Are you supposed to clean gas fireplaces?

If so, Is this something I can do at home or do I have to hire a chimney sweep (if those still exist)
>>
If it's a vented chimney, yes. Especially if it's a retrofit. Once a season is fine.

Hire a chimney sweep since they also inspect for damage. $150-$200 isn't too much to pay for peace of mind.
>>
Chimney sweeps are still a thing. Inspect once a year, preferably just before the season you need the Chimney.
>>
Holy shit the retardation in this thread is fucking tremendous.
Use your goddamn heads for thirty seconds.
Do you have a chimneysweep come clean your water heater vent?
>>

>live in Texas
>have fireplace
>use it maybe 3 days every two years at the most
>still have a chimney sweep come in and inspect it every year
because I just hate money
>>
Lol no
>>

Water heaters are set up to combust in a way that produces no soot, a vent is also usually metal thus more durable.

Fires produce soot and unlined chimneys can get blocked/ collapse inside. Op cleary has not had his checked so a sweep would not be a bad idea.

Dont be such an arrogant fuck about stuff that you clearly dont know enough about. Plenty of people have been killed by CO from gas fires and plenty of chinenys caught on fire.

If its never been looked at to your knowledge op then defo either get it swept or do it yourself. If you do it yourself then get a cheap co alarm just to be safe.

OP here,

Ok, I'll just call a chimney guy. I've had this house for 4 years but only used this chimney 5 or 6 times so It probably needs to be cleaned
>>
>>1090990
But it's a gas fireplace, gas doesn't produce any soot so why would your chimney be dirty

OP unless theres a bird up there you're fine
>>
>>1090983
Dude it's a GAS fireplace, same as a GAS water heater. gas fires don't produce soot.

Neither produce soot, because burning gas only produces water and co2. gas fires don't produce soot

>>1091056

You people are so unlearned and retarded its insane.

>Oh its a gas so there will be no soot.

Yeah, no. Any combustible will produce soot in the right conditions, that is if there is not enough oxygen for some, any, reason. Just play with a lighter and run a piece of metal or glass over it to see for yourselves.
>>
>>1091059
Why are you fighting against a safety check for something that hasn't been looked at for years?

A chimney sweep doesn't just clean chimneys, and chimneys can have more problems than being dirty, in addition to the problems the gas insert can have.

Don't listen to these retards OP, no need to pay some asshole to vacuum your clean chimney. If you are really concerned about it just put a CO detector near the fireplace.
>>
>>1091096
What good would a Colorado detector do near a fireplace?
>>
>>1091101
Something about recreational marijuana idk
>>
>>1090910
while the chimney itself may not need cleaned by a chimney sweep the fire itself should probably be serviced by a plumber / gas person? so as to check the operation and safety.
usually they will check the gas pressure, use a smoke match to check the fumes are drawn out properly, make sure its clean and not all dusty which can combust and burn down your house, possibly clean the flame sensor too so it lights easily instead of you holding the button down like a chump.

>water heater vent
there was a bird nest in a water heater i fired up recently. everyone almost died from the CO
