sup /diy/, I've been having some electrical issues at home.

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

sup /diy/,

I've been having some electrical issues at home.

The other day my earth leakage fuse was tripping even with all the other switches turned off.

The problem seems to have fixed itself now, but it was happening during heavy rain and so I expect the problem will come up again some time.

Is there a method I can use to test individual circuits in my house's circuit board to isolate the problem?

get an electrician. if you're asking this question you dont want to be playing with live wiring. its probably exposed wiring so when water gets on it, it shorts.

electricians have fancy tools like insulated screwdrivers, boots and multimeters that are expensive.

I have all these tools and I'm not paying a loltrician ridiculous prices to tell me something I can figure out on my own.

I will take the risk, I just need to know how I can isolate the offending circuit.
>>
seems your main power line isnt properly isolated.

get an electrician.

>get an electrician.
Wow, if I knew this board was populated with loltricians I wouldn't have bothered asking.

Go fuck yourselves you Jew bastards.

I dont believe you. just because theres no reason for someone to own a properly insulated multimeter unless they work with mains voltage. electricians ladders are even made of fibreglass instead of metal.

look for a poorly sealed junction box in the attic or somewhere external. it's also possible that the grounding rod isnt installed properly so you always have leakage until the ground gets wet and it trips. you dont have tools to check a grounding rod.

I'm not an electrician. but i repair electrical and electronic shit. I have a 10$ multimeter in my car and a 50$ multimeter that i use for probe testing circuits im repairing. but a real multimeter for working on mains voltage without dying costs much more. they have special probes and housing so you wont die.

right now you have a very serious problem with the safety mechanism in your wiring that essentially stops you from dying if you touch a metal appliance that has a loose live wire touching the chassis.

you're just going to end up jigging some shit together and might not solve the actual problem. in a system that's meant to stop you from dying.

>in b4 he posts pictures of his meme tools from harbour freight

>>1137620
whatever bro, if it happens again I'll just short the earth leakage fuse and it will be your fault if I die for not giving me good advice.
>>
>>1137622
I look forward to reading about it. then more people will hire an electrician instead of trying to fix it themselves.

look out for a glowing copper rod and or melted water pipes around your house.

>>1137618
You're retarded.

T. Highschool Dropout who learned how to connect two wires with electrical tape.
>>
>>1137627
yeah i was just kidding. it would just trip another breaker or leave every grounded device hanging live or start an electrical fire. then you'd easily be able to tell where the electrical fault was.
>>
>>1137608
If it trips with all other breakers turned off that means the neutral conductor is connected to earth, in you case via water/humidity. Problem is that it might be anywhere in your house.

This thread is shit and full of pleb.

>electricians have insulated screwdrivers, and fiberglass ladders and bla...
just lol

Electricians have knowledge

That's why you hire them

Otherwise:
OP, learn how an AC circuit works.
Then learn how earthing systems work.
Then learn how RCDs work.

Its not impossible to learn that

But if you don't you are a majestic smartass faggot even if you manage to fix the problem
>>
It's probably in a haphazard jbox somebody set thinking they would be able to escape the electrical Jew. Unfortunately you can't, have fun crawling around your attic and opening every device.

>my earth leakage fuse
wtf is that?

Regardless of whether or not I enjoy strangers hurting themselves, (I do though,) I'll see if I can help. First I'd check for rainwater leaks, specifically near metal pipes or other grounded things. If water is able to connect a loose live wire to some copper gutter-pipe, then you could have a short to ground, but whether this would go through the breaker is doubtful, so it's probably shorting to a ground wire instead, which is probably more dangerous unless you're taking a shower with copper plumbing. Secondly I'd check ground continuity by jamming one multimeter into the ground socket and holding the other onto a metal tap. Normally this will show low integer resistance, hopefully 1Ω or less. Do this all around your house if you get a good value the first time, check to see if any ground wires are seperate from others. I'd also suggest testing the voltage between ground and neutral and ground and a tap a few times before that too, especially if the ground could be live. If you can't test the continuity between ground and a tap, testing the voltage between live and ground should also do it, assuming the 1MΩ-10MΩ input impedance is enough to not trip the earth leakage breaker. I really don't know what I'm talking about, so have fun electrocuting yourself.

My guess is he translated it directly from his language, in my country they cal it earth-leak-switch so ...

> test individual circuits

It's not in the circuits then is it? That would mean that there is a leak from the incoming powerline after your RCD up untill the first breaker/fuse in-ports.Could be a wire coming from the RCD that has a broken insulation and is touching a metal part somewhere.

Your RCD could also just be broken. Try a new one if it isn't too old.

Ask neighbours if they have the same problem, just to make sure you're not looking for a squirrel in the sea.
