I decided to forge my own ring instead of purchasing one.
I carved out a wax ring, casted it in plaster of paris to form a mold, and then poured some molten misc. jewelry into the form.
After quite some time I think it cleaned up nicely.

>Not bad, OP, I'm getting married soon and want to make my own ring.

Years ago I got my hands on an old silver dime and used the technique where you punch a tiny hole in the center and then spend countless hours tapping it with a spoon to create a beautiful silver ring.

I proudly gave it to my girlfriend and explained how I made it. I swear to god the expression on her face and her subsequent lack of interest in wearing it were simply "HE SPENT A FUCKING DIME ON A RING."
>>
looks like you used a slice of cow bone as your model and then attacked it with a file because it turned out bad.

Don't. This here >>1153122 is going to happen 99% of the time.

I carved my girlfriend a Jade amulet with silver inlay for her birthday, which turned out magnificent and better than I ever hoped it to become.
I also gave it to her in a box with handmade veneer which spelled her name.

She thanked me and everything but when I gave her some random jewelery a year later the reaction was 10 times more grateful.
Really disappointed me.

That's not entirely true. If you make jewelry and sell it, then the women who it is bought for will appreciate it... not in any way that has any meaning to you of course, but she'll appreciate it more than if the person who bought it for her had made it for her themselves.

I am so glad i have a wife who would rather i spend my time making her something then money buying her something.

I made her a jewelry box 15 years ago for our wedding. Yes i could have gone to the store and bought one that looked better but would ware out in a few years.

Instead i spent like $50 in materials and more hours then i can remember in the garage making it. lots of wood inlay using contrasting colors of wood. and special attention payed to the facing of the grain of the wood.

I would post pics but im a paranoid nut job and dont want people scouring the internet to find that box in the reflection of a mirror that is reflecting off a window in a pic she has on facebook then get robbed.

Also made her a "special toy" on my wood lathe one year around her birthday as a joke... then found it in "the drawer" when i was helping with the laundry.

I'm happy for you man, you're lucky. Far too many people, both men and women tie jewelry's worth to the amount of money spent on it, and when the effort you've put into something is spurned for something bought from a shop you get cynical.
>>
>>1153805
That actually looks pretty good, OP. Interested in if it's "real" jewelry, or if it'll just turn your finger green after a day or two, but I like it.

I know coal with a blower will do it, and I'm 99% sure charcoal with a blower will. Can be cheap briquettes and your gfs hair dryer, if that makes it easier.

What do you mean by "basic fire"?
You'll probably run into problems with wood, but cheap charcoal with a blower(e.g. hairdryer) will work just fine.
Search around on youtube for people building mini diy forges.
If it gets steel glowing hot, it'll also melt brass.

Going for a more liquid ratio for the plaster so the cure picks up maximum detail.
After the plaster solidifies pour off the excess water. I cure first with a microwave to seperate from plastic container and to remove wax then bake in a normal kitchen oven.
The top tupperware container was my ring cast the lower container was a shell to contain heat when melting. I lack a proper furnace so I have to create a new shell every other melt. Plaster of paris has low durability and therfore low reusability.

I wish I could afford the amount of argon needed for that.
And no, getting it hotter will not help with the oxidation and TiN formation.
Your oxy torch is gonna fuck you over bigtime.

>Using Ti for a cock-ring
This is more retarded than anything mentioned above.
Ti has none of the properties you would want in a good cock-ring.
It's light, harder to cut with normal shear tools, and harder to get a clean precise cut (i.e. not halfway into your dick) with abrasive tools when you do get it stuck.

If you're casting in clay do you plan to use sand or plaster. I only ask because clay is not going to melt out of the mold so how do you plan on removing your investment.?
>>
>>1155942
Since it's such a simple ring, ill do a half mold and just press it into more clay, then pull it out

For rings with depth like signet rings, ill do two halves pressed together and buffered by baby powder so they dont stick together. It's more or less how colonists make candlesticks ifbi understand correctly

The melting bit is interesting, did you add flux? If so, how much? I can only ever see "add some flux" with no real quantities mentioned

OPs ring looks good to me, but fuck what I think, I'm not the one wearing it.

Here's a bent wood ring my wife made me for our 11year aniversery. It has many flaws but I love it anyways. Funny thing is I carved her a ring from maple as a gift also.
I'm sanding down the sides to fit my finger better. This is where things get odd to me. She said she will sand it to fit for me, but that's a job better left for me because it's my finger. I'll just keep sanding till it fits. And she Refuses to sand her ring to make it fit better, saying "I shouldn't have to work on my gift"
It fits, mind you, it's just not perfect. So she doesn't wear it....
I'll post a picture later.

Made a 4chan amulet so I can be the next CWC.

Beautiful! I would like to get into chainmail myself. I currently work with wire (started like a month ago I'm still not very good) but chainmail pendants like this are so beautiful. Do you have any tips for someone that wants to start?

Nice job OP .. looking very good!

Neat. I'm also in a bench jewelry course and that looks like something someone in the class would make.

Every ring size and aspect ratio has a number of ideal weaves or structures that only work with that exact size. Spend some time finding those and you'll come up with unique new designs. Don't fall into the rut of Euro 4-1, Half Persian 3, and Byzantine as your only weaves.

It's like any other art or science. Learn the basics then start experimenting.

Check out the weaves library at mailleartisans.org to get started.

lol at the amount of people in this thread who made jewelry that their wives didn't like.

it's not that they don't appreciate your efforts, it's that you made them something ugly.
>>
>>1155333
it has to do with how people perceive value in things

in thier mind hand making something and spending less money means that you didn't want to go the extra mile and buy them something expensive and they fail to realize how much work goes into these things

blame consumerism

I just made a wax model. Now I'm short of plaster, can I use cement to cast my copper/ iron in it or will it be too rough?

I plan on getting some Au-Solution to make it golden (reddish-gold just looks so nice).

Just found out that none of my available materials will survive 2000°C+ temperatures.

Thinking about forging instead of casting now.

Concrete will pretty much explode under heat. Yar dicked. Find fine bentonite gel (clay) and window screen sift sand and maybe add little water or dry it out depending on shit.

Or make oil bonded.

Youtube green sand casting or T least buy small amount of casting ceramic. Do same as plaster
>>
>>1153149

Pics of said amulet? Always wanted to get into gem crafting since I get a lot of gems and gold for free.

No shit. Either bitch is shallow, doesnt love u, or she really does like it bit you overestimate how much she should.

Like christmas every year. Try not to over do it but give them the best i can.
Also, either feel bad if i get obvious shitty gifts because family members are poor or feel like ahit because i dont deserve what i got...

Inherited or???

Hell. Gonna hobby jewel craft myself. Made a few foundries and fully plan on getting a hobby tier $700 setup for casting silver and shit.

If a jewelry box take more that 5 hours from stat to finish not counting drying time on the stain/finish. And congrats on paying attention to the grain, I judge wood working made by literal third graders every summer and they have it figured out.

Please show the box, no one on /diy/ is going to hunt you down for it.
>>
>>1158729

As autistic as it sounds, I spend almost every weekend in the warmer months sluicing for gold. I have collected and fair bit of fine gold and raw gems over the years but I can't bring myself to sell any because I pulled it out of the ground and that makes it worth more than market price to me.
>>
>>1155333

Because you people overvalue your own work.

While it's great that you put the effort in, most people are making shitty nonsense like OP because in reality mass production makes much nicer looking, higher quality pieces most of the time.
>>
I know a woman who makes really basic mens bangles and cufflinks, must cost her about £10/$13 max per item, and she sells them for about £100+

Honestly, if you think the stuff you make is only worth about a dollar, add a couple of zeros and people will think its priced like that for a reason. People want to pay for jewelry, they don't want a good deal.
>>
>>1158774
Anyone have recommendations for a guide on how to learn how to do this kind of stuff for an absolute beginner?

Being able to craft something at home and sell it for a profit would be a dream for me. I'm not cut out for formal employment, and it would get my parents off my back about being NEET and not contributing even if I could just make a tiny bit of money.
>>
>>1158724

Checked some tutorials. Looks like it's pretty doable.

Do you happen to know a smart way to melt copper or maybe even iron?
I have access to a welding device, however this would be highly improvised and maybe even dangerous. My favourite alternative would be a blowpipe. If it weren't so damn expensive.
>>
>>1158744
While I agree that op's picture doesn't look that good, after more work he obtained a very nice looking ring. If we're talking about jewellery, most of the mass produced stuff is overpriced, even more than most ooak stuff you can buy from an artisan. I agree that sometimes, if you're not willing to put in the time it takes to actually learn something, mass produced stuff looks more polished, but anyone with an eye for details can obtain excellent results after enough tries.
I usually only take the time to make a gift if the person that will receive it said they like my work, or if they make stuff themselves because I know they know how much time it takes.

One example is those awful the beauty and the beast dolls. Mass produced, ugly as sin, and when someone takes the time to re-do a faceup they can actually look decent, and even good. It's not an exception either, plenty of mass produced "collectors edition" dolls are ugly or badly painted. The best dolls I've seen are those made by hand by someone, usually one of a kind or in limited quantities
>>
>>1159035

Build whatever the fuck you want, but stop pretending like the fact you did It personally makes your booger-ring any more valuable than a ring made by Chinese slaves and industrial machinery. You can cherry pick examples of poor factory made stuff all day long, but You would have to work hard to buy something as shitty as this ring. I hate this Reddit level sjw affirmation nonsense. It's not good, he needs to work on it.
>>
>>1159159
You sound angry. No one said his ring is perfect, me and other posters just said that you can get very good results with enough time. You should try handcrafting something, instead of using your hands to type angry posts.

It might be a while until they ship for people that weren't part of the initial crowd sourcing, but the ONO 3d printer is a resin&light printer for around $100 that has a castable resin formula so you don't need to butcher wax like op

Have pics from the process if anyone wants to see them.

Is Jewelry really that hard to make? I want to make my wedding ring too, considering how much diamond companies are making off people who just want to get married. I don't want the girl to be disappointed about not getting a nice ring though.

Thankfully, I'm a chemist and I'm fairly confident I can just study diamond synthesis. The problem are all the other parts. Is cutting the diamond really hard? If I buy precious metals, how do I shape it to a ring?

>Is Jewelry really that hard to make?
You won't be making anything you want to give to someone on your first attempt, I can tell you that much. Especially not something as important as a wedding ring.

If you think you'll enjoy it try it as a hobby, but you're not gonna make it if your only goal is to create one good thing.
>>
>>1160492

oh I mean i have a 6ga prince albert piercing already. its incredibly hard to find irregular length piercing hardware in large gauges. conventional 16mm bars are for cocklets and rings have too large a diameter to fit while still being able to roll my foreskin back up. its really annoying.

so i want to combine something like horse shoe circular bar with a straight bar sticking out through the centre. this way i get a ball on the top and bottom without needing to pierce it again and just get a Apadravya piercing. so i should get all the benefits of a PA and a dydoe in the one piece. difficulty will be in finding a drill press that can hold precision bits with minimal runout.

anyone know of a good drill press that's fairly precise? I've seen some pearl drilling rigs on aliexpress.

the fuel source can be just wood sure. but the most important things are forced air. you can use a shop vac to blow air on it. and insulation. clay mixed with fire place ash does a nice job. lot of air and lots of insulation are how you can get up to temp and stay there on the cheap. and use borax for flux to get the slag to clump.
