I have a CB radio. Pic related -- it's the radio.
Unfortunately, it seems that it needs a vehicle mount. Is there a way to set this up so I can use it on foot, in the woods, etc. or am I an idiot for getting this thing?

All its should need is 12 volts DC. Make sure you have the battery capacity to run it for the length of time you need it.

And a suitable antenna

Put the battery in a backpack run the wire out to the pouch you carry the radio, order on Amazon after you connect the dots
In my experience CB radios and antennas designed to be in vehicles don't work well without a suitable ground plane. Without the metal body of the car to reflect the signal the range is piss poor. This is the same reason they don't work well in fiberglass boats. You're better off buying a handheld unit. They can be found cheap. or there may be an antenna type that can at least partially compensate.

That is unfortunate but also good to hear. At least I didn't go out and waste more money on a way to adapt it. Is there anything I could make out of this thing, or should I get rid of it?

just get a handheld
usually no more than $60
or used one

27mhz handhelds are pretty poor with stock antennas.
V/Uhf is where its at for handhelds.

You don't say who you are expecting to talk to. I use a CB on long trips to listen to truckers. It's better than a radar or lidar detector. I don't even plug in the microphone though I keep it in my truck. CBs are great disaster prep items because there are plenty of them. I'll never be without one.

CB bands are trash, have you looked in to the Amature Radio Community? If running around the wilderness with a CB appeals then you might enjoy climbing a mountain and talking to Europe or Australia on a decent frequency and or radio. Leave the CBs to the idiot truckies.

BaoMeme radios don't operate on CB frequencies.

That may be the case in your country.
