I'm designing some rolling workbenches for my limited shop space. I'd like to be able to join them lengthwise or widthwise to make a chop saw station or a big assembly table. They will have locking casters but I would like to be able to fix them together semi-permanently.
I was thinking I could buy hardware to lock them together but I'm not sure what is available. I've been looking at hardware I've used for dining room table leafs and fixing them on the bottom. I could even position them to join different length tables together. I know that hardware needs to be rather tight so I was worried it might be difficult to use. Is there something more forgiving? What do you suggest?
Use a couple of mortise and wedged tenons with some 2x4s, easiest by far

I plan on making them out of 3/4" plywood. I'm not sure how I would incorporate that sort of joinery into the design. How would I set it up to join two workbenches temporarily using that? It will need to be flush on both sides.

Use 2 of each on the front/back.
