Hey /diy/

As a project I'm making a boat. So far almost everything is hand made even the out board which isn't too powerful. Where do you guys buy your electric motors? I'm looking for high HP, preferably 36V (can be 24V), sub $1000 motors. I'm currently using a 1/3 Hp electric lawn mower motor that works but is not every powerful although it runs for a long time.

>>inb4 google
I trust this board a lot more.
>>
Your pic is not a DC motor, or not at the voltages you describe.

Post a pic of your boat or some reasonable idea of what you mean by high HP and we can help you.
>>

Pic is what came up when I googled "electric motor on google".

Boats at my university on the other side of the us from me so i can't really post a picture.

It's about 200 Pounds without anyone on. Were going to use two 24V Lead gel Car batteries in series (I can find the brand if needed) or make a new system with two 36V batteries if we can find a motor for it. Were currently using the rechargeable battery the motor came with.

By high horsepower I mean from 5-10 HP

I would like to start off by saying, I am NOT shilling this website, I do not work for them, or get paid to sponsor them.

that being said, the fucking thing should be in the sticky, I seriously could not find a website any cheaper then this.

http://www.surpluscenter.com/Electric-Motors/

I needed to replace my tablesaw motor, and for the asking prices on ebay/craigslist for USED motors were the EXACT price for a NEW motor from surplus center.. so its pretty fucking good. my little hidden gem.

a good motor for even something weighing 700lbs total.

http://www.surpluscenter.com/Electric-Motors/3-Phase-Motors/3-Phase-Motors-Base-Mount/?page_no=1&fq=ATR_Motors_HP:7\-1/2

the only downside of the website for me, is they charge for shipping and hell it ain't cheap, expect 35-50 dollars in shipping on your total budget. and of course I think they only sell inside the USA.

Look into AC instead of DC, better on-demand torque and more effective as boat motors.

>>1198505
Oh....k. So, what are the parameters of said boat that you're using DC batteries for propulsion? Solar? Wind? Your professors fuck machine?

>I trust this board a lot more.
No, you want to be spoonfed as opposed to being baffled by websites made by people who know more than a majority of this board combined.

Top five links are all sub $600, go be lazy elsewhere faggot.
>>
>>1198495
why reinvent the wheel OP?
you probably won't scratch build something more efficient than what you can buy off the shelf for less money
>>
>>1198505
>10hp at 36v=7457 watts/=207.14 amps/hour
>out of non deep cycle batteries
either gonna need a thousand pounds in batteries or have a 2 mile range. just use fucking gas.
>>
>>1198495
Inboard? Outboard?

Geared vs direct drive? Geared is easier to get high RPM motor to match a slower prop but more complex and expensive. Direct drive is simpler but you might have trouble matching a prop to anything other then a specialty motor.

My dad propels tiny lake boats exclusively with a trolling motor and big lead acid battery. More battery than your car has. Doesn't bother with gasoline and speed anymore.

Nothing quite like a Mini Kota to sail the lake in 20 Ibs of plywood.

Look for cheap used / wrecking forklift and/or forklift motors.

Look for golf cart/ milk float motors

A-are those, i-inches?

No such motors at that hp in 24vdc. Forklift motors are not 24vdc nor are golf carts. Those are in the triple digit voltages.

ITT: OP makes a kW boost converter.

Don't know but I have a similar fork motor that I can only just lift. They are not small. That one was just off google.

People have been known to put them in cars but they are not ideally timed plus most ev cars go for higher voltage mostly.

Just google "how to use google to find google links to electric motors i can put in my boat"
>>
>>1200881
Fucking series battery arrays. Imagine all the cell balancing that goes into a Tesla. I guess all that software is cheaper than putting 100x more windings in the motor(s), but still. How much do they go for anyway? I've got a long-term track EV I've been thinking about for a while.
>>
>>1200410
Welp I stand corrected golf carts do run at that hp and voltage.

But you need a whole pallet of batteries yuk yuk yuk
