I want to make a device which allows lobsters and other oceanic crustaceans able to survive on dry land for longer. Would it be possible to devise something that holds a small amount of salt water near their gills while replenishing the oxygen though aeration or do they also excrete non-gaseous waste through their gills which would rapidly turn the water toxic?
>>
>>1086559

but... why? i do not want crustacean overlords.
>>
>>1086559
Neat idea. As far as I know, as long as you supply fresh (Salt) water to the gills they should live, ignoring possible complications from the rest of their body being out of the water.

As a kid, I used to catch baby crabs about the size of a silver dollar and keep them alive in glasses of salt water.
>>
>>1086601
Two words: house lobster
>>
>>1086559
>do they also excrete non-gaseous waste through their gills

I'd assume they exhale CO2 which can cause CO2 poisoning if not scrubbed. That's what a SCUBA Rebreather is there for.

They have gills at the base of their legs
>>
>>1086609
Surely, the aeration will remove the CO2 as readily as it adds oxygen. I'm more concerned with waste that isn't gaseous.

>>1086630
That's a shame, I was hoping for a collar/Abe Sapien type device. Engineering it to not interfere with their legs will be a much bigger challenge.

Okay, Mr Bigshot, you get working on your lobster amphibication equipment and I'll work on mine and we'll see who has lobsters chirping merrily as they skitter 'round our respective homes first.
>>

Autism is real
>>
>>1086559
Simple. Get a large hamster ball, fill the holes, add water and lobster, profit.
>>
>>1086683
This seems to be the right answer. Use silicon to seal the holes and post a picture.
>>
>>1086636
>Surely, the aeration will remove the CO2 as readily as it adds oxygen.
It shouldn't be a problem at all, the capacitance coefficient of water for CO2 is much higher than it is for air.

I'm pretty sure there is nothing going on with gills other than gas exchange (O2 and CO2).
>>
lobsters die quickly in room temperature water that is otherwise perfect.
>>
>>1086559
what the fuck is wrong with you? why would you even ask this?
>>
> make a reverse scuba suit for lobsters

you do realize you need a team of engineers and biologists and a shitload of money? did you really think a bunch of retards on a Chinese cartoon board would meet this criteria?
>>
Test this with crawdads. You can buy a shit ton and they are easier to keep. Lobsters need saltwater and to be pretty cold. Make a custom tailered suit from clear trashbags and fill it with some water. Put little leg sleeves and maybe come cute puctures on it.
>>
If their gills are at their tiny feet, make tiny shoes.
>>
>>1086722
I would have gone for one of those rolling treadmill type things, but shoes/shinguards sound good too.

>>
>>1087023
something like this
>>
>>1087040
an air pump is necessary as without fresh air dissolving in the water the lobster will suffocate. temperature can just be controlled by keeping your house cold or adding the occasional bit of ice to the water
>>
>>1086606
Why would you want a house lobster?
>>
>>1087044
why wouldnt you?
>>
>>1087025
Maybe a part of it should be semi-permeable, then there would be exchange of gasses but water couldn't get out.
>>
>>1087040
>>1087042
I wonder if a crab would work better. They need less oxygen than lobsters.
>>
>>1087049
You let me know when you find a material that can do that while remaining rigid and viable for a crustacean to roll around in like it is a fucking guinea pig out for a stroll.
>>
>>1087021
All I could think of
>>
>>1087025
just add an airpump, im sure some /diy/nosaur knows how to fix one to a rechargeable battery for however many hours needed. op doesnt really say how long he wants mr pinchy to roll around the house
>>
>>1087040
only problem would be water returning out the air pump, but im sure with a good seal and a one way valve it would be possible
>>
>>1087059
really just anything smaller would be better as it uses less oxygen but a lobster should be fine if the water gets oxygenated and changed often. lobsters would be fine as long as their gills are kept wet and there is a gas exchange with the air. if the lobster kept moving the break in the surface tension of the water would be enough to facilitate this change. how important is it that the lobster has control over his location. would a tank with wheels suffice or must it have autonomous control??
>>
>>1087152
>this thread
chuckled
>Mr. Pinchy
no more sides
>>
>>1087026
since coconut crabs can breath air out of water it would be an ideal compromise for a lobster, if you want a crustacean pet
>>
>>1086559
another possibility would be to attach a cart like tank to the lobster with a large supply of aerated salt water that it can drag along with it, like a little sea pionier.
>>
>>1087161
adding plants to the tank would also defuse the C02 buildup and you could have yourself a self sustaining eco system
>>
>>1087166
>>1087173
>>
>>1086636
>>1087173
creating a watertight seal from the lobster life preserver (LLP) depends on if you want it to be removable or not. i would say just attach it to the shell and build a new one when the lobster malts.
instead of a sealed hole you could just make little water tight lobster leggings for it to wear with the LLP, like a reverse Glove Box Isolator. anyway hope this helps

or you could make it like an space suit rather than a wetsuit. following the principle of Glove Boxes even further to make it, the lobster would be able to walk around in its reverse scuba suit and cart. dont forget to make it as light as possible to prevent strain on the lobster
>>
>>1087183

>>1087194

You may be thinking about this all wrong.

Why not make a scuba suit and turn your house into an aquarium.
>>
Why not a hampsterball that is cut open on top attached to a gyroscope to prevent it from tipping over? Just get a house with out stairs.

Also if you have the money, place an unalted hampsterball in a salt water aquarium and attach it to some type of device similar to an old mouse here the direction the ball is rolling will determine which way the tracks move. Oh yeah you need some type of tracks like a tank or use the gyroscope from the previous idea and use a unicycle.

As far as keeping the tank cool, having the aquarium allows you to hook up an ice machine that you can use for drinks or let it dispense into your lobster tank to give it that "at home" feel.

What you need to do is create a sealed jacket for the lobster out of oil based clay. It will form a watertight seal wherever you mold it against the lobster so you can make a pocket the whole way around its gill area and still give it the use of its legs. Then it's just a matter of adding a battery powered aerator.

How about taking it a step back and make a small plastic aquarium with wheels and sensors that detect where the lobster wants to move. Then it will drive the aquarium through the house. I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Water, is in fact, one ton per cubic meter, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, pretty fucking heavy.

I hope you've done the math.

It looks like they copied what a worm does and programmed the Lego bullshit to move around.

Exactly like a 12 year old with a new robotics kit could do.

That's not science.

I think the way to go is to get some of that thick industrial sealable plastic and use that to make any kind of shaped like suit. You could use something like a heated glue gun to seal the edges.
I think you should work with something like a tube and a central pump to fill the suit and create life support.
Also, the plastic suit should have some sort of frictionpads on the leg segments.

Also, i looked up that hamster guy. Shit's so wierd it's respectable..

Cloning isn't genetic engineering. But it's getting better.
when I was at uni the problem was to put the new genetic sequence in the correct place. And suddenly we have CRISPR Cas and shit just got easy!
