I'm looking for the smallest (and hopefully most efficient) way to convert 230VAC to 12VDC (~ 1-2 watts only). Output doesn't have to be very smooth since it's only used to power a few LEDs.
I know there are cheap wallwarts, but they are still too big for my needs.

I have the same problem, I want to install leds around a mirror but I can't fit a PSU behind it, I was thinking about soldering leds in series until they add up to mains voltae and using an AC current limiter.
capacitive dropper if its only a few leds, but for proper 12v, Small transformer, bridge rectifier.

well, in my case that would (roughly) mean 230V/3,2V ~ 72 LEDs in series. If one of them dies, all won't work anymore and it would be a pain to check each of them.

If used on USA 240vac the 'ground' or - side is connected almost directly to the 120vac L2 main.
If used on USA 120vac and not polarized properly, the - is connected to the 120v line.
In either case this can be a dangerous practice if you aren't aware of this design flaw.
