Are there ANY smoke detectors that aren't absolute throwaway-tier shit?

Just get one that is UL and NFPA certified. They will be adequate for your purposes. Seeing as how I don't think a big box store would even carry unlisted shit (unlike buying through Amazon), you shouldn't have any trouble finding what you need.
Get AC powered units and link them together for better reliability and alarm coverage.
Why anybody throw away a smoke detector?

The 120v hardwired models are higher quality I'd imagine. Then you don't have to track down where the annoying ass low batter beep is coming from as much.

Even those that are wired directly to the mains have a backup battery that will beep when it is low.

The good ones have rechargeables that last a dozen years or more. So, its not nearly as big of a deal.

Sa350B
Dual sensor 10yr lithium smoke detector.
It is the best right now. No battery to replace. And uses 2 different sensors to detect.

This is the best for non kitchen and non bathroom.
For bathrooms and kitchens use an ionic sensor smoke alarm like the P1000.
If your house has gas you should also get a combination co2 and explosive gas detector
