Need some help..
I am installing a ceiling fan.
I removed the old electrical box. I attempted to install a joist brace to hold the weight of the fan, but the hole in the ceiling is right next to a stud/joist, preventing me from using it. I would move the hole over, but there are 2x2s in each corner, and this brace wont work with the 2x2 there.
Id just nail the box/mount into the stud, but i dont think i can secure the electrical box/mount on just one side, doesn't seem safe, but i'm not a carpenter or electrician.
Any help will be appreciated.

thats exactly what I had.

the problem is, each end of that brace, is about 3" tall. so whatever its pressing into, needs to be at least 3" tall. My issue, is that there is a 1x1 or 2x2 piece of wood in the corner where the sheetrock and plywood meet, not allowing the brace's teeth to grab onto the wood, it doesn't touch anything.

but this is exactly what I need.

Thanks for the response though.

That works, but the fan's weight is now just on one side of the box. I simply moved my fan a few inches over and ran bolts straight into the 2x4.
Yes, there was a hole. So I picked up a ceiling medallion for 3$ or so at the hardware store.

>where the sheetrock and plywood meet

Looks like your joist is one of these pic related. You will have to cut a block of wood to fill in the space between the 1x1 joist sides. Cut it to fill the space vertically and the max width you can stuff up through the hole in the sheetrock and afix to the joist plywood with construction adhesive. This will give the fan brace something to bite into.

Consider enlarging the hole in the sheetrock so you can reach into the space to do some work. You might have to reach in and glue a block against the next joist over as well. Also, this will give you an opportunity to move the hole a few inches away from the joist for clearance for the bracket.

What about something like this? You use some pan head self tappers to mount a box to them and set the spacing. The ends can be bent to set depth.
