So it hasn't arrived yet but I have been told that I am getting a lathe for christmas (it's still on it's way).

I have a wood shop but I usually make bows and arrows and have no idea what to make with a lathe.

I am hoping you guys can tell me about some of your projects!

My friend makes a lot of tool handles and uses them to make legs and stuff for furniture

Those things are scary.
>>

Furniture would be fun. I think I might wanna start with cups and bowls.

I could do some really cool designs on them with my laser engraver too.
>>
>>1109390
only if you stick your hands and shit into the spinny bits just make sure you never get TOO comfortable working around things that can fuck you up.
>>
>>1109392
you can sell nice furniture too, almost all of my friends play money comes from his woodwork he puts stuff in consignment shops and goes to flea markets and sometimes makes an extra grand or so a month off it
>>
>>1109393
I find this to be true with any tool. If its designed to hog away wood or metal then at all times it pays to understand that your flesh and bone will pose no obstacle.
>>
I'm a wet shaver and a lot of people make shave brush handles on their lathes. They are easy to make and would offer great practice for someone looking to learn.

Make chess figures.

Not knowing how familiar you are with lathe operation.
Rough in the wood before turning (i.e. if you are turning something like a 4x4, knock the edges off on the table saw first.. Makes it a lot easier to turn your first baseball bat. :)

The only other thing I vividly remember from wood shop (high-school/college) was how to hold the tools and position the rest so they didn't get ripped from your grip and flung across the room.

Used to make fancy bowels by combining different woods then turning.

Ive made a chess set, bowls, pen ( every one does , they are over rated) , drum sticks, handels for tools, bottle openers, table legs, baseball bats, pool ques , tooth picks.
>>

I'd have thought you could make very reproducible arrows on a lathe?

With an engineers lathe, or perhaps with additional fittings on your lathe, you could also turn aluminium arrows.

Here's where you tell me you specialise in making carbon fibre shafts..

Lathe for bowls and vases. Also legs for furniture. You can rig up a jig thing that will allow you to make templates and copy so all your shit matches.

Look at youtube there are channels for this. I saw a kid making Christmas ornaments and chess sets on one once.

>combining different woods then turning.

This. Get multiple wood and glue them together into a block. Let it cure and then lathe it. You get nice colors.

why are woodfuckers retarded

I've got the Mastercraft version of this hobby lathe, I used it to make my gf a Harry Potter inspired wand for Christmas. You are going to want to order the drill chuck and clamps for the faceplate. Mine didn't come with them and they can be a pain in the rear to find the right ones.

Not that guy.
Wood, yeah definitely.
I mean the ones I make are basically lathed.
Figured aluminum shafts were extruded or something, considering a weld or whatever along the shaft would throw the weight all hinky

First thing I ever turned in High School was a poplar butt plug. Pretty sure the teacher knew and everyone in the class had a chuckle.

For clarification, I didn't use it. I only use glass butt plugs.

Knowledge dump inbound.

THE ABSOLUTE MOST IMPORTANT THING is to keep your tools sharp. Carbide tools are for pussies, HSS is the way to go.

Get a low speed bench grinder (1750 RPM) , 120 grit aluminium oxide disc on one side, buffing wheel with 15000 grit honing compound on the other. You cannot freehand sharpen to any acceptable degree of precision, pick up a wolverine sharpening jig and the various bits and accessories for the tools you have. Grind the bevel, remove the burr with 440 sandpaper, then polish on the wheel.

The drive center and live center that come with the lathe are always shit, no matter the brand, replace them as soon as possible. Make sure the spike on your replacement drive center is spring loaded, the solid ones will split the fuck out of hard wood.

You can actually get by with the live center for a while usually, the problem is that they use shitty bearings with shitty grease, so they will fail after a few months. The faceplate of the live center is also friction fit to the bearing, so when you want to tap the center bit off, either the faceplate will come off (really fucking annoying) or the morse taper will give (desired result)

Don't get into turning bowls until you have gotten at least somewhat familiar with turning wood between centers, turning bowls is hard as shit.

Also, you'll need a bandsaw to cut square bowl blanks into roundish bowl blanks, unless you want to rough the blank for literally half an hour with multiple sharpening breaks (you do not)

That's really the quick and dirty of it, the best way to learn is to keep your goddamn tools sharp and to just do it. You will have questions along the way, and most of those you can either solve or easily have answered.

Get some sort of flexible pad to hold your sandpaper unless you like burned hands, finish the wood with linseed or tung oil to start out, both of those, especially linseed, are basically impossible to mess up.

Feel free to ask if you have questions.
