Any advice on making a new zippo look old?
I'm not trying counterfeit old zippos or anything, i need to make an old 30-40 year old looking zippo for a prop with custom paint and engraving.

tumbler and pumice
or sand blaster

I just pulled this idea out of my ass.
Remove the inner lighter. Put the case in a tied off sock or something with a handful of coins. Put the sock in the dryer with no heat and tumble it for hours and hours until it looks suitably shitty.

put it down in your drive way and then back your car over it. if it's any good it will still work and you can sell it to a hipster for at least $5.

I fucked my plain brass one up by using brass cleaner on it while it still had polish on it

What kind of paint would work best for painting it?
I don't think i could prime it without priming the whole thing.

For a simple image like that they are generally engraved and then enamel paint it put into the engraving.
give it to a teenager
I bought one, biggest waste of $10 in my life. Bic lighters are superior.

take low grit sandpaper, dirt, rocks, grinder brush, whatever....and scratch it up
skip it across a parking lot a few times
make a stencil
use nail polish to paint on design
lightly scratch up some more
can I use paint thinner as zippo fuel?

Would acid etching work for that?
I have a vinyl cutter i can use to make the stencil.

Seriously. The damn things dry out ever other hour.
If you like an old style brass looking one, this is the way I did mine. I found a black zippo that was made of brass, and hand sanded to with a rough grit until I started to see the slightest bit of metal, then went to an ultra fine. You can start with ultra fine but using the rough to start his faster. once completely sanded I got a pair of my work pants (I work in a factory) that had a decent amount of grease an other stuff on it and polished it for about an hour or so. That and the amount I've used it has caused it to look like an antique brass zippo. As for zippos with graphic designs on them I can't help much there

>not just buying an old zippo

The only place around where I live that sells old ones are antique shops who rape you on prices.

Man, if only there was some kind of online auction site where you could buy an old Zippo for about $10 shipped. Fuck that would be convenient, huh? Gee, does anyone know of such a site? An auction site for the web? 'AuctionWeb' if you will.

Almost like... storage bays full of things to sell... electronically, so you could see them on your computer....

You can use many things but most of them will ruin the rope thingy way quicker (im retarded dont question). Just buy lighter fluid it's not that expensive. But of course you can try it.
Anyone know if plain chrome or brass zippos have any kind of enamel coating or anything?
>>1206781
I think the brass ones do, but chrome ones don't need one. Acetone will clean off the coating just fine.

yeah the problem is the compartment on the top is quite a big volume and not a great seal either. I find ronson lighters slightly better in that regard since they have just a wick cap. But yeah, best bet is generally a bic.
Speaking of Zippo, does anyone have experience with their repair service?
I have a ZIppo that got completely fucked by a bleach spill to the point that it ate through the hinge, if i sent that in any chance id get a functioning Zippo back?
>>1206922
I haven't sent in a lighter that was horribly abused like yours, but when I sent in a lighter to get a new hinge pin and a pipe insert, I also included a knife that had been beat to hell with a completely unusable blade, and that was returned with a new blade.
This project is proving to be much harder than i expected.
Anyone know what this stuff is?

Probably an epoxy paint.
At least, that's what I'd be using.
Gathering stuff for this project, will post updates as i go.
Zippo, paint, vinyl stencils, and airbrush acquired, project starting after i sell my kidney so i can buy a 6 pack of 9 volt batteries.

Stencil on, no turning back now.
>>1211560
Etching finished, time to paint.
>>1211591
Painting done, yellow went on too thick but most of the paint is coming off anyway.
>>1211598
And its done, might need a little detail work but im satisfied.
The etching is nice and deep so its not going anywhere.

If they can't fix it, they'll replace it.

Looks good except for the extra paint on the chrome part. Could use some dents on the corners. Don't forget about soot on the chimmney.
