If it's sealed well enough pine (or even salvage pallet wood) could work. But you would be having to paint/maintain them every year.
The plastic ones last forever. I've got some on my house that are over 10 years old. Still look new.

Yeah, after really looking at it I need about $50 in lumber per window plus the finish. This doesnt feel like a big savings over vinyl.

Ideally, you'll want to use cedar. Just buy 1x6 cedar pickets, they're pretty cheap. 2x6 if you can get a good deal.

If you don't mind the natural colour you can just leave the cedar as is too. Advantage of using better wood.

BTW wood expands, so careful how you put it together.

That's to build it out of solid wood, right? Look at v groove plywood. Cut to size and trim it out with a bit of solid wood.

Loose fence pickets , anda good outdoor paint.

We've made some at work used 6" cedar "decking" boards. basically same as op pic. except cedar and stained. We also made sure that each half were correct to the window and ripped all the boards for even spacing. Even threw radi for curved window.

Sanded with 80 grit(its gonna be outside doesnt need to be glass smooth) and applied an exterior stain. the horizontals were screwed from the back and attached to the house with screws on vertical boards right above the horizontals, angled down so they are semi hidden as well.
