I've got this nasty floor in the upstairs of my house. I've really been neglecting it since I'm so disgusted by it.
Will I as a literal retard with no floor sanding experience have much trouble disposing of this with a floor sander from HD or lowes and getting a quality result?
Any tips on not fucking up?

No, that is not even finishing quality planks, when you smooth it, all the gaps and dings will show up, it is pointless, better just smooth it enough then put a real flooring cover on it, like vinyl panels etc

floor looks proper artist's studio comfy, imo - if the rooms fairly small, they probably painted it light color for that reason Your problem is maybe more your taste in everything else - few simple really good pieces of wood furniture, large plant, few lights, done. But I have no idea what you need to use the space for, obv.
that floor is fine. It's not great, but from that picture it's obvious your house is a cheap piece of shit.

Sanding a floor is a miserable thing to do. You have to make sure all the nails are beneath the sanding level, the dust and mess is only equalled to pulling a ceiling down and the its physically hard on your knees/legs.
Just put a floor on top. Easy and quick.

Hire a pro. Or sheet it and install some nice glue down vinyl plank.

Bingo. Fuck all that hassle, chemicals and dust.

Then just a short ladder to climb up to the new finish level

Best in thread !

Yup. If OP has enough cash for a sander and chemicals, then he has enough cash for some laminate or something.
