Hey /diy/. I need help designing a device that can measure offset in thousandths of an inch on a moving steel pipe. What I have so far, suggestions for improvement.

Try using a dial indicator first, that may work.

Thickness and diameter of steel will be a factor.

I would suggest solid invar if you want tolerances below 10 thousandths

otherwise temperature is going to have a major effect
