I want to make a doorway in that wall, can you all give me some suggestions?

My current plan is to stick in a steel lintel and just bust everything below it so I can start digging into the dirt behind it
>>
>>1101902
RIP in piece OP
>>
>>1101902
You are going to have to shore up the structure that is currently resting on this wall section. Next, excavate on the outside to relieve pressure on the wall. Cut hole in wall wide enough to put in footings and columns to support lintel.
>>
>>1101902
Suggestion: hire someone
>>
Theres probably a portal to hell back there. I wouldn't do it.
>>
>>1101902
>give me some suggestions?
Livestream It - can have a /diy/ sweepstake, how many blows it will take till you disappear under a pile of rubble (none too many, be my guess).
>>
>>1101902
If it is not a load bearing wall it will be easier.

As other anon said. You excavate the out side. Then if non load bearing use a cut off saw and make your cuts. Or use an sds hammer drill.

Once you cut a sectiom large edouch for your lental plate to fit. With a piece of cribbing ( cribbing should be smaller than the final opening by the same amount as the jack studs or columns you will put in. )

Drill /cut out a center section big enough to fit a post or floor jack.

Use the jack to take the load.

Cut / drill out the rest of the doorway.

Install jack studs or columns or what jave you up to the lental. Remove the temp post and cribbing.

Heres a outside view, I don't feel like the backwall is load bearing since its thin compared to the side walls, so shouldn't I be good to go in busting a hole in it?

I just want to start building a underground home using mining techniques and maybe find the coal seam in the hillside behind this 80 year old smokehouse.

And this is located in West Virginia

>>1101902
Here's what you do, I've done this:

If the stone can hold up to a hammer drill and the wall will FOR SURE stay a cohesive wall, you install a structural sTeel doorway.
You'll first get angle steel, ideally 1/4" 4x4, with 10 5/8" holes punched in one side. I'd say for an 8' door you want the first at 3" from top then 6" then 12" until the floor where you'll have 3" and 6" from the bottom.
Your header and doorway should be at least 3' wide, I'd go 4, have your holes 6" apart instead of 12.
You should use 1/2" wedge anchors to fasten the steel in, and go no more than 2/3 of the way through the wall.
You could be super safe and drill right through the wall and camb the wall together with matching steel on the outside. I would do this but I over build everything.
Once all the steel is in place you can rent a concrete saw and just cut your door right out of the wall.
When I installed a door like this I did it in a professional capacity and I hired a diamond saw guy that mounted a saw to the wall, but this was a man door in 2' concrete with rebar. You should be fine, just don't cut alone have a buddy
>>
>>1102057
Hes in west virginia . They just do that outside .
>>
Seems like a reasonable request, what you've got to do is..

>>1102051
>I just want to start building a underground home using mining techniques and maybe find the coal seam in the hillside behind this 80 year old smokehouse.

God fucking damn it.
>>
>>1102051
>using mining techniques
Learn mining techniques from real professionals, not strangers on internet. Or you'll die stupidly.
Once that's done, you should know how to do your door.

>>
>>1102051
Interesting. So why are you putting another door in? It doesn't look as if the cabin is dug into the hillside.
>>
hey this thread is full of know nothing retards

you can take the entire wall down if you desired its not supporting anything

all you have to do is look at the direction the rafters are going

the problem is unless its solid rock immediately behind the brick its just going to collapse as you dig

seeing as your digging into a knoll and not a mountain its probably all dirt
have you even dug test holes to see what the ground is like?
>>
>>1102346
Its some hard ass clay, Ive been trying to hammer the steel lintel in for a while, I was taking a break and considering just bashing the entire wall down so you had the right idea lol
>>
>>1102346
Theres also a 13 foot coal seam somewhere in that hill too according to the company that checked the land a while back
>>
>>1102350
unless your digging straight down that dirt wont support shit

go take a look at any of the many old coal mines

you need to learn a lot more about mining before you get yourself killed
just 1ft of dirt is enough to crush you to death
before you ruin the shed go dig a test tunnel somewhere else in the hill

That doesn't look like rock to me. That's compacted earth.

Ok buddy, time to get serious. Look into roof support - probably thick wooden supports, olde-Timey gold mine style. Make a decision about that crumbling brick wall, either shore it up with plywood and wood beams or else tear it down. Stacks of loose bricks are just a liability and may lull you into a false sense of security. Have a plan in place in case of cave ins such as a refuge hole and bring a buddy so you're not digging alone.

Also putting on my /biz/ hat here, you could make some money from this. A monetized YouTube channel could be the easiest first step, you'd get my subscription and I'm sure thousands more would too. Need tools or equipment? Crowdfund it. We're living in the age where people will pay good money for vicarious experiences.

You run into caliche . Which will just fuck up your tools. You need to get carbide teeth and tips to bust it up.

Out here in las vegas. If your digging a pool you can tripple your costs if we hit it. There is even insurance policies , pre construction.

After that you hit bed rock , limestone and other hard rock that can be very very expensive ti excavate .

you need black powder
drill holes fill with black powder insert fuse of your choice pack hole clay a hammer and a stick
the clay is going to allow the black powder to make enough pressure to fracture the rock

you can drill empty holes around the filled one so help it break up the rock

its going to be a slow and expensive

so I would just learn how to build a wall otherwise you ruined a shed

holy fuck you are done. 1) you need to form up either side of the entrance way and pour columns that are tied into the masony (Eucocrete), lintel to be installed and grouted in place. You need to have a couple sistered 2x6 with jack posts supporting back end of structure while you do the previously mentioned work.

As for seam, Im going to go ahead and remove the bottom half after I dig it out so i can find all of the seams I can around that middle section.

Back in the day I was working with 20 men crew, digging tunnels for large cable company, the tunels where ~40 meters deep under a rock mountain, somewhere in Europe. Our shift were 20 ppl, 5 up and 15 down. We were going as fast as 1 meter a day, so don't push your luck too far, you will be lucky if you get 10 inches a day. If you try to do it faster, your safety will be gone to shit, and you risk your life.

In general its stupid to do it alone, dont under estimate the danger.
I quit, because of reason (this one morning I overslept, coz I got drunk last night, and went there 10 minutes late, 3 ppl died )
>>
>>1107013
Don't get me wrong, safety first and all but...

>10x10s

Unless OP is excavating in highly fractured rock directly under loose boulders, I think this is probably overkill. OP should do triaxial shear testing and come up with a roof control plan that won't bankrupt him so fast.

OP, you are supposed to dig through from the outside to the wall first then remove the wall. That is for safety reasons among other things. You should still go out and dig down. It is easier using a jackhammer in that manner too.
>>
>>1114263
what thread you readin here, anon?
OP maybe the only manic miner who could get himself decapitated by a self-installed 'lintel' before he'd got an inch deep into rock. Lecturing him on 'safety' - aint really productive now, is it?

Safest course of action for OP be the one he has apparently chosen, namely, lose interest while still of sound body and full limb count. Which is a shame, but, other sides, he refuses to listen to even the most basic shit; he really would be a danger to himself going any deeper.
>>

Figured this'd be the place to ask...any tips for how to keep a hole from flooding? I was gonna dig a smallish hole for solidarity's sake, but it keeps raining here and I don't want to have a sump pump running 24/7. How do they keep those underwater tunnels dry? Could I get some spray-on swimming pool liner, or would I just gas myself out of the hole?
>>
>>1115609
You'd have to keep it above the water level. If you try to seal it, you'll probably just end up floating the structure out of the ground.

Kek. I'm not wrong either. And I almost rip a bro. Clearing a jammed up hammer mill that for some reason we still used from the 60s and onlyrics way in was torching a door. I'm sure they would. Most have been treated heavily so as not to rot despite water, so if you were just using them to keep off the ground it might be worthwhile. Have to be careful not to trip and hurt yourself tho.

I dunno what people are joking around, OP might have actually died.

This is not something to joke about. Someone needs to figure out wtf happened.

>>1122637

I just wouldn't bother desu, I mean the effort to make this happen you might as well get some sheet metal that isn't poison and make a cabinet BBQ.

This is the redneck BBQ and with that comes poison fumes and whatnot. Trying to solve that is just stupid and defeats the purpose.

It's like people who make oildrum BBQs like seriously just buy a decent BBQ or get some sheet metal and make it from scratch - metal isn't expensive and the effort involved at the end of the day is probably less.

It's like people making pallet shit like God damn just buy some wood - shit wood like they use for pallets is cheap.

I mean I built a desk out of milk crates when I always a poor poor student and only had what I found in the trash and what I stole from convenience stores. It was a ghetto desk, that could be built with zero tools. It was horrible but still better than the floor.

Pallet shit actually requires tools and effort. Making a BBQ out of a filing cabinet requires tools and effort. Just do that shit right and stop trying to get upvotes on reddit.

55 gallon drums are a lot cheaper than than a sheet metal press, which is what you'd need if you wanted to make any shape other than rectangular prism. You also don't need a welding machine, which is what you'd need unless you wanted to get really fucking creative with rivets and/or bolts.

Also, most drums are full of volatile solvents, which will burn off or evaporate if you stuff it full of wood and burn it out.

>>
>>1124801
right, woah, woah - hol up wid dis shit now, don need no damn cops, y'hear?

Theres many reasons why OP may be incommunicado, other than the obvious - maybe, hes had enough of cops recently, and decided on a short holiday, jist an example - in which case, wouldnt need more stress.

Easiest would be phoning him, or his house, at least (its a family house) - you niggas can dox him (or, he did himself, tbf) but cant look up a phone number? 5 fucking minutes, got the name of his cat FFS (well, one of them..) but, non-Murican, otherwise, prob would do, just to save this getting more stupid - someone (sensible) wanna volunteer to call? - post a burner, send the number if needed, also aint hard to find.

But back to the facts, was any of previous pictured, shed would be top, first pic, for reasons. And if so? - need a remarkably uncurious family not to have found him by few weeks later, basically 6 feet out the back door, or not have wandered over to investigate when the shed meks a crashing noise, and both it and OP disappear. He also weren't deep enough to disappear into hidden portal to Hades - shed collapse remains a (very) viable possibility here tho, as said, would have been found.

But w/e, debating whether to send those possibly in need of immediate unburial a Pizza for two weeks, always Best Plan - esp. seeing as if theres one thing he probably didnt need, its Another! Free! Pizza! Protip, forget Dominos, try Marcos - then, he can deliver it to himself.

As should probably resolve this before the bump limit, one way or another, either someone makes a quick call, ask hes OK, tell him, we just worried was all. Or leave it, OP's going MIA, it aint new. But no cops and stuff, thats just dumb. IMO.
>>

just spray a hose at it so it soaks up the water and it'll be much easier to remove. or better yet, since you want to use YE OLDE MININJ teknik, they used to blast the sides of the hills with pressurized water and the dirt would just run away with the water.

Maybe not, i thought we had a good time tho. Just figured he was on some new shit. Won at blackjack. Blew a lot of money. Carried him out of the casino. Had to call another buddy to drive us home. Planned a cookout the next day.

Dude was down to party 24/7. I honest to fuck figured anyone i knew besides him would do that. I still wonder if he didnt just get bad drugs or get murdered for some reason.

Doesnt really matter i guess.

Just hooe karma gets those responsible if so.

Doesnt really change the fact that i drive by his house every day on the way home from work. Get depressed. And put a bottle of cheap vodka to my head hoping i never wake up again...
>>
op here, the pizza guys are trapped now too
>>
>>1124875

>>

>>

>>
What's his address I'll order him pizza
>>
Bumping in hopes that OP has at least extracted an arm and his head by now.
>>
OP can we get a sitrep?
Have you received the pizzas and cops?
>>
Looking at this rationally, this kid embarked upon a narrow minded quest to dig a small cave, with total naivety, and took several days between each update on this board. The most likely explanation for him no longer posting is that he lost interest.

I want to believe this but I am legitimately worried.
>>
>>1126589
>>1126642

Yeah I think op is kill guys,
>>
>>1126642
Maybe we should check the local gazette? They would have reported about OP if he was found.
>>
Are we positive that he lives there? I could drive two hours tomorrow to check it out.
>>
>>1126734

I think we should explore some other options before wasting your time and invading anons privacy.

>>1126687

This is a good idea.

Did anyone ever call?
>>
You guys said he doxxed himself accidentally

Just look on facebook for him or his family.
If the motherfucker got hurt or died they would post some shit like "pray for me".

It shouldnt be that hard.
We all know he just got bored and quit working on it
>>
>>1126963

I've been looking on local news websites to no avail. Previous anons said he doxxed himself, so can someone post his info?

If he was found dead, all it would take is a google search, or going on his Facebook

So did some geology nerd confirm the new pictures are someone pretending to be op?

Fuck. Someone needs to contact op and give us a update.
>>
>>1132602

Oh god that's painful to look at. The stuff of nightmares.
>>
>>1133319
>So did some geology nerd confirm the new pictures are someone pretending to be op?

Are you retarded?
You think that OP couldnt actually post an update without his phone?

OP just isnt coming back
>>
>>1133319
>Someone needs to contact op
/diy/ - got maybe 48 hours before this dies.
DIES, I said.
>>
op was just on a manic stage of his bi polar and decided to ruin his parents shed
the manic episode wore off when he realized mining is hard and quit
>>
>>1133529
Most likely.
Still a shame nobody checked the local gazette.
>>
>>1133403

Guy is building a tunnel that most likely killed him. I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility op doesn't own a computer. He clearly lives in the boonies maybe no high-speed?

To be 100% honest with /diy/ I really need closure with this whole thing.
>>
>>1133586
I've been checking, but it's not easy without a name or address. Still waiting on that alleged dox
>>
>>1133632
No, >>1133529 is right. Everything he did was demolish a wall and scratch the surface of some compacted dirt. A child can do that. Hell, I dug a bigger "bunker" in my parent's yard during summer vacation when I was 14. They made me close it when I dug under the sewer pipes
>>
Well that was amusing while it lasted. Forever I shall wonder what happened to cave anon.
>>
So. Farewell then
Mole Anon
You were here
And now you gone.
