>(CNN) - An Arkansas mother says she used YouTube tutorials to build her family home.
>Now, the two-time divorced mom of four has written a book about the experience.
>It's called Rise: How a House Built a Family.
>The story chronicles the life of Cara Brookins, her children and their mission to build a 3,500 square foot home in nine months. The family managed to pull off the feat with just $130,000.
>The book comes out Jan. 24.
Buuuuuu, Anon, you'll never be able to build your own home!!!!
Fuck boys on this board butthurt as fuck.

Sorry, forgot. Discuss building your own home, again.

Thats 3 years of an average wage, before taxes, room and board, food, and other bills and debts.
You gonna live at home for a decade to save up, when you could have just gotten a loan and paid most of the house off by then?
>130,000$
JESUS CHRIST
I live in Arkansas and you can just BUY a home with that shit
>>1115506
>3 years of an average wage
HAHAHAAHAAAAAAA
That's like 6 years of average wages in Arkansas and if you SOMEHOW manage to save 25% of everything you earn that's TWENTY FOUR YEARS of savings!!!
I call bullshit on the ENTIRE thing.
I'm thinking about laying a huge concrete slab and digging out a home underneath it because Satan will ice skate to work before I manage to save up that much money.
>>1115512
sounds kind of more expensive than building a small house actually anon.
>>1115510
>3,500 square foot
?
>>1115350
>$130k to build a home
>in buttfuck nowhere arkansas
lmao women
>>1115513
Not really.
Tons of living space and savings on electricity. Its the way to go.
I just can't figure out how I could /diy/ that much concrete, so I'd have to pay a contractor.
But I could dig it out myself, bucket by bucket and dump the earth on top of the concrete.

Dumped a 4000 sf place in Springdale AR for 275k in 2009. New construction... total housing glut there.
A family of 5 does not need a 3500 sf house... that's the part I'd call bs on.

>A family of 5 does not need a 3500 sf house... that's the part I'd call bs on.
>The house has five bedrooms and a library.
Mother of four children - all were at home.
Bedroom for each plus a library for her - she is a writer.
a house made with pocket screws?
no thanks
>youtube does not provide certification for working on gas or electrical
>good luck with insurance when it burns down or explodes
>>1115512
Prolly pretty easy for her when she's raking in 2X spousal and child support payments.
>>1115572
Minus the kid with the extra chromosome, I don't think any of these things sleep alone.

I didn't say that. My grandfather built his own home because he had bought a carpentry book from Sears and (more importantly) adhered to the things listed in the "best practices" and "construction standards" (ie not drilling pipes through supporting beams) section.
Building a home isn't easy but it can be done if you're not a retard. However, notice how most people are retards.

Dunno. The $40,000 metal plate in my foot says don't forget PPE. fell 8 feet and landed on my feet. Then I was off of them over 1 year laid up. Fuck ever being off the ground.
>>1115510
I bought 1 in KS rent to own for 10 grand and no interest. And the one next door for 21.
Man I live in a fucking shithole tho. ;(
>>1115512
Concrete will cost your ass. Do like my buddy grandpa did. Dig trenches for walls, poor slab on top and walls, dig out with skid loader, water pump and car wash. Lay concrete floor and there u go.
>>1115560
It's insane how much that shit will take. It will take u years by hand.
>>1115890
wat?

That's my aunt's house. She died some years ago and left it to her children.
When she lived there it was two or three bedrooms (can't really remember) and one bath.
It says Benton but the zip is for Bauxite. I'll ask her grand-daughter about it. She works for the Bauxite Post Office.

>The family managed to pull off the feat with just $130,000
That's 2-3 houses around here...
>>1115970
I believe he means
>dig three trenches to form a three sides box
>fill with concrete
>dig the soil out of the box
>pour in concrete to make a floor
>add fourth side and roof
>turn buried concrete box into a home
Personally, I would recommend buying a cheap plot of land and building a pole barn on it. Buy a shity camper and "store" it in your pole barn. It's a hell of a lot cheaper than the house is the OP, and significantly less stupid than this idea.
>>1115800
/b/ Plz go.
>>1115350
I beg to differ. Kys
>>1115560
>But I could dig it out myself, bucket by bucket and dump the earth on top of the concrete.
My 23ton excavator was 6500€. And it's very good to have something like that on a build site. And it diagram a hole like that in no time. Machine can be sold for the same amount when you are finished.
ITT: people who have no idea how to do construction
lmao. illiterate beaners become experts at this shit in 2 weeks.
>>1115350
>3,500 square foot home
Remind me how this is measured?
How would /diy/ recommend a complete novice build their home?
I was thinking, buy land, dig big hole home, get cinder blocks, line outside of hole with cinder blocks upwards to 6', line blocks with wood and insulation, done.
>>1116675
Sounds perfect. I don't think that plan can be improved on.
You don't need us! Go follow your dreams!
>>1115793
Agreed.
I would have done all the electrical for free if i had her to fuck ever night ofthe job.
>>1116658
Length x width of every finished above ground room with a ceiling height over 7ft. AKA the livable space
>with just $130,000
wew.
>>1116697
That's what I thought, but for some reason my mind was telling me only the ground floor, which made me think that the house was absolutely massive.
