>bought new boots because started machining job and wanted something good
>spend $200 on some Carolina's
>stupid me didn't get welted boots, they're cemented
>not even 9 months later I've completely worn through the heel on one and the other isn't far behind
>mfw I've had people tell me both that this is completely normal and that it's absurd and they should have lasted twice as long
So which is it? I had an old pair of boots I wore daily for nearly 4 years that didn't have near that much sole wear on them, it was everything else that was falling apart. I wasn't working full time but I'd say it was the equivalent of 1.5-2 years of my current activity at work. Am I really doomed to spend $60 a year on getting my boots resoled or is there some secret I haven't been told?
>>
I bought some no name steel toes from a temp agency and they lasted me 1 year in England and 2 years in a tropical environment afterwards.

After that I have been through various name brand work boots and none of them last longer than 4 months
>>

Sadly, lots of name brand boots are shit-tier these days. I wear Bates enforcer series for work. So far the tread has held up well, but the pleather on the top part has worn though. Had them for nearly four years but rotate through three pair.
I did have a problem with pronating (walking feet pointing out, that caused wear) An ortho prescribed me some inserts that helped correct that. (that and being aware of how I was walking). Now the wear not as bad.
The other thing is dragging your feet. That sands the tread off no matter how good the shoe. So make an effort not to drag your feet when you walk.
>>
If they keep your feet comfy who gives a fuck? Most people spend more than that on beer and coffee in 1 week
>>
>>1193165
There was a time when you would own 1 pair for most of your life and have it fix by a cobbler. They were also tailored to your foot; special-made. There was no breaking in period since they fit perfectly.

If you want something done right and you want the best there is, you may need to learn to cobble your own shoes instead of relying on mass produced shit for buyfags. Then post on /diy/ about it. Otherwise, gtfo "/diy/ - Do It Yourself".
>>
>>1193165
your employer should be paying for you boots.
>>
>>1193176
>If they keep your feet comfy who gives a fuck?
They don't, the sole has blown through so there's very little support.

>>1193178
They did for this pair. They're refusing to help with another since "It's not meant to be once a year" and they even added a limit for future purchases because mine were "so incredibly expensive".
>>
Go to your local shoe repair store and ask about work boots. They repair them, so they will know what brands have the most available parts, as well as which ones to get.
>>
>>1193165
You bought the boot equivalent of Bose. In other words, you are an idiot.

Cost doesn't mean shit. Marketing doesn't mean shit. Research, research, research. Talk to people that do what you do and see what they are wearing, how long they last and, most importantly, IF THEY ARE REPAIRABLE. Boots can last you a decade or more if you can replace the soles and service the leather. Find the old guy that repairs boots in your area and ask him "What boots should I buy if I want you to be able to keep them in good shape for years to come?"

Some generally rules:
If it is made in Asia then it is probably shit
If it has a bunch of plastic in it then it is probably shit
If it looks badass then it is probably shit
If you can't replace the soles easily then it is probably shit.
If it is light like a sneaker then it is probably not made for durability (not that that is always bad)
If it doesn;t have a warranty then it is probably shit.
>>
>>1193165
A shoe repair guy could build up your heels for not much.

Yearly resoling is fine too, your tread will be better and it will feel better.

You pay for the comfort of walking on rubber that is very soft and very grippy.

At least your not walking on hob nails or something.

>"It's not meant to be once a year"
yeah, you got a shit company. i get 300$ a year for reimbursible safety gear costs. this includes boots AND clothing.

get on to a better company m8
>>
>>1193237
I really do. I even have to buy my own earplugs.
>>
Skechers steel tool series is really good actually and they are reasonably priced.
>>
>>1193237
Fuck I hate unionfags, you get payed buy your own shit.
>>
>>1193165
>which is it?
both and neither.

gum rubber soles have good grip even on oily expanded metal, but they last less than a year.

rock hard soles last forever, but you fall on your ass every time it rains on the sidewalk.

personally i'll buy the high grip/short life soles every time. yolo, in the bad sense.

Hows taking up the ass working out for you?
>>
Wolverine shill here. Still not cheap but way more affordable and better quality than Carolina boots. Also a union fag so I keep stocking on good looking internal met-guard steel tool boot. Have a pair or old ones I used for yard work. A better pair for the actual work at the steel mill. And I new pair for the day's I don't work since they are good looking

Stop being a socialist!!
>>1193929
Perfectly fucking fine, I'm semi retired at 30, in a lower middle class lifestyle and my time is comprised of fly fishing, gardening and wasting the years away on this fucking place.
>>
>>1193165
I've got the nation's biggest safety footware manufacturer within 10 miles. They've got a discount store (which only locals know of) where defect products go. I pay 30-35 euros for a set of great boots, too bad if the soles wear within a year or something.

>>1193181
>"It's not meant to be once a year"
An actual company will give you a yearly budget for safety equipment. Should include boots, coveralls, gloves, helmets, etc, etc.
>>
>>1194088
The company really is shit. It's my first job in the field so I have to stay at least a year or two though.
>get paid 20% under market even for entry level
>literally no benefits at all
>bosses aren't just actual Jews but Russian Jews

I bought these Red Wings several years ago. I haven't done any hard work in them (they're what I wear with nice jeans to work) but if I did would I expect them to stand up to the wear and tear?
>>
>>1194305
No. They're not horrible but they're not work boots, hiking boots, nor boots fit for a ruck march.
>>
>>1194314

What's a good durable work boot? I'm about to be doing a fuckload of outdoor work potentially
>>
>>1194320
Just get some good work boots. If you want "okay but not perfect" then Danners or some shit.
>>
>>1194320
If you're in New Zealand or Australia get some John Bulls, they have refined blue collar no frills boots to a fuckin t.
