I have some "soft" iron.
Whats the easiest way to turn it into iron fillings?

File it
filing isnt easy unless you have an electric rotary stone file like this.
You go to your nearest auto mechanic and pay him for his brake pad shavings.
With any luck he'll have a few gallons worth.

>filing isnt easy
what the fuck am I reading?
its one of the simplest processes with a hand tool.
take metal, clamp in vice. take file Bastard warding or flat would be best. put file on metal.
push forward. lift, pull back. push forward. repeat.
its hardly rocket science.
how the fuck can you find that difficult?

>brake pad shavings
I think he meant rotor shavings, and yes, they will have quite a bit but they'll be nasty.
Find a welding shop. They'll have shavings from fresh pieces that won't be as grimy as brake rotor shavings.
Ive been saving up to buy a medium sized hobby mill for a while
Ive been thinking about this. I see people milling blocks of aluminum throwing chips. After a while some of these guys have to have pounds of aluminum sitting around as chips and shavings
Do they just get thrown away?
Can you do the whole small forge and make ingots with them?

I think you misunderstood him. Filing is easy. Filing down a lot of metal for powder would eventually start to hurt.
You're all misunderstanding, OP doesn't want filings, he wants fillings. DIY dentistry :)

Nah. The milled aluminum chips take on abnormal characteristics and won't cast proper.

it took me about ~12 hours of hard labor for 1oz of metal powder

Buy a sharp file. Don't press on the pull stroke.

>easiest way
A ball mill
>set it and forget it !
> Buy a sharp file. Don't press on the pull stroke.
a sharp knife requires less force, but a sharp file grabs better and requires more exertion.

And removes more material
