Get a light detector inside the closet so that when there's light hitting after you open the closet door it it turns the light on.

They sell all in one lights, battery powered you just place them in your closet and they light up when they sense motion.

I do them with 12v led strips, 12v PIR sensor and a wall wart with enough amps.

This. Just buy a reed switch that opens when a magnetic field is applied and stick a magnet on the door. Its really simple
