how bad is it that moss grows on my shingles?
if really bad, what's the most cost effective way to permanently remedy it?
must be too much shade. you're gonna have to top or fell some trees. if neighboring houses/buildings are the cause of the excessive shade you're gonna have to burn them down, there's no other way

huge shade tree is the why.
but does moss cause much damage?
>>1076450
moss traps moisture but if it is properly lined with waterproofing and with proper ventilated spacing then it should be fine
otherwise it will rust nails and rot timber etc
moss is the bane of shingles. use moss-out equivalent to treat your shingles. zinc flashing also prevents moss growth

oh i see, thanks!
is there such a thing as "anti-moss"?

opposite to OP's query, what kind of roofing tile/roof should i install if i like the mossy aesthetic?
meaning i want moss to grow and i don't want it to adversely effect the integrity of the roof.
>>1076481
good question
>>1076481
you are building a "green roof" basically
usually need to allow for drainage and some specialist membrane/lining but if it is /diy/ you can probably get away with just a piece of membrane glued to an existing roof, throw some dirt on it and let it grow naturally (and fall off from time to time when they get bigger)

I would think something like a tin roof with ridged shingles/tiles ontop. make sure to use screws and not nails, because you'll need to compress a rubber/plastic washer below the tile so it won't leak around the hole.
Also, remember that dirt/plants/water retention are surprisingly heavy, so plan for that with extra rafters.

>turning your roof into a garden
but peoples roofs aren't designed for that anon
>>1076547
not to be walked on, of course, but if you just want to put a layer of moss on it for a e s t h e t i c s then it is doable, sort of
Mix heavy bleach water solution start at bottom and spray in a pump sprayer. It will be the least evasive to that roof. Leaves and probably a northward facing sloe is your issue. As long as its a 4-6 /12 pitch you'll be fine as long as roofs dry. Dont step on the moss. I spent 35 yrs walking every roof made...

i used to live in minnesota, had this shit on a part of the roof that was shaded by a separate overhanging roof.
Dad was trying to sell the house, and the buyers hired an inspector.
This motherfucker right here goes and tells the buyers that they'd need to completely strip reshingle the entire roof and that his brother was a roofing business owner that could give them a good deal.
God I hate useless/worthless inspectors.
Dad gave me a ladder, a rag, and some cleaner (regular surface cleaner, i think i had mean green or greased lightning). 15 minutes total of scrubbing it off and it wasn't there anymore.
Buyers came and bought house full price.

>how bad is it that moss grows on my shingles?
Not at all unless it's an older home with no waterproofing.

This
Can also use water and salt, vinegar and dish soap...
All natural herbicides. Just be careful of your eaves pipe the water runoff into the ground, anything green there will also die. You could hook up a bucket of something to the end of the eaves temporarily while you murder the moss
If you're in a bind, I've found chain cleaner murders the shit out of moss. I ran over a can of the stuff by mistake (amazingly, the tire survived) and not one bit of moss has grown where the spill was for the last 3 years while the rest of the drive is riddled with the furry bastards.

Best way to deal with is a strip of copper running the length of the roof at the peak.
>>1076549
Roofs are designed to be walked on
Are you retarded? How the fuck would they install shingles if they couldn't be walked on?
>>1076853
>i am only pretending.jpg
0/10 cmon give me something to chew on, that is purely retarded
>>1076477
but if you use zinc make sure you dont have copper used on your roof because
zink and cooper kill each other
Rent a cheap pressure washer hit all the moss with a dowb angle (not up you will rip your shingles off get a dehumidifier for your crawl spacr for the attic (wont nake a difference on outside moisture) but they are cheap cost 3$ a month to run and keep underneat space very good smelling and from ruining your roof from underneath. But just rent a cheap pressure washer climb up ob your roof and clean it off from the top of the peak. Dont use too high of a pressure tip!

Well when it's brand new, it's really flexible, as it ages the shingles dry and harden, walking on it can crack them and shorten the life span of the roof.

So I should remove the 600ft of 18awg uninsulated wire I have on my roof aka The 12kV Squirel launcher/cookerâ„¢ (patent pending)?
>>1076447
Stop giving a shit.
>>1076853
moss is slippery bro
>>1078174
> not having calluses so thick on your feet that it's like gripping things with 10 grit sand paper
>>1076447
it depends really. how longs the moss been there? If it's been there for years you might as well leave it as you're probably going to fuck up your roof removing it. there's a reason that day laborer mongoloids get hired for roofing jobs though as roofing is easy as fuck it's just shitty work.
