I have a Boss 660 drum machine with an LCD, non-backlight display.

I know people have backlit other screens like the Gameboy, maybe you could just follow one of those on your drum machine.

I suppose that's a proprietary screen as opposed to a generic dot-matrix? I'd do it with an electroluminescent panel behind the LCD, but that might require tearing up the LCD itself a little. LCDs usually have some sort of backing, and removing it might have a negative effect on the functionality of the screen. Try putting a few LEDs (orange?) above the LCD's glass layers. But it would help if you posted a picture of the other side of the LCD.
