I tried to ask /o/ but they're a bunch of busriders so I'll try again here.

I want to rebuild pic related. I'm pretty sure I'm capable of it but I lack a press and large gear puller.

Can anyone with experience tell me if I can get it done without them?
I'm currently toying with the idea of using a bottle jack and 2x4s to rig a press, but that doesn't exactly seem like it would work if I needed to apply any real force.

Yes you can make a press using a jack and wood, but be aware that if it fails it can seriously injure you.

You can borrow pullers for free (refundable deposit) at places like auto zone, but if you do this sort of work you should eventually buy your own.

Also, you will probably need snap ring tools and special tools to align things; quite often you can rig up or do without special tools, but be aware that you might hit a road block and have to carry the pile of parts to a pro.

Get a manual. If you don't have a really good manual you will probably screw up.

Good luck. I rebuilt similar but simpler transmissions years ago. It's fun if you know what you are doing (or can figure it out) and you have adequate tools. If you lack either it's an exercise in frustration.

I suppose everybody here already knows this, but if part 206 is a pressed in bushing there is a cool way to remove it. Pack it nearly full of grease, and place a rod in it that is a good fit. Then hit the rod with a large hammer, and the grease will partly spurt out around the rod, but will also push the bushing out a bit. Repeat as needed.

I've got all the hand tools I think I'd need and have professional experience as a mechanic (not automotive but there's a lot of overlap). I'm looking for a shop manual now.

The first time I pulled an engine I bought 5 4x4s, some rope, and pic related. It worked because it was a smallish 4 cylinder.

The next time I pulled an engine I rented a proper jack, and of course it was infinitely better. It's fun to improvise, but whenever possible rent or buy the correct equipment.

Are the gears and bearings likely to be pressed on with significant force? Just for reference, could I knock them off with a punch?
>>
>>1207946
Ave has a nice video of this. He put some bits of rag in there also to seal it a bit.

>Just for reference, could I knock them off with a punch?

Maybe a real transmission guy will comment, but in my experience the gears simply slide off once you've taken care of snap rings. Some parts have spring loaded balls but that's also easy to disassemble.

As for pressed on or pressed in bearings or bushings, you might be able to remove one with a punch but you might damage it. To put them back together without a proper press you can sometimes get by with something like a socket that matches the diameter of the part you are trying to install. Just be super careful when starting off so that it goes in straight, and once you know it has started, you can be a bit more forceful.
>>
>>1207958
Depends. Most likely will need a bearing splitter set and a few pullers. A manual tranny is a bitch and will fuck you over quick
>>

Check your local Auto shop (O'Reilly, AutoZone, etc) - there's a possibility they will let you rent the tools for way cheaper than it would cost to buy or build them. I replaced my suspension and rented some spring compressing tools from them, worked great.

>there's a possibility they will let you rent the tools for way cheaper

true, but quite often the deal is that the loaner tools are free, but you have to leave a deposit equal to the value of the tools, meaning that you can keep them if you like, because you bought them. The nice part about that is that you can keep them for one day or three weeks and the "rental" cost is the same.

so if OP is a huge poorfag and can't part with a hundred dollars or so for a week, then maybe that's not in his plans.

>nv1500

I literally bought a working NV1500 on craigslist for $50. It came out of an S10. I threw on a new clutch and swapped it into the truck.

If you are just trying to get your vehicle back on the road, its worth looking on craigslist.
I have the ability now to rebuild the other one on the bench, but I dont know if its worth it. If this one eventually grenades itself I might just get rid of the truck

>>1208182
Also they can be found pretty easily because people swap in V8s into S10 bodies a lot. They dont give a shit about 5 speed 2.2l engines and sell them cheap

Another idea. If you know a local wrencher they may be willing to press some parts in exchange for a cold pint or two. I do this all the time for lift space. Plus I also clean up around their bay (shitty job no one likes to do). But for that I get great advice, help, and free lift time. Not that I need to do this, could pay to have things done. Just love to do stuff myself.

seriously? this is your cousin, or an actual guy?

I'm having a lot of trouble picturing myself going into a garage with a fucking cold beer to get "lift space". so much of the bro shit posted here is not reality for the rest of us.

Not that guy, but it depends on where you live

Seems rather ghetto. Why no ball bearing race?

ok, cool. where in america can you walk into a garage with a cold beer and the guy you never met before says "cool you can use this lift for 8 hours".

>Seems rather ghetto. Why no ball bearing race?

new to mechanics? have a seat over here, and be silent for a year or two.
>>
>>1208210
Nope. I've known these folks for over 20 years.
Like I said, "If you know a local wrencher."
>>
>>1208182
Nothing on CL around here. I did find a local guy who would do the job for $250 if I bring him the trans and parts. Not very /diy/but I may let him handle it while I do the other repairs I have planned and get it done twice as fast.
>>
I rebuilt my 4r100 on my workbench with handtools and some special tools I had to fabricate. Manuals are much easier. If you are any bit mechanically inclined, I'd say... don't be scared, but pay attention to the orientation upon reassembly. Sometimes even the most minor things like thrust washers need to go in a certain direction.
>>
>>1208212
Have changed a good few clutches actually. All of them had ball races in there.

I have a puller for this but the one I did last week was so tight the puller wouldn't remove it.
I tried grease but the bearing was so tight it blew off the front seal and grease leaked around the back seal so much that I thought it was only sealed on one side.
I used wet paper towel strips and got it out.
I tore the towel into strips about 1"x3" pieces and wet them with all the water they would hold.
Stuff a piece in
Hit it with rod
Stuff a piece in
Hit it with rod
again and again
It ended up taking most of a sheet of towel - but it finally came out.

Good Luck finding the transmittion manual. Haynes skips this telling the reader you have to bring it in.
