Hey /diy/ if a poorfag were to buy an angle grinder to fuck around once in a while what would you recommend?

Craigslist.

>>1098381

Ryobi cordless was $35 for me, but craigslist for anything cheaper. I
used it once, realized I had the wrong tool for the job, and haven't touched it in months.

It's usually a good idea to go corded with your power tools unless mobility/portability is a must.

>mfw battery powered miter saw
>>
>>1098381
Craigslist or harbor freight. I have a harbor freight angle grinder and it works fine. I think it was like 20 bucks when I bought it, but that was almost a decade ago.
>>
>>1098381
ok before anything else SAFETY GLASSES
SAFETY GLASSES
SAFETY GLASSES

things i'd recommend to a beginner:
>5" or smaller grinder
>paddle switch (slightly safer than lock-on)
>cutoff discs, grinding discs
>a diamond disc
>a flapdisc
>a knot brush

things i would not recommend to a beginner:
>9" grinders (they're heavy)
>snagging cups (huge inertia; gyroscopic weirdness)
>cone stones (unpredictable)
>crimp brushes (throws lots of wire shrapnel)
>removing the guard (for fuck's sake, look at where your fingers are!)

>>
>>1098381
just print out a coupon for one of those $9 harbor freight angle grinders

then buy your consumables from a lowes or home depot ( usually dewalt - at least they're made in eastern europe/usa/germany )

if it breaks return it for a new one.
>>
>>1098497
Not him but we had 2 guys almost kill themselves with the bigger ones in the past 2 months. One guy would have, but his buddy ripped his shirt and tied his arm. Wite brush dug all the way into his wrist. They saved the arm but last i heard he has minimal movement in his hand.
>>
>>1098497
I agree that he is absolutely wrong

You wear safety glasses AND a face shield anytime you use a grinder.
>>
>>1098502
Anecdotal evidence doesnt change anyones mind.
Only once he gets bit will he change his tune.

Im betting he refuses to wear hearing protection too
>>
>>1098464
also get some leather gloves and a thick leather welders jacket.

They don't have much power. Even cutting 1/8" mild steel can stall the motor under pressure. It may suit OP for occasional light duty but I'd spend the extra money and get the 6 amp with the paddle switch when it's on sale. You are spot on about avoiding HF consumables, especially the cutoff wheels.
>>1098497
I would tell you to kill yourself but it'll probably happen sooner than later. Angle grinders don't fucking play
>>
>>1098411

This

My angle grinder has seen hell and back and keeps kicking

Get an old B&D like picture related. Make sure it has the old Nut logo like in the picture (or an even older variation) and as much metal on the housing as possible. Their angle grinders were legendary until they started ruining their brand in the mid-80s.

I'm the vintage tool guy. If it was good and its old I'm probably a fan, brand be damned. B&D from the last 30 years is basically garbage. Even DeWalt is meh tier at best

if you have the enco discount/free ship it's pretty decent
>>
Op here, thanks guys. I thought about buying used but I prefer buying from a place like amazon have have the sweet guarantee. I saw some B&D, Bosch, Ryobi cheapos for under $50, are they any good?
>>
>>1099034
Nope.

B&D and Ryobi are bottom tier tools. End of line.

Bosch makes good stuff but the color scheme tells you if its their top tier stuff or bottom tier stuff. What color was it? Either way, its $50 so that right off tells me its probably their bottom tier stuff.
>>
>>1099040
Both blue and green. Also there's both Makita and DeWalt for a little over $60, I know that some /diy/ers have them in good regards. There's plenty more stuff but I have not heard of them before.

In these days it's probably all from asian provenience, right?
>>
>>1098518
Do not wear gloves, they just make it easier for you to get caught up in the grinder.
>>
>>1098625

This, just get the blue one with a metal fore end
>>
>>1099053
What about scale or articulated plate mails?
>>
>>1099053
Why would your hand ever be that close to the wheel? I've seen shirts and pants get caught in a grinder but never gloves.
>>
>>1099060
As long as it's not going to deglove your fingers if it gets grabbed.

more of a bench grinder/spindle polisher thing.

there's no perfect solution. you need protection from the heat that builds up in the work.

(a safety stop switch that you can reach with panicked one-armed flailing is a good thing)
>>
>>1099086
Have you heard of pliers, maybe vise grips, possibly a cup of water and some damned patience?
>>
>>1099233

>>

>cup of water

>>

>ok before anything else SAFETY GLASSES
Don't forget the ear protection. I also recommend a face shield. Please note that a face shield IS NOT a substitute for eye protection. Both should be worn.

I have a 4-1/2" Bosch paddle switch grinder that I absolutely love. I've used the DeWalt 4" mini (weak), the DeWalt 4-1/2" (louder, more vibration than mine), a 6" Makita (which is awesome, but too heavy for me to handle well).

The more recent Bosch grinders are better than the older ones, since the side handle is soft with a shock absorber which is far better than the hard plastic handles that most grinders have.

I also recommend getting the high-speed sander backup pad.
>>
>>1099233
when you're polishing you have to push really hard to get the metal hot enough to melt the wax that carries the abrasive. if you don't, you'll waste hours smearing wax without cutting metal.
holding the work with pliers is unthinkable!
>>
Op here again, I reduced my options to these ones, any input is highly appreciated.

lads?
>>
>>1099846
Personally, I'd lean towards the Makita. From my experience, they seem to be solid, with relatively low noise and vibration, and they have a reputation for longevity. I have rather higher-end angle grinders for my metalworking uses, and there's more to them than increased power. I suspect that the Makita would be nicer to use than the others.
>>
>>1099428
out of that list i've only used the GA5030, but i've killed dozens of grinders on the job and i'll let you in on a secret: they're all the same exact shit inside.

buy whichever is cheapest and spend the big money on higher quality abrasives. i've always favoured klingspor or flexovit for grit wheels and osborn for wire brushes.

I'd just get a used Makita.

The quality of the plastic housing used between a Makita or Dewalt and something like a Ryobi or Harbor Freight is dramatic.

Try yard sales if you're that poor man.
>>
>>1098409
Ryobi an infamous shit.

Angle grinders are best corded.

>>1098464
Truth. Ignore the trolls.

I refuse to own crimp brushes. Don't need cups on a handheld grinder or cones at all.

Beware of knotted brushes. Tuck your clothes in.

9" grinders are mostly a waste unless you weld and fit professionally and even then smaller units get a lot of use.. I have a couple 9" but 6" is the sweet spot because 6" cutting discs. I accumulate 4.5" at auctions but will only buy 6" new.

I ran a welding school toolroom using a variety of brands. For a 9" I prefer DeWalt, for 6" Metabo. I'd also buy Makita without hesitation in any size.

Old grinders worth cleaning up and replacing cords & brushes include B&D Wildcat and Makita.

>Being a pussy the post.

Being a dumbfuck wigger the post.

I laugh when morons like you who think you won't get injured hurt themselves. May your nutsack get wrapped around a flat knotted wire wheel.
