ„¢ mower?

>>1211603

I have a reel mower, and it works fine for me and my size yard. It actually made my lawn look better because the previous occupants cut it too short with a gas mower, and mine lowers to 1" minimum. I let it get long on purpose, reel mowed it, and it looks way better.

There are major downsides though. They usually don't cut crabgrass or other stiff grasses, or stiffer kinds of weeds......like at all unless you're overly methodical about it. So if you have a crap ton of weeds in your yard, it will look bad and you're going to have to trim or pull them all by hand. Then again, you should be killing weeds instead of trimming them anyway.
>>
>>1211924
>lazy
Right. I'm lazy cause I use a riding mower to keep up with a 3-acre plot in the Midwest (shit grows 3"/week) while working 60+ hours a week and trying to raise a kid.
>>
>>1211605
in all seriousness though I saw an asian lady cutting grass with small paper scissors next to a house I was working at. she finished the probably 100 m2 lawn in like two hours and the lawn looked like the putting green on a fancy golf course afterwards

Its an airtight skirt, there is a blower fan above the blade that pulls air down and out. The mower easily hovers like a hoverboard over the grass, you can slide it side by side and down into ditches very easily and safely.

You have to have a very flat yard, its main job is just for ditches not really as a main mower.
>>
Reel mowers have a reputation for being hard to push, which I find extremely puzzling. I have the cheapest China made reel mower I could find, and I sometimes mow my entire lawn with one hand, barefoot while carrying my one year old son in my other arm. That's how I put him to sleep when he is crying and too tired to calm himself. He will watch the spinning reel and the flying grass clippings, completely mesmerised. Then his head will rest on my shoulder, still watching. Then his eyelids will start to droop and eventually close, but he's not asleep just yet. If I stop mowing, he starts up at full attention. No, he is just resting, listening to the hypnotic shlk-shlk-shlk-shlk of the reel shearing blades of grass against the bedknife. After a few minutes, I will hear gentle snoring in my left ear. Then I can put him to bed.

My three year old son, alas, can no longer be put to sleep this way, but if I plan ahead correctly, I can wear him out sufficiently by having him mow some grass with the same reel mower, modified with a shorter handle, an activity he finds most rewarding.

Reel mowers are not for every lawn, of course not, but there is no reason for them to be as obscure a thing as they have become. I'd wager that a decent reel mower is the best option for the majority of lawn owners out there. Quiet enough to put my baby boy to sleep, safe enough for me to use barefoot and sufficiently easy to push that my three year old can operate it. Perfect for my needs.

Oh, and it fucks up dandelions like they were not even there, I have no idea what the hell >>1211625 is on about, or what kind of mutant dandelions he's got in Pripyat, or wherever the fuck he lives.

>Are reel mowers that fucking hard to use?
They are inferior to powered mowers in every way. My dad got one when we got our first house, and quickly settled for a gas mower.
>>
>>1211618
Reel mowers blow if your yard is larger than a postage stamp. You not only have to push them, but they resist you to provide power to the blades. They also don't work if the grass it wet at all. They take twice as long as a mower at the very least.

Have a reel mower and gas mower. Honestly it looks like it worked really quick and easy. Also looks like it left nice piles of grass that would be easy to pick up by hand.

I have a big yard and would never use one, but it looks like its not a horrible idea for a yard that size.
