Hello /diy/, Can anyone tell me what would be the best way to build this simple box? My last racing sim was made of pvc and it was sqeak city despite using tons of glue.

The top will hold a 42 inch screen and a keyboard/wheel so it has to shpport some weight. I was going to make that bit out of wood braced up like a countertop and the rest of the box maybe MDF, but idk.

Is there a cheap material that comes in somewhat large sheets thats kinda smooth?

Cut it out of mdf panels. Then hammer it together.

is MDF strong enough or do I have to brace the top shelf with something like plywood.
>>
mill it from a solid piece of tungsten

MDF is plenty strong for this. Plywood is stronger for the weight (MDF is really, really, heavy), but to get it smooth, you either need to buy furniture grade plywood, or spend a quality weekend with filler and sandpaper.

Modify your design so the shelf rests on the outer walls, instead of floats. If you can't for some reason, a 2" strip of MDF from the bottom to the shelf on the back and sides will suffice. But really, just make the shelf rest on the walls of the box.

Keep in mind, MDF is very sensitive to getting wet, and never recovers. If this is going to be in a basement, or someplace people will be likely to spill drinks, paint and laminate. I've heard that exterior latex house paint is the best bang for the buck protection wise. Other anons will almost certainly know more than I about paint though.

(there MDF for wet applications like bathrooms, etc)

There is?? I've never seen this beast, and now must read up on it.

I've done a little of building with MDF, but not a ton. Most of my experience with it is removing water damaged MDF and replacing it with plywood. I can't count the number of kitchen shelves ruined by wet dishes that I've replaced.

Used it all over my bunker, ok up to 99% air humidity (in case it ever gets abandoned again). The panels for wet areas is usually green (another fun one is the red one, its fireproof).

But if you want to build a gaming station I'd recommend using wood supports and oriented strand boards, in my case I used it for the "command center" consoles (with combination of cheap ikea table tops).

You never know where bunkerbro appears. He has an underground network of tunnels into every thread.

For most of my functional tables I use osb sanded to 220 and coated with a few layers of clear coat. Smooth, cheap (8USD 4x8x3/4), and sturdy.

Milling a shit. Forging his racing setup out of a single piece of steel is the only way to insure quality.

If OP plans to play any Japanese racing sims, make sure to fold the steel at least 512 times beforehand.

Good topic anon.

Lately I've been thinking how to adopt a VR/simracing cockpit area into my upcoming homebuild.

And with nearly everything large i own, it should be on casters. Start with a quality set of 5" ball bearing casters w/ brake and 'balloon wheels'. You should be able to get these for ~$20/usd for 4 on ebay. Being able to roll it out of the way with ease over cords and such will be worth it.

As for the cockpit, visit your local scrapyard armed with a generator + plasma cutter (or sawzaw) and chop off the firewall back to the seat of an e36/miata/whatever. It's easier with something that uses a drive by wire pedal set and has a steering wheel sensor already. Weld some 1x1 square tubing to brace it up, grind down the prickly bits, and attach the aforementioned casters.

The wiring is a bit involved, but it's pretty do'able to get the cluster and OEM buttons to work.

I suggest this because it takes up the same amount of space - but you get something that is ergonomically identical to a real car that builds valuable muscle memory. Plus with VR will add a bit extra immersiveness.

And if people question your level of autism for having 1/3 of a car in your living room - tell them the good word of 'hydraulic delta platform rigs' and it wont seem so crazy in comparison.

I just took a tv table, cut it down to size, ordered a board with rollers, took a couple L mounts on the back end to right the balance of my heavy ass wheel.

Add that to a monitor arm and I got a pretty nice sim setup with a really comfy chair that can have the wheel just roll out of the way

I guess that isn't a great pic, also your options get limited for monitor arms once you go with a 30inch monitor. Basically if my 'desk' holding the arm wasn't the right height the Amazon Basics arm wouldn't have worked it was $150, compared to the Ergotron one for $300

Are you planning on having sermons for a small cult following in your bunker?
