This. If the hole is bigger than a quarter I suggest putting something in it for the filler to adhere to like that special mesh they make for doing exactly what you're trying to do.

Sure, just paint it. Use flat paint, put it on really thick, that should work for you. That's a complete lie, but it's what you want to hear, so have a ball being a lazy, adolescent idiot with a ceiling that has a butthole in it.

Sounds like the hole's too big for filler.

Patch over it with a drywall repair patch, filler over that.

If it's more than a 6" hole, cut out the drywall and replace it.
