Yep cool story. So my mother passed and I've got her family firepocker (don't ask me why it's a thing, mums side of the family is weird and Scottish) anyways it's well over a hundred years old. The shaft is just a thick metal wire, and it doesn't have a handle. What's the best way to make and attach a handle for it?

How long is it? How much use / abuse dose it get?

you could turn a handle down on a lathe then drill out the center and use some epoxy to hold it on if its gonna get light use.

Or wrap it in some leather or something.

have a gif related to the pics in your thread.

this is casting

this is forging. This is pretty typical of the fireworks show we get in our closed die presses when we spray lube on the hot parts. And I think the guy in the back has an old optical pyrometer, neat.

I work for a large aerospace forge, AMA.

Enjoy this gem from the 50's.

Well this is the magical piece of metal. I'm using another poker st the moment but I'd like to use this one instead. Reminds me of my mum.

I'm looking to get a small lathe, and make some small things before I make the handle for this.

I have a file handle that looks like this, Inlike how it looks and feels. So what's the best way of making the steel cap on the top, and of attaching it.

There is no blacksmithing thread. So this is now a blacksmithing and metalworking general thread.
Mainly cause I have a question. My steel (C60, good stock) cracked while I was making a hachet. I am assuming it did not get hot enough. I'm using a gas forge, and since I forge outdoors...it gets the steel to a pretty orange color. Easily smithable. But I deem it might be too cold? Am I right?

what's titanium alloy like, and what colours does it make at temp?
>>
>>1198780

What else am I supposed to do with a failed hachet attempt?
>>
>>1198783
It cools off much faster than steel, your working time is much shorter. If it's too cold it tears open. At forging temp everything is glowing orange.

sounds like an expensive nightmare.
makes nice birds though
>>
>>1198623
Do you guys actually use different titanium alloys or do you just throw Grade 2 and TiAl6V4 at every application that comes your way?
>>
>>1199394
Most everything is 6-4, but there are a few other varieties that come through. It's not up to us to choose material, everything is customer driven.
>>
>>1199467
Do you have to use an argon atmosphere for every hot process, i.e. forging and heat treatment or can some of them be done without protective gas?
>>
>>1199467
>>1199972

I used to design motors for satellites, and one customer had a requirement for a titanium housing to be machined from a forging about a foot in diameter.

After we had shipped about 20 or so at a cost of a few hundred grand for the motors, someone found out that purchasing had taken our drawing which was titled Forging and required all the forging Mil specs but had somehow been able to buy castings, which tend to have voids.

But as is almost always the case, the experts at our customer looked at all the numbers and said that if no voids were visible, the parts would be ok. I say "almost always the case" meaning that once something is shipped or installed in a higher assembly, people will do anything to avoid fixing the mistake if it seems reasonable to accept it.
>>
>>1199972
My facility does not, we do everything in regular atmosphere. Another facility does isothermal forging and their work is done in a vacuum.

>>1199988
The aerospace industry can be just as stupid as many others. Our customer source inspectors are generally not technical at all, but they are tasked with inspecting the product and making sure it meets all the correct specs. They usually lock onto things like "the part number is not stamped in the right spot."
>>
>>1198623
That is a gem all right, I heard about the super heavy presses (thanks for the tech, germany) but I've never seen one in action. And those machining operations...
>>
>>1198715
If you were working it at a bright orange then that's pretty good temp for what you're trying to do and what you're using. It sounds like it could have been any number of reasons it cracked though. Look into delaminations and inclusions, as well as heat treating, tempering, and quenching. Any one of these processes could have caused a crack. Sorry bro, gonna need more information to be of much help.
>>
>>1200376
it's really amazing what they did before computers. It's also amazing that the presses are still running.
