generally, railroad spikes are not knife-quality steel.
they are low-carbon (even the "high-carbon" ones are specified by law to be a maximum of 0.3% carbon). They're specifically made as such so they fail by deformation bending, not breaking.
I dont know any data on japanese ones - IF japan even uses RR spikes - they might, like the UK, use a knuckle fixing. , but I expect they are the same, low carbon steels for the same application.
