I'm making some containers for radioactive experiments.

I'm making some containers for radioactive experiments.
The one on the left is for uranium ore and experiments on caterpillars. The other for thorium nitrate and experiments with flies.

I need another for experiments with some plants... any ideas on the configuration? The radioactive material will be a mineral (torbernite).

please.
>>
Use tungsten carbide to line the outside of the container; inside as well
>>
>>1168282
Why?
>>
>>1168283
The radiation from the material will be reversed in on itself keeping it contained; but the tungsten must all ways stay in contact with it and stays attached to other tungsten carbide material
>>
>>1168282
where do you get that stuff cheap? i guess you could ask a machine shop for a box of their used inserts for scrap price.

lead sheets are sometimes used for roof vents and flashing - should be cheap from a home center
>>
>>1168275
Will the torbernite be in powder form? You may need to simply mix it with the plant's growing medium. Are you taking into account mycorrhizae if the medium is soil-based and not sterilized?

>>1168278
>reporting to the fbi for stuff you can legally buy
>>
>>1168298
>>1168282
>>1168297
I think you are grossly overestimating the amount of radioactivity this stuff has.
>>
>>1168300
Nope; general PPE for radiation is required then provide a testing environment that resist radiation. You are not performing fusion or fusion.

In biology radiation alters DNA upon direct or indirect contact; so by using lead or tungsten carbide and radiation resistant PPE you can therefore experiment with radiation
>>
>>1168306
Fusion or fission*
>>
>>1168300
I don't think so. The uraninite has 45 mRad/h and the torbernite 60.

Anyway, about tungsten carbide, i knew that it simply stops radiation.
>>
>>1168278
>2% thoriated tungsten for TIG wleders is sold over the counter to minors.
>smoke detectors in every home use americium-241
>>
>nuclear experiments on caterpillars, plants and flies
>>
>As torbernite is radioactive and outgases radon (222Rn), collectors are urged to take proper precautions in the handling and storage of any specimens.

Consider all isotopes in the decay chain
>>
>>1168619
I think radon will agevolate the contamination of the insects or plants.
>>
>>1168619
>>1168644
>not working with radon in an enclosed chamber and with gloves
>breathing in radon
enjoy your eventual lead poisoning

The containers will keep alone, far away from me and at open air.
>>
>>1168275
I don't condone animal abuse. Please go away and keep your shitposting to other boards thanks, sage.
>>
>>1168275
Grow a pretri dish of something easy to get like S. aureus and mutate it then see if you can create antibiotic resistances in it
>>
>>1168667
Yeah, and you are vegan, i suppose.

and I can buy a gun from Walmart, doesn't mean using it illegally
>>
>>1168278
We passed around uranium ore in class. Its not a great idea to eat it. But seriously. Thats about it.

If you put it underwater you can block the radiation, it may become a little bulky tthough
>>
>>1168275
How do you plan on measure your radioactivity?

Haha, should have guessed.
So, this is mainly an art project and you're not actually expecting mutant bugs or plants?
>>
>>1168275
Depends on how much shielding you want. Also depends on what type of radiation you are dealing with.

You can design something similar to nuclear reactors on subs. Use different layers in combination to reduce the overall radiation.

You can use 2" of concrete to stop all alpha and beta radiation. Gamma radiation will be reduced and as long as you remember: time, distance, shielding.

Spend as little time near the radiation. Put the radiation as far away as possible. Shielding when you do interact.
>>
>>1169250
No, it's for real.
>>
>>1168275
>for experiments
Care to expand on what kinds of?

If you are looking for mutagenic aspects you might use UV or chemicals.
>>
>>1169484

20 years from now I will be huddled in an underground cave telling the younglings about the day I witnessed the creation of our bug Overlords
>>
>>1173065
So what exactly is your intended outcome you silly guido fuck..?
>>
>>1173114
Genetic mutation.
>>
>>1173123
Considering the usual doses used in mutation breeding exceed your achievable doses by many orders of magnitude, I kinda suspect you won't see anything interesting.
>>
>>1173125
Yes, probably.
Do you know the dose used in radiation breeding?
I never found anything on that.
>>
>>1173129
Oh, I dunno, prolly pretty fucking low considering ionising radiation breaks down the base pairs in DNA sequences.
> I never found anything on that.
Ya don't fucking say? It's almost like everyone knows and agrees that it's just a stupid idea.

The ball warmer was funny, this is just bullshit for the sake of being edgy. Fuck off.
>>
>>1173129
The total doses seem to range from several grays to hundreds of grays.
Your 60mrad/h source would need about two months for just 1Gy dose.

But is also truth that the radiation intensity is inversely proportional to the square of the distance from the source.
Usually atomic gardens are hundreds of meters in radius, in my case only few centimeters.

Anyway, we'll see.
>>
>>1173200
The inverse square law isn't working for your benefit here, though. The indicated doses are for the irradiated plants and seeds, while yours is apparently what a radiation meter reads when put in contact with the source.
I also suspect that the way your geiger counter converts counts to doses isn't very realistic in your case.

But yeah, time shows.
